You can. I've done this before multiple times. It's same thing, as you do on your right. For example, ak12. You hold down the a button and use left grip to take the mag out. Same thing if you're left handed. With the gun in your left hand, hold down x and use your right hand to grip the magazine out of the gun.

If you want to keep firing right handed but have the mag release button on the left hand I don't think there's a setting in Onward for that.
On the Quest you can go to Settings/ Devices/ Controller / Button Remapping and assign one of the left controller buttons to "A" for dropping the mag.
I played around with this but didn't like having to take my thumb off the left stick and not being able to move while dropping a mag
