#gpu fans seem inconsistent

My xfx 5700 xt wont give me a fan speed in the software overlay when I am playing arma 3, where it will give me low gpu utilization but temperatures up to 100C. But in other titles, like destiny 2, it will give me a fan speed in the overlay and the gpu temprature is kept down to something more manageable. From what I understand Arma 3 is more CPU intensive so the gpu being such high temperatures doesn't make any sense.

Just updated it a week ago

It was doing it before the update to the drivers as well

#

And that one was a full fresh

Yes

#

I only finally noticed the comparison the past few days

Someone suggested that maybe ARMA 3 is trying to run off the integrated graphics instead of the gpu

But that doesn’t explain the heat

ARMA always runs low FPS

#

For me

#

And most everyone else in the unit

#

It’s an older less optimized game that I’m told is more cpu Vs gpu intensive

Well, if you think your fans are inconsistent, check the GPU and VRAM speed while gaming, if they stay up to spec then your GPU and its cooling are fine and it's ARMA.

If your GPU thermal throttles and fans don't properly ramp up it's your GPU.

Keep in mind AMD reports junction temp instead of edge-temp, so it always looks hotter than it is compared to NVidia.

Also, if you never cleaned your GPU cooler(don't do it with a vacuum or compressed air), check if the cooler is clean enough and if the thermal paste is fine.

It’s giving me both junction temp and general gpu temp

Well I got one at least, I’ll check it against a few others tomorrow

Check if your GPU behaves the same.

And keep in mind, your GPU is like 5 years old, if you never repasted the GPU now might be the time as the thermal paste might've dried up.

Don’t know how to do that with the gpu and honestly not too enthused about tearing it open to do that

#

There was at least a 20C difference and the overlay was giving me a fan rpm in Destiny 2

#

It was giving me N/A for fan rpm when I was playing ARMA 3

Possibly, it’s a weird game

Does AMD Radeon Software see ArmA 3?

daring crown
#

I believe it does, but I’d have to check tomorrow as I have to sleep right now

100°C ingame with low utilization indicates a hardware fault. Arma does not hijack the GPU driver to control fan speed. The GPU itself (given that the OS does not send any information on how to control the fans) has its own controller which applies its own fan profile.
You should install MSI afterburner and try setting the fan speed manually in it, while playing arma to be sure

That’s the thing, it work fine with other games it’s just ARMA where it’ll do that
