Hello,

I’m planning going to university in Germany ( at public ones) . The thing is that I don’t know how to cook 😅. Do german public universities have canteens or so? If yes, please be honest, is the food okay? Healthy too? I heard something about “Mensa” , don’t know exactly what it is. Is it like an external company that provides food for students?

Waiting for your answers.
Thank you!

Mensa food is mostly ok, cheap and depending on what you eat can be decently healthy

it used to be that the food was a lot cheaper but these days the price is getting up there imo

#

although it's still ok

#

like 3.60€ for lunch

that's still cheap

cheaper than non-mensa food

#

but I was used to the 2.60€ food and I've been sad ever since it got more expensive

Not all uni mensas have food in the morning and/or evening. Quality can depend, but I was lucky at the unis I went to ^^
Also, the price doesn't tell you too much, because sometimes, one or more side dishes are included in the base price, and sometimes they're not. If the base price is under 2€, all side dishes are probably paid for extra.

If you want to find out what a specific mensa is offering, some have websites with the current week's menu. Might be slightly different right now as it's not main lecture time right now, but will give you some impression.

Y'all are getting steals for food. Here in Munich, it's by weight and I don't know anyone who's paid less than €5 on a good day.

As said, it is different everywhere. At my Uni, our mensas are like small cafeterias, but are only open for lunch. The prices are quite good and the food is alright. You can usually see the menus and prices posted online, I usually decide whether I want to eat at the mensa or not based on the menu for that day. They usually have at least one vegan option.

If you attend a uni that doesn't really have mensas open for breakfast or dinner, then you can consider things like bakeries, and many grocery stores have salad bars where you pay based on weight and sometimes hot food bars as well!

So it won’t be like a serious problem if I have no clue how to cook, right? 😅

#

Need to learn tho for the weekend

#

But during the week I’m ok yes?

Even on weekends just get some packed salads or fries or mixed veggies that you just have to fry

#

It's really not hard. I have my phases of depresso where I won't cook, but there's these spice mixes (Knorr fix) that come with a 'recipe' to follow (just chop up veggies, cook or fry something), these are decent. Frozen ready foods to just throw in a pot or pan. Works

#

Frozen, just fry and eat, already with spices

#

Just chop up some paprika, add the spice mix and water

#

There's thousand options as long as you have a stove, you'll find something don't worry

#

And those are "mid effort" foods, they're all frozen and still need to be fried. Countless ready and cooled foods are available too
