I get why you'd think that - after all, they're a country. Still, with islands, it's usually "von", and "aus" sounds really odd to me with "die Philippinen".

So all island get the von instead of aus

Yes, just countries get the aus. There are also a few exceptions, such as Australia, Papua New Guinea, Japan or Indonesia. Although these are islands, they are treated like countries in linguistic usage and accordingly also get an aus.

Yes, it is. Grammar-wise, England falls into the same category as Australia or Indonesia. ;)
