The nominative and accusative are identical for feminine, neuter and plural. Only masculine changes. It is not optional.
There are several situations where accusative is required:
- For most verbs with 1 object, the object will be accusative: Ich sehe den Mann.
- For verbs with 2 objects, the direct object will be accusative: Ich gebe dem Mann ein Buch.
- Accusative prepositions always go with accusative: Dieses Geschenk ist für dich.
- Two-way prepositions (you can learn about that later) use either accusative or dative depending on the situation.
You don't have to learn all of those things right away. Just keep in mind what they are and learn them one at a time.
