I noticed that if I were saying something like "Er ist ein netter Typ." the "netter Typ" part is nominative... which makes me think that "sein" acts as a reflexive verb here. But on the other hand, I know for a fact that there are a lot of situation where "sein" is used with accusative. So what's the pattern?

It’s not a reflexive verb. Reflexive verb means something else. But sein is always with nominative. You claim you have seen it with accusative. Can you give an example?

time adverbs are generally in accusative case, regardless of what's going on with the verb

Accusative case and nominative case are also identical except for masculine nouns so maybe you just mistook the case too.
