In my book, I have come across the sentence:
Wusstest du, dass da netto kaum etwas übrig bleibt?
What is the da doing there? Would the sentence make sense without it?

I'd need more context to answer more confidently, but I think it would. It seems like someone was referring to something, and to refer to it in this sentence, they used "da".

I assume this textpart was part of a dialog. With this da it's pointing out, that there won't be much money left after taxes because of something.
In general the sentence would make sense without the "da" too, but would be more unspecific.

without being too specific about the amount of pay for the kindergarden teacher he is saying that there won't be much left after taxes
