the verb "umgehen"

I know that umgehen means to evade/avoid or go around I guess.
However, how come the meaning changes if the modal verb können added to it.
umgehen können means to deal with ?

Are there more verb combinations like this that change the meaning?

It doesn't depend on the modal verb. They are 2 different verbs: "etwas (Akk) umgehen", which is inseparable, i.e. stress is on -geh- (ich umgehe das Problem = I avoid/evade/bypass the roblem) vs. "mit etwas umgehen", separable, i.e. stress is on um- (Ich gehe mit dem Problem anders um = I handle the problem differently)

And yes, verbs frequently change their meaning entirely, depending on the construction they're used with.
