Reading through the transcript for the new easy german video and came across this:
"Aber trotzdem sollte die nächste Variante dann nicht die AfD sein, sondern eher sich eine neue Partei zu gründen, die man besser findet."
What I don't understand is in the 2nd half of this sentence, "sondern eher sich". I know sondern means rather, but what does the rest do/mean?
Thanks guys

"die nächste Variante" shouldn't then be X, but rather Y.

It shouldn't be "die AfD",
but rather "sich eine neue Partei zu gründen"
to found a new party, literally "for oneself a new party to found/form"

The next clause after that is a relative clause
"die man besser findet", the "die" is a relative pronoun that's referring back to "eine neue Partei"

eine neue Partei, die man besser findet
a new party, that one finds better.

So "The next variant shouldn't then be the AfD, but rather to found a new party, that one finds better."

  1. Do you know about reflexive pronouns?
  2. Do you know about Infinitivsätze (um...zu... or zu... clauses)?
  3. Do you know about relative clauses?

All 3 are used in the sentence, so if you don't know 1 or more of these topics, that may be why you had trouble understanding the sentence.

"sondern" is part of a two-part conjunction

"nicht X, sondern Y"
not X, but rather Y

Ich spiele nicht mit meinem Bruder, sondern mit meinem Schwester.
I don't play with my brother, but rather with my sister.

Wir können nicht spielen, sondern wir müssen Mutter helfen.
We can't play, but rather we need to help mom.

the "eher" just emphasizes the "rather" even more, I believe

Right, well if you use actual dictionaries to look up definitions, it will fail less often and you'll not be confused as often

@oak sedge I must say, without further context, the reflexive feels completely inappropriate to me. 🤔

#

I mean, there might be sth in the previous sentence which explains ist, but otherwise...
