Hey so I have a discord bot that has a SQLite DB, some commands and listeners and I need a way to host it but I am not sure what to choose. I have a Raspberry Pi Zero W running a different bot right now but it gets timeout issues a LOT but that's a pi problem. I want to know what would be the best way to host a discord bot like the one I described? I would prefer a one time purchase since I don't have a credit/debit card atm.

There are a few free discord bot hosting providers, but I personally wouldn't use them.
You can find them out on YouTube easily.
Yeah that's why I want to find a better option.
They're unreliable and have bad stats.
there aren't hosts with one time purchases
because hosting your bot has a monthly cost for them
I don't think anyone would offer you a one-time payment option. Unless it's for a fixed time like 1-12 months.
Yeah I thought that too that’s why I was also thinking of buying some irl hardware but I’m not sure what and where I should then place it
Raspberry Pi's are very good. RPi 4 or 5 will do you for a long time and many bots.
but they are only as good as your internet connection is. which is the main bottleneck for hosting bots
I mean ethernet should solve that right?
having a wired connection is always preferred for applications that need a stable internet connection, but if your internet is not stable then your ethernet connection won't be so it doesn't always solve that
I mean it's stable for my PC.
internet stability depends on your network equipment and your ISP
if your requirements are low you can use a free host tbh, there shouldn't be issues
you can setup rclone to make backups of your db to something like gdrive
You know a good one?
I've only used oracle cloud
it's good but it requires a credit card
oracle free tier is good they require a card on file, but i find to be excellent 🐌
Alright I’ll check it out
Why the snails
Was it sarcastic?
no it’s an inside joke. amgelo said the same thing before i did
yes
Alright
i think railway or render are some good cheap options
you could always go with hetzner tho
Or you can always use oracle cloud's free tier. Keep in mind getting them to approve you is extremely difficult and a painful process
since when do they need to approve you
I don't exactly mean "approve you" as a person, I mean it more in the sense that they deny people's (valid) payment methods for no reason all the time, and getting them to approve yours is pretty painful because you have to have a specific type of debit/credit card
that isn’t really an issue for most
i’ve been using oracle for years and never had an issue
I mean I tried 4 different cards including debit & credit, neither got accepted and when I reached out to support that's the explanation they gave me
I would recommend a simple raspberry pi dosent take much power and can use it for other stuff when the bot is not needed anymore
they already use a pi zero w
get a pi3 or 4 then
if they don’t want to buy anything that’s not an option
I can but I would prefer as cheap as possible since I am doing this with a server and none really have funding to help buy it
a pi3, pi4 or even a pi5 would cost at least $30-80
yeah
that doesn’t include power supply or sd card
yeah
i calculated a pi 3 A or B i think it was with all I would need, about 50 bucks
i would suggest a pi4 tbh if you can
i have a pi5 but i understand budget
which one tho
depends on how much ram you want
I mean how much would a discord.js bot like mine need?
depends on how big the bot is gonna be, but 4gb is plenty
and which one would that be?
the pi4, 4gb one ..?
you’ll want to look that up
It's there A, B+, B etc?
only B
really?
i was thinking of B
3
oml im stupid
LOWEST PRICE WHAT THE FRICK
it’s fine
yeah they’re not cheap
so why go with a 4 instead of a 3 again?
that’s personal preference
What's the diff?
biggest*
well it’s different generations
more power for everything really
i think ima go with a 3
cause 50 total was high in the budget already-
that’s fair
whatever works best for you
Can't find any with more than 1GB RAM, that correct?
and B+ or B?
or A+?
so many options jeez
Actually figured that out
And that
