Health insurance, HRT as a student

Hi, can someone tell me about these two things? Information is pretty all over about these sadly.

Firstly, how does health insurance work for students? I'm an EU citizen.

Secondly, I've heard that health insurance covers HRT but would it cover it for me as a student as well?

are you moving to germany as an Erasmus student or you are just moving there the same way we do as workers? (sry for my english xd)

When I asked the same thing, I was told this "in Deutschland werden die Kosten der Hormonbehandlung grundsätzlich auch von der Krankenkasse übernommen, allerdings braucht es dafür ein psychologisches Gutachten, das bestätigt, dass du trans* bist" (In Germany, the costs of hormone treatment are generally covered by health insurance, but you need a psychological report confirming that you are trans*)

btw I asked that to a LGTBIQ+ association of the city I want to live in, so I recommend you to do the same but with the city you wanna move to. You could ask them about the health insurance and the process you need to follow to finally get your treatment

If you're in EU you most likely have an EHIC insurance card, which is valid in Germany. That means your home insurance would still be valid, and would cover the same costs they do right now. You should get in touch with your insurance about this

but it is not forever, is it? For example, in Spain we have the TSE (European health card) and it lasts a maximum of 3 months. Until then you should find a job so you can get the insurance of that country and the card of your own country won't be needed anymore. Idk how that works as a student

I have public insurance but they dont cover hrt here, what then?

The ehic lasts 10 years, I just got a new one bc I was travelling to Italy and it lasts till 2034

Your visa will only allow 140 full / 280 half days. You'll be in mandatory eg retirement and accident insurance, your health insurance is not relevant in that

For a different (work) visa, extending those 140 days, rules will look different. But u can't do that while studying anyways

Then they'll also not cover it in Germany

They will have some kind of "limit" to pay for you, as in "for treatments abroad we charge 10% of the treatment costs from you, but max 100 Euro per year. For non mandatory treatments contact us first /... " or something like that

Once again I'd get in touch with your insurance for the hrt and ask what the options are when you're abroad

Idk if German public insurance covers it, but voluntarily getting into German insurance would cost you 130 euro per month as a student

I can only find the costs with insurance being 'roughly 40 eur per month' depending on what exactly u need

But that's with insurance meaning u pay max 10 euro for individual medicine anyways, so I can't say the price without

Not any that I know, everyone in Germany is in mandatory health insurance, and since the public one does cover it, most people are covered with that. I'd rather ask YOUR home insurance for the prices

The "proper" way here is basically impossible

It would have to be covered all by myself, therapy included

there's nothing free here and we are poor compared to Germany haahhaha btw you can find some scholarships which cover all costs

it is so much easier in Germany but they are a little behind on trans policy

but I think it can be "easy" as well there, who can help you more are LGTBIQ+ services of Germany

they told me I could get my medication there with 0 cost once i am insured as a worker

ok well now im kinda confused, someone else told me something else now, that EHIC coverage depends on the country that im STAYING in

Article 19 of Regulation 883/2004 says that "shall be provided on behalf of the competent institution by the institution of the place of stay, in accordance with the provisions of the legislation it applies, as though the persons concerned were insured under the said legislation"

"Unless otherwise provided for by paragraph 2, an insured person and the members of his family staying in a Member State other than the competent Member State shall be entitled to the benefits in kind which become necessary on medical grounds during their stay, taking into account the nature of the benefits and the expected length of the stay."
