I've recently got 2 offers to stay at the Pfaffenhof dormitory. One is from a tenant who wants to sublease his room. The other is from VSSW. Apparently, according to my conversations with the subleasing tenant, the rooms there have generally the same quality. The offer from VSSW is more expensive that the sublet, 17 more euros per month with 100 euros more for the deposit. Any ideas what to consider when choosing my option?
#Subleased room or accept the VSSW offer? Both at the same dorm but with a different price

Subletting dorms is (most of the time) not allowed, as it's governmental subsizied housing and hence not made for "giving it to others"
Possibly you won't be able to register your address as "officially living there" if you take the sublet offer
Regardless of that, sublets CAN be allowed in special cases eg if the main tenant is going abroad for a year for some student exchange - but then obviously it's timely limited, and you'll end up having to find a new flat once again.
So in your situation I'd absolutely take the offer directly with the STW (studierendenwerk), much less hassle
Pfaffenhof seems to be an exception though
Exception of what?
Again, there are exceptions, yes, but they do not beat a direct contract with a state subsidized company in terms of security
Ah, private, i see
I'd still take the direct one as again, less troubles that can show up
Imagine the main renter suddenly wants his room back
But that extra cost though
360 vs 377
400 vs 500 kaution
I don't even know what they're offering
Right now im trying to ask whether i can get some pictures of the room from the landlords
Yes. 17 Euro difference for peace lol
Oh you mean peace of mind, lol
Also you're aware internet eg isn't included right, there will be some extra costs anyways
Idk, i just expected a bit of an upgrade with that kind of kaution ya know
You're getting the Kaution back in the end
Still a huge investment
And Id trust a landlord more with my Kaution than a random tenant
.... Of 100 euro? That's 6h of work
There will be procedures for the sublet
With, again, a random tenant that can rip you off with a weird contract
Are german companies all that fair to its employees that you're certain i can get that much money, in that length of time, with a part time job?
Peace of mind >>>> 100 euro. You do you
That's minimum wage.
So yes, any German company will pay you enough to cover that
Yeah, i can see that
Very different from my nation where minimum wage can be waived if your company is small or poor enough
Sorry, 7 hours
Ill think about it i suppose
20 hours per week, 80 hours per month
i hope that can recover my monthly allowance
that is if i can even get a job, ahahahah
@echo monolith , is there any potential that a higher kaution means a somewhat higher quality room?
Or does it only change when the demand has changed?
Also I've read a lot about this company on reddit and how some rooms / flats are full of mold and stuff
So just look at them and uh take whichever seems better
Potentially there's a reason why the tenant is trying to get rid of the room, u know.
And once you're there you can still move again if you find something better
Eh, beggars can't really be choosers
If i really need to clean up mold, so be it
Beggars don't go to Stuttgart
and im a beggar from the beggiest of nations
Beggars go to stuttgart to get a job at its nation, to have a chance against nepotism
Uhm, no. If the mold is under the wallpaper inside the walls, you do not clean it. You wreck down the whole house
I'm paying 250 in rent and I have a whole kitchen, balcony, bedroom, on a whole of 55sqm
Again, we'll see, Because at this point, i cannot afford a place with rent 400 euros above
How tho?
Bruh
rage bait
Well, i guess that's my monkey's paw for you
Anyways though luck, let me know if you need someone to check a rental contract or internet contract or something
Uni stuttgart accepts students with no german language certificate AND they do their own diploma equivalency
If you can check out my room in stuttgart, that'll be nice, hahahahaha
So does my uni for English courses
Masters mainly
Lucky you, im entering electrical engineering
If you pay for the fuel
RWTH aachen needs me to take the GRE while the other top unis are in german
We do not have prestige in German unis btw
There was one that has this ambiguous equivalency requirement
The uni in Bielefeld is just as good as the one in Hamburg and the one in Stuttgart
With the exception that foreign students focus on those 5 unis which raise the housing prices into oblivion
Eh, sowieso
False usage of sowieso
no turning back now
isn't sowieso "let it be" or "it is what it is"?

Ok, then what is it?
It's a nuance difference I can not explain to someone on A level lol
Bruh
It has no 1:1 English equivalent
If you're not explaining it, i will be using it without regard ya know, hahahaha
Sure, do that
Why do you have to be so passive aggressive sometimes m8?
Alright, it feels that way sometimes when I'm talking with you
Anyways, Better an offer than no offer at all
besides, i have no SCHUFA document, i can't really house hunt in WG Gesucht because of that
Why not?
Just tell them you're a foreign student and don't have one
It'll make you sick
I thought it's mandatory
No
I feel like the dorm owners would be honest more about their dorms if the mold is really that bad
If they need the money they won't be honest about anything
Unless private establishments has immunities or, well, pulled strings
And here i thought I'm visiting Germany
If they got punished for it there would be no mould
Why though? I mean why didn't they get punished?
Who knows
I thought Germany was supposed to be this near perfect and orderly country
Maybe the rent is low so the tenants chose to bear with it
with paperwork to impede any sort of leeways, loopholes, and bad faith
Or they just use temporary fixes to make them go away like painting over the mould
That has always been in my mindset for some time. I mean i know that the glamour of living abroad isn't always true, but come on, if America has OSHA, surely Germany has one of theirs right?
They definitely have an equivalent
Osha doesn't cover anything either, there are still many terribly built American buildings
Point is, i thought ignoring mold like that is more common in poor third world countries like us
And more controlled and regulated in first world countries
especially in private establishments
Uh no lol
you know how much of my people moved aboad permanently just because they hate it here, some of it when it comes to QoLs?
How much they mocked this country for being sloppy, dirty, lazy, slow moving, and opportunistic, the bad kind of way?
Qol?
I wonder how they are now, im guessing that being paid in euros helped them shut up
Well thats the reason people immigrate no? They don't like where they live
So things aside from the economy like housing situations, street conditions, public transportations and how well they're maintained, etc.
Well I'm just a tad disappointed that i'd encounter the same QoL troubles there compared to here. These people spoke of these nations as flawless valhalla while they spoke of our nation as hell on earth. I guess I'm just tired of hearing that same thing, while in reality, problems abroad aint too different than here. The only big difference is that matters is that we're paid in rupiahs while they're paid in euros and dollars
Feels, scummy
The least they can do is not mock our country to oblivion and its people as if we're not trying to do our best here.
Yeah Germany is not a "flawless nation". The issues remain the same. One example that's very simple to understand (in my opinion):
Kids in third world countries get bullied at school for wearing torn clothing, maybe not even owning shoes.
Every kid in Germany surely has shoes, but they'll get bullied for not wearing Nike or Adidas. I got bullied because I (as a girl) was sharing clothes with my brother, so I mostly wore boy-ish clothes. Mentally? Neither of those kids is off better
In cities like Munich and Stuttgart it's not necessary for landlords to fix mold issues, because they WILL find someone to move in easily without fixing the issue 🤷♀️
And if you do move in, and complain about the mold, they'll do a temporary fix like painting over it. You'll complain again? You're now on the red list and the landlord will do everything to try to get rid of you. You send health inspections, samples of the mold that you (expensively) gathered yourself as proof with a professional? They'll go "oh sorry yeah you're right. You have to immediately leave the flat because of the health hazard. We will terminate the contract immediately, compensate you with a month's rent so you can go into a hotel in the meantime. Bye!" - fix nothing and get a new tenant. Congrats, you're now homeless
If you're worried about stuff like this, it makes a lot of sense to join the Mieterschutzbund. They will help you protect yourself against predatory landlords.
Also, I know it probably wasn't meant like this, but it comes across as pretty sheltered/privileged to claim that the mental situation of a child without proper clothes or footwear in an impoverished country or family situation is the same as one who shares clothes with a sibling in Germany. Maybe both get bullied at school, but the problems for the former go well beyond that.
There is a difference, and that's part of the reason you don't see many Germans clamouring for a chance to move to Indonesia. Germany has problems, that's for sure, but the quality of life is overall quite high. Street conditions are good. Public transport safe and convenient, despite being late sometimes. Streets are clean. Worker protections are comparatively good, social safety net comparatively developed. Some middle ground between self-described third world and perfect valhalla 😉
If only our people who moved there wasnt so egoistic and prideful about it
Someone said to me that some of them would alienate our people whove just moved
Imagine that, being ignorant of your own kin
Anyways, thanks for the tips, if there is a possibility to move to a better dorm, ill take it, but for now, ill take whatever offer i can get
