I normally do german front, english back
Maybe others do it different but, I believe this is the best way to do it
Eh actually, I don't even have sentence translations in my deck anymore ;-; But yeah that's what I did at first and it worked great for me

about a month ago, honestly it has definitely helped but definitely weird in some places and makes me wonder if i should just reverse it and do german->english
from my googling it seems that people say english->TL might be better for production while TL->english is better for passive understanding
but i rly dk which way is more efficient for learning

hm, well it's sorted by freq so I guess you could continue it if it suits you. And well, you're allowed to order the cards as you wish
If it won't be too troubling, you can reverse the cards and try deutsch > english for a bit
and if you like it better that way, you can stick to it. If not, that's also okay

The important part is that you're learning the words well so as long as that's taken care of, either way is okay

as in if youre making your own custom deck, do you just usually put in words that you didnt understand when reading or something?

Yes, tho I don't do it intensely at the moment. I rely on my b1 deck for vocab mainly but I sometimes encounter words that are definitely worth adding to the deck so yeah. In your personal deck, you add foreign words which you encountered from reading / listening etc
I also follow learngermanoriginal's grammar course and when the lesson is about some type of conjunction or important word I need to jit down, I add them to my deck too
Also, this is worth mentioning but once you're done with your deck, don't jump to another one since it already has 4k words. You need to start relying on your own personal deck eventually
