#Intel CPUs (13th & 14th) Catastrophic Failre

So I'm looking for a new laptop and I ask my friend if I should go with an AMD or Intel. He staunchy dissuaded me from Intel, saying that the new chips were experiencing some pretty huge failures, whereby "they will randomly die and possibly kill other parts along with themselves." He said "the 12th gens suffer from the same problem but they don't spontaneously combust." Most of the cool laptops I'm finding have 13th or 14th gen CPUs in them. Is this flaw real? Has it been fixed or does it still persist?

I remember there was some talk about intels CPU’s having an issue with slowly degrading overtime because of power management issue in the processor. That was back in August I think? Would have to do more research to be able to tell if it persists however.

#

Looking into it a bit more, what I seem to find is it affected processors with a base power of 65W or higher. Supposedly there were some patches sent out to fix the issue.

I think your friend is blowing it up really.

I have a laptop with an overclocked 14900HX, just make sure to fully update the system and BIOS, and if you're still a bit scared, you can undervolt the CPU.

Not to mention without the latest BIOS update the CPUs do Harakiri themselves, but they don't bring other components with them, I don't know where your friend got that from.

The issues with intel were primarally with desktop CPUs, not laptop ones. While the faliure rate were way higher then they should have been, statistically you are likely to be unaffected

Still, update the BIOS

But the issue has been atleast fixed now

If you are going to get an intel laptop you wanna be aiming for one with the core 200v series CPUs

#

Kinda the best laptop CPU arround

Thanks for the info, fellas!

Given that Intel just recently released the proper software fix for their hardware flaw, I would restrain from getting a laptop with an Intel chip.
"Spontaneous combustion" and "taking other parts with it" are really exaggerated and the most that could happen is instability under load and after some time instability in general.

#

Ya know what, given Intel just released their low-power generation I can kinda recommend that.
Otherwise, if you value any battery life at all, go AMD with one of the laptops with something like an 780 integrated GPU

I can recomend lunar lake

#

im not sure how Arrow lake behaves in laptops yet it might not have the same balls to the wall efficiency lunar lake has its arcitecturally slightly different

#

though if they carry over the same behaviour lunar lake has of being absurdly efficient at low powers then they might actually be the goto laptop chip of choice for gaming laptops

yeah
