Frankfurt is a financial capital, its very modern but soulless. Hamburg just feels more historic and cultural.
Hello there, I have been trying to send requests for WGs through wg-gesucht to people for an accommodation. Since I've had to type everything out in German, I was wondering if anyone here wouldn't mind reading my request (Ad) that I've been wanting to send out. It'd be a great help since maybe I can somethings which I may have missed out. I'm open to discussing the inputs. Please do let me know. It'd be helpful
Hi, bit confused.
https://www.berliner-zeitung.de/en/what-happens-now-for-brits-living-in-germany-li.118652
Would I need a resident permit? I already live here and registered months ago :)
maybe
Yes you will
Germany has opted for a "declaratory" system for registering its British residents, meaning Brits living in Germany (with Anmeldung!) at the end of this year - therefore having exercised their right to freedom of movement afforded with EU membership - will need to seek a residency permit in the form of a card from their local Ausländerbehörde to confirm these rights will continue. The process to apply isn't open yet, but it will last until at least the end of June 2021. Officials say the first permits will not be issued until January 2021.
relevant paragraph
Ahh what do I need ti prove for that like I've never seen or needed one efore
Before
so long as you've been registered and living at an address in germany before the end of december
a Meldebescheinigung and / or a tenancy contract will likely be plenty
I live with my bfs parents :( so no contract
are you registered at that address?
Yeah
you should be fine then
How often you get some offers from recruiters in Xing? Because so far i got only 1. I know it is pandemic time but i thought that IT sector will have some recruiting process
Don't just try on xing, try linkedin too and job boards, and send applications actively don't wait for them
Especially if you're junior
@tight kelp i am not junior tho, and i do have linkedin. As for boards i only know glassdoor atm and ofc aforementioned websites boards
Frankfurt is a financial capital, its very modern but soulless. Hamburg just feels more historic and cultural.
@olive summit Well, Hamburgers are definetely more rude than Frankfurters. 😉 But Frankfurt not being historic or soulless is just untrue.
well I wouldn't call them "rude" North Germans just aren't talkative or extroverted. And I'm not denying any trace of historical importance in Frankfurt but its absolutely overshadowed by the towering modern skyscrapers.
So, you don't like skyscrapers?
Yeah generally, just a personal preference. They don't really reflect a country's culture since they look the same everywhere.
Not to say Hamburg doesn't have modern buildings but they don't dominate the cityscape.
I'd argue Bremen has the better Altstadt out of all these places anyway.
O.o
highly recommend a visit, especially to Schnoor
Anyway. Frankfurt and Hamburg are somewhat similar. Frankfurt has some other cities nearby that are worth a visit (Mainz, Darmstadt, Wiesbaden). It's a bit warmer. But honestly, very similar and international cities.
tbf I haven't been to that part of the country very much
much more familiar with the north so i have my bias
Yeah. I noticed...
Frankfurt old city center
And you can walk a level downstairs to the historic roman settlements beneath 😉
uh... what was your question?
oh wait i didnt post a question damn. So i was more like to ask if there more worth to look websites with job boards than XIng, Linkedin and Glassdoor?
I mean if you're looking for a job you might as well use as many resources as you can
Try indeed too
indeed exists as well but idk how good it is in germany, I just know it exists
@bold stump can you pass some links? Stepstone is kind of company but not a job board. Also i do have set LN to hire i believe
if you are looking for IT jobs you can also drop me your cv and i can have a quick look at it
(we are mostly hiring german speakers but i did hiring and some other corps so can maybe tell you if that's what german recruiters are looking for)
okay thx
Am I able to learn from home if someone I'm living with is a person at risk of (what we cant talk abt) I'm gonna ask teacher once I know what to say and have a break (cant rn because on way to school)
Well far as i know if u have someone who would be in danger if they got covid then yes you can learn from home, a friend of mine has that situation because she lived with her grandmother and thus has to learn online. Idk if u live in germany but thats what its like here @glad current
Yeah I live in Germany,
My course leader said that the risk is over bc we quarentined
Which ididnt get because it could happen again
And what if it does happen again? I was safe last time bc I wasnt in the 2 days someone with it was in class
Well far as i know if u have someone who would be in danger if they got covid then yes you can learn from home, a friend of mine has that situation because she lived with her grandmother and thus has to learn online. Idk if u live in germany but thats what its like here @glad current
@quasi stone That' s right. But the problem that many families have when their children participate in homeschooling because their family members are at risk is that parents and siblings or flatmates are also (or should also) not allowed to go to work/school/university.
yeah my bfs brother is off school because of his mum and his sister too. bf isnt in school hes looking for apprentiship and the dad is a truck driver and only here 2 days a week
Can someone help me with a bit of time? I need to read a document about applying to a particular university, but i can find it only in German.
Morning everyone, i got stopped by police today and he said i need to fix some things on my car but i didnt get a fine
I got a small paper saying i have till 1.12. To fix these things. It also says it can be approved in the police office or through technical inspection for cars.
Its a postcard that I can send back to them probably
Do I have to fill this in or the person that repaired/checked the car?
Just to add on from my previous post. I dont see why my course leaders say the risk is over when clearly it's not even when we have a class of 13 theres 2 people who dont wear their mask and one of them had the virus and now thinks they're exempt from wearing a mask. I'm scared for my boyfriends mother as shes a person at risk and no one gives a single care about safety measures in this school/class
Hi! I am from Europe and am looking for a traineeship (Ausbildung) in Germany. I looked for network administrator (netzwerkadministrator) offers on the arbeitsagentut.de website but I don't find any good results. I tried to looked for the exact job name on internet but I haven't found something that could match it. Is someone more in the known about IT jobs in Germany?
try using more sites. Try a Google search too. In Germany, Xing is a good option for job / Ausbildung searching
Nice, thanks !
@exotic barn Look für Systemadministrator or devops for the more fancy side. Also include OS-administrator, e.g. Linuxadministrator oder Linux admin. Also keep in mind there is a difference between traineeship and vocational training (Ausbildung) and internship. For vocational training, look for Fachinformatiker, especially Fachinformatiker für Systemintegration if you wanna go in the network admin direction and not in the software dev dir
@bold stump vielen Dank für deine wunderbar Antwort ! I will look into it :)

I don't know man, depends on quality and so on I guess. C&A for example has this price range:
https://www.c-and-a.com/de/de/shop/herren-bekleidung-jeans
@earnest stone
I'm asking because I just bought a pair of jeans which was supposedly imported from Germany, but it was only 10€
Profoundly good jeans, unbelievably cheap
https://www.kik.de/herrenmode/herrenbekleidung/jeans-hosen-herren-n228.html
Kik is a cheap fashion store, which is known for it's cheap prices and therefore stuff of not so good quality.
They are starting at 6€
Maybe the quality isn't that bad
This website is on my jeans
Yeah, ESPRIT jeans are usually a lot more expensive
Weird
That would imply that my jeans are a rip off
But I have just been totally fascinated with their quality
hmm
well then I wouldn't worry too much
Maybe not german, but perhaps ripped of with intense care and love for their craft... you'll never know
Yeah, that's literally what's written on the inside minus the ripped off part 😂
So I've been doing a bit of research on studying in Germany, and apparently being a student in the US requires you to take 4 AP exams to qualify for direct entry into a university, so my question is: is it usually more common for foreign students to first go to a Studienkolleg, or are those for "underperforming" people (like me, apparently)
I think it's pretty common both on the matter of language skills and also because there are many countries where a high school diploma isn't considered sufficient for entrance into US iniversity
Alright, I see
Thank you!
So if I wanna take that route I'd have to apply to a Studienkolleg separately, correct? And then apply to university again when I finish the Studienkolleg
you can read through this for a bit more info on the process
https://www.studying-in-germany.org/studienkolleg/#apply-for-a-place-at-the-studienkolleg
👍 ty
life in Germany is very different I reckon, unless you come from a neighbouring european country. A year where you get the hang of things in the Studienkolleg, speaking German and moving around Germany is definitely what I would recommend. Whether you've covered the content before or not, the content being in German is definitely a step up. However, it does tend to get competitive in some courses at the Studienkolleg
air purifier recommendations?
where do I get all those in Germany?
not sure about the filters, but you can probably get a box fan at saturn or any similar electronics store
Should I bring my sunglasses for a stay in Germany in December?
yes especially if you plan to drive. the very low angle of the sun means more intense UV light and if you are walking south, the sun on a winter day at that latitude can shine right in your face
and if it drops below zero, crystallized water in the sun is also painfully bright and reflective
agree, i was driving today and my eyes were massacred by the sunlight reflected by the streets 😔

How easy is it to get a job in hannover with English and basic german(learning it nearly learning a2)
I guess it depends on the job
Just apply and see. No need to speculate. Too many factors.
How much is a Rona test? In Germany. Just incase I need one. I dont have proper healthinsurance yet either (sorry if this steps on the rule)
nah it doesnt violate the rules
I read that the test is free until 01.12.2020
Even without KK?
I don't know what kk means. But this free thing is probably for people arriving to Germany from a "risk area"
I assume kk stands for Krankenkasse bzw Krankenversicherung
Just tell them you are privat and pay for it.
Yeah then I live here in the process of getting Kk
No ones respecting the rona rules in my class talking like 40cm apart coughing without masks
One person already had it, I had a fever the other day I'm fine today
Just I live with someone at high risk
And my schools responce is the risk is over
I think it varies by lab (or maybe time), and there are two tests, one is for antibodies to see if you had it, I saw numbers from 20 (my GP, so I guess with public KK) to 80, and for test if you have it now, 80 and up
I think highest I saw was 150? But I think those guaranteed results in 24h, in Berlin (latest average waiting time I've heard was like 3 days, in times where you had to give mit oder than 2 days for travel purposes)
And price could definitely depend on the city and how busy the labs are
In Berlin it looks very busy
@glad current
Correction, 160 for c-test, 64 for antibody test
Ahh yeah ty! I know the rly fast results is like 150
Those at the link might be fast ones, since I think link shared someone who needed 'less than 48h old' test
Welcome to modern society.
I basically lost my faith in humanity because of the pandemic.
Yeah idk man like ok we all wear masks when teachers in
When she leaves people take theirs off
Like theres no virus
Only when teachers there
"Tax Category VI : For employees who have more than one employer, receiving wages from different employments will need a second or third, or… tax card of Tax Category VI. Ideally the employment with the lower income will get Tax Category VI."
Let's say I have a full-time job and a part-time job. The full-time job pay is less than the part-time job per hour, but double the hours per month. As a result, with the full-time job I'd earn more per month. Here it says that ideally the employment with the lower income will get tax category VI. In this scenario would it mean the part-time job, or the full-time job? Since full-time per month income > part-time per month income even though part-time per hour income > full-time per hour income.
I know no matter what, I earn the same money after the tax income return is done, but then I'd have to wait until the end of the year to claim that money back. So it's better for me to have the ideal first.
And also for Germany wage calculators, if I wanted to calculate the total income of both together, would I just have to use the calculator to calculate them individually and then add the result together? (For example, plug in the first job as tax bracket one, calculate the gross income, then reset it, plug in the second job as tax bracket six, calculate the gross income, then add both results together. Or is there a way to use the calculators to do it all at once? Having issues with this.
don't take my word for it but the one with lower income would be the one with lower total monthly wage i think
And also for Germany wage calculators, if I wanted to calculate the total income of both together, would I just have to use the calculator to calculate them individually and then add the result together?
yes
if there's a calculator that allows calculating multiple jobs at once, i'm not aware of its existence and all it would do would be to reuse most of the settings for both and then simply add them up
yo, so I just got some books from the library. I was wondering if I can take pictures or scans of these books and share them with friends/family for no profit or anything like that, just as educational sources. Is that allowed, legally speaking, in Germany?
Of course it's illegal.
If you wanna do that, skip the pages that identify the library/you.
really, I thought it was fine😅
private and personal use should be allowed
even if it was illegal i can't imagine anyone caring unless you uploaded it online for others to see
like i want to share it with some people here on the server, so we could work through its exercises
and would this rule be different if I owned the book?
https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_urhg/englisch_urhg.html
ctrl-f Section 53
should be the relevant part
anyway practically speaking everybody does much worse than this on a daily basis and it would be costly and almost impossible for anyone to identify and prosecute you
Thank you so much brzrkr!!
np
from what I understand it should be allowed that I take pictures from the book(lets say 1 Kapitel) and make it available to other people for no commercial reasons. So I am in the clear
If you go to libraries in Germany, there'd be a warning next to the scanner about what's legal and not.
You're right! I completely forgot to check that sign while i was there. Thank you!
I'm looking into it a bit more and it seems that I'm out of luck, I am not allowed to make such copies.
the short of it is, I can photocopy these books (up to 75 percent, because they are still in print and are more than 25 pages) but only keep them for me. I cannot pass them on, even if there is no monetary gain.
Anyone work at a supermarket in Germany? Or what is the hourly pay for them type of jobs? Gotta calculate how many hours I need to work to have enough money to cover stuff
By googling 'gehalt lidl verkäufer' I got
Min 12.5eur/h for lidl
11eur/h for rewe
From one article from this year

How do I write an application letter for a job Haha never had to back in England;-;
It was online forms then an interview idk here
damn that's easy no way
for low level entry jobs they're honestly not /required/ but it doesn't hurt to do one. i applied for jobs in bulk without bothering to write and only attaching my cv and got a fair amount of responses despite that.
i hate writing those things too so i simply don't
just tailor your cv to match the german format and it should be sufficient, i believe
hello, my flight to germany is after 2 weeks. should i get pcr test before? when i got my visa they gave me instructions paper but it has not cleared anything about corona test.
what kind of jobs are you guys applying to that dont require cover letters? ive been searching for internships for a while now in engineering and they all want cover letters
i wouldnt consider anything engineering related as entry level lol
that's a bit specialised
@dry ravine it's actually more important for junior positions to have a cover letter because the CV usually is kinda empty 😄
but the bigger corps have web forms anyway and sometimes they ask for cover letter but only the CV is forwarded
For engineering internships just write "yes/no matlab; yes/no simulink; yes/no solidworks; yes/no electronics; yes/no metal working" 😛
i still have to write cover letters
yeah, i mean, for interns i would actually read the cover letter... so i would recommend to put some work into them.
Mines just for a job at np markt
They want like an application letter posted to them so I'm guessing like a cover letter of somesort
Hey, I have a question, would an American born citizen moving to Germany in hopes of becoming German, have to renounce their American citizenship when attempting to earn German citizenship?
If you checked toytown, there are workarounds to keep both.
would be useful to actually post links to those workarounds rather than telling them to check toytown
I've only heard of a few pretty limited exceptions to the rule that americans have to give up german citizenship, so any additional info on that from toytown would be news to me
both the US and Germany allow dual citizenship
For real? as far as i know,(legally) that only works if you born in Germany or with parents who are citizens
hi all and sorry, can i ask this? is it easier to find a job though online job sites while im in my current country or i have to be in Germany first to look for a job there?
@tropic edge I know there are multiple ways to obtain German citizenship and one is by blood. An american friend of mine is currently going through this process so I doubt she will have to revoke her US citizenship at the end
unless there have been recent legislation changes, Germany only allows dual citizenship if you are born with it, if the other country is in the EU, or if the other country does not allow its citizens to get rid of their citizenship. I've heard that it might be possible to keep one's old citizenship if one can argue that they cannot afford to give up their old citizenship (relevant in the case of the US) but I don't know of anyone who has done that. I've also heard some people suggest just lying to the German government and telling them you'll renounce it and then never do it, but that's both probably not recommended and also certainly not within what's legal in Germany.
Those of you claiming that there are workarounds or that it's simple to keep one's American citizenship when gaining German citizenship, please post literally anything to back that up and explain how this is done, both so that people here can benefit from that information (for instance, me, an American living here who would love the opportunity for dual citizenship) and so it's clear you're not disseminating demonstrably false information
i wonder if you have to renounce first before getting citizenship
or do you get it first and afterwards you are compelled to renounce your old citizenship
I'm not "disseminating demonstrably false information", one of her parents is of German origin (and nationality) which entitles her to dual citizenship--she just did not receive it at birth
and yes sometimes exceptions can be made for hardship, but I assume that is for countries with despotic governments in which you could be punished for renouncing your citizenship. For instance, my uncle maintained his Iranian citizenship when becoming a German citizen.
I knew one American who kept both
So it can definitely be done
It sounded like it wasn't a walk in the park though
I think it happens automatically as you get the new one.
it definitely doesn't happen automatically, 'cause you have to pay to renounce your citizenship (at least as an American) and the American government def doesn't automatically get rid of it if you get a foreign one
I remember hearing that you have to sign something promising to get rid of your old citizenship but I'm not sure
A guy in Democrats Abroad apparently kept his US citizenship when getting Spanish citizenship back in the day by telling them he'd get rid of it and never doing that, and he claims this would work here in Germany to younger Dems Abroad members, but I wager this is probably not a recommended course of action
Im sure Spain doesnt allow dual citizenship with the US
Only with iberoamerican countries, andorra, portugal, equatorial guinea and maybe philippines
Maybe its a thing for puerto ricans
According to this site its possible to take advantage of the laws here https://www.dualcitizenship.com/free-consultation/spain.html
I feel it's better to keep an american citizenship tbh, just my own advice
For example, if a U.S. citizen acquires Spanish citizenship, Spain requires the person to renounce U.S. citizenship, but this is usually insufficient for the American to lose U.S. citizenship. In this scenario, Spain will view the person as solely a Spanish citizen, whereas the U.S. will still treat the individual as an American citizen. Practically, the individual will hold U.S. and Spanish dual citizenship.
Maybe its similar in germany
as i wish i could work in the US since they got a shitton of engineering jobs but no citizenship, no thank you
thanks
yeah this is what the guy from Democrats Abroad was talking about iirc
Engineering is not doing so well in Germany/Europe?
hi all and sorry, can i ask this? is it easier to find a job though online job sites while im in my current country or i have to be in Germany first to look for a job there?
Woah, deja vu.
are many music videos on youtube blocked in germany
or are they not blocked anymore
You're talking about GEMA?
Not anymore.
Most popular songs have legal version on youtube now.
very nice
thanks
You plan to move here or something?
I just use a VPN whenever something is blocked
I'm from the USA, and I'm hoping to apply to Germany for university. I checked the DAAD and it says I need one more AP test in science, but a lot of the courses I have been taking are above the AP level of courses. Would that factor into the 4 required AP tests or would I have to take an AP test regardless?
what do you mean by "above the AP level"? What sorts of tests/paperwork/certification do you have of your performance in them?
my instinct is that they'll require the AP test but if it's IB or something it's possible that wouldn't be the case
Well, currently in Math I'm taking Mutlivariable Calculus, and I will be taking other college-level math courses next semester and year. They're graded as regular high school courses, as in they show up on my transcript and I have received a letter grade and a teacher evaluation on them
how is it documented that they're college-level? Are you taking them at a university for high school credit? Or is it something else?
Do employers not care what grades u got in school or what
Like for a supermarket job
Not or a high end one
in my experience they care very little even for jobs where it's more relevant lol
Yeah bc when my bf transferred my CV and made it into a German one, like he didnt take the grades because he said they dont rly want a list of all ur subjects and grades
Highschool in UK I took uh 10 subjects
And got 10 grades
Then a level /abitur equivalent? I took 4
Well 4.5 since one grade is like half a course
I'm like do they not wanna see all my good grades ;-;
I'll have to look into the specifics, but I'm taking them at my high school at a college level, and they count for high school credit. I will look into exactly what it counts as
Is this text channel strictly for living in Germany or about studying at a Studienkolleg, cause I not sure where to ask question about that?
Anything related to stuff like that.
If you want to work, live, study, etc. in DACH.
Or if you have a question about those ideas.
Ah perfect! I was wondering about going to a Studienkolleg and not sure if they are any good, like found this https://studienkolleg-duesseldorf.de/en/german-courses/intensive-german-course/
Not sure if they are actually any good though, I'm v passionate to learn German
If anyone did courses in Germany in a Studienkolleg or even in their home country that they think really helped them improve their German I'd love to know
@vivid anchor uni-assist is another good website to check your qualifications since many German unis use it as a portal for their international applicants
ngl 500+ euros is pretty insane for a simple German course, but since it's a Studienkolleg and might give you a certificate it could be worth it
what level does that course get u to?
I'm not sure on what is a good price or where to even get some decent course on German
Supposedly it does one level in a month if I understood correctly
well heres some perspective, a typical semesterfee for an actual uni is around 300 euros
I'm at A2 roughly at least according to a Goethe Institut from the level my school in our country teaches it
500+ euros just for a month of courses is more than rent for lots of single rooms tbh
Well said but it is meant to be an intensive course which I thought was why the ramped up fees
imo only take this if you need it to fulfill a missing requirement that a uni needs
that's the point of a Studienkolleg
like a program you're applying to requires B2 or what have you
Ah okay I understand
I currently doing college in my country but its more so for my 3rd year abroad is what I'm concerned about
There are better (and cheaper) ways to improve your German imo
whats the dif from a1 to a2
Usually when someone does a Studienkolleg it's to get the proper math, science, etc. qualifications they didnt achieve in high school
This is especially common for Americans because our diplomas arent equal to Abiturs
I understand a Studienkolleg is directed for that sort, but I'm unsure as to what's a better method of learning in a short period (like over the summer of next year)
I live in Europe too btw
Since next Summer is my best shot at getting up to speed
Oh you're in Europe but not Germany?
I live in Ireland yes
Well I think it's good to keep up daily self study, once you get there a lot of stuff comes naturally (that's how it worked for me)
Ah that's fair enough, yeah I'm being persistent with daily German just not sure if I'll be up to speed
intensive courses can be good but a lot of what's taught you can also learn on your own
then there are the various intricacies that you pickup once you get there
That is v fair, I can only imagine tho that in Germany it'd be picked up much quicker given full immersion
Or at least as much immersion as you can have
Yeah that is true, so you're doing a program abroad or something?
Well my course allows for 3rd year to be spent abroad or a project, obv abroad and Germany is where I'd love to go
From the colleges I looked at, I require a B2
I see. What's your level now?
Uhh I never got officially tested but A2 pretty sure
How long do you have?
oh so it's an exchange program but it requires a certain German level
Yes and I have until the end of the upcoming Summer to be at that level
B2 afaik is quite high so that's my concern yeah
there are no other programs which dont have such a high requirement?
Not for my course sadly
Can't you just take English courses? Like from the master programs.
In Germany I mean.
The universities my university partnered with only allow for it to be in German
I checked to see if any English courses but all in German
It is primarily taken by the language students but I wanna go to Germany so
You can't seek out other programs and ask your uni if they satisfy similar 3rd year requirements? My uni allows that sometimes.
What do you study?
Computer Science and I could try but I doubt I'd get much luck
Interesting.
There is a computer science with language option but I didn't take that since it has less comp sci related modules and I know I can learn German myself and don't need it integrated into my degree
As a degree I meant
Here I am tho lol
What are the options? The unis in Germany I mean.
might just be worth asking: "I'm not a language student but still would like to study in Germany, I dont have the time to get my German to b2 for the programs the uni is partnered with"
or something like that lol
in the US at least study abroad is pretty flexible but even here STEM students have a tough time fitting it into their degree plan
There's a lott of unis in Germany it is partnered with but the one I'd love to go to is Technical University of Munich given its great for comp sci and tech related degrees plus Munich seems really nice. Hm that is fair yeah I'll have to try but the uni will most likely just tell me to go to another country instead if I wanna pursue, I had a friend who finished degree and he couldn't go to the country he wanted to given he didn't have the language requirement
It's kind of a joke of a system imo
I mean I'm pretty sure TUM offers a lot of Informatik courses in English.
I think so too, they just only allow for it to be taken auf Deutsch
Its seen as improving another language
rather than the experience itself
B2 is pretty lofty especially for people who have never been there or arent even language students
well with all this new info I'd say the intensive course is probably a good option but I'm afraid you'll be rushing to meet a deadline and it could interfere with your degree
Yeah I can understand that, hence I have thought about a Studienkolleg
Well thats a shame but yeah the uni doesnt really allow for flexibility unforunately
Would a Studienkolleg be best bet of that option or is there a better type of course?
Well I know it can be difficult with the current situation but in person is always preferable for language courses
My course only requires a B2 and not a W-course or whatever they call it in a Studienkolleg for Science
Hm that's fair yeah I really don't wanna touch an online format for a course
I can afford to for a course in Germany provided I work from here until then so that's not a major problem just what is a concern is finding a course that is worth it
Perhaps the language department or some of the students taking German at your school have some advice
Because im really only familiar with what I've taken and it's nowhere near Düsseldorf or München
and the US system differs greatly ofc
Yeah I'll give that a shot, did you take any course in Germany or have you learnt from the US?
I took a few courses in the US and did alright but they weren't intensive or anything. I had a decent foundation but a lot was learned once I arrived there. My program itself was mostly in English but gave us the option to take some courses entirely in German.
"there" as in Germany?
It was an exchange program but heavily catered to Americans
Yeah
so no language requirement just highly advised I guess lmao, since some people didnt know any german coming into it
Ah damn yeah I'd really love to visit Germany and I don't wanna let my language level be a barrier especially since I do wanna learn it and it is possible, just quite expensive. lmao well at least you benefited from it
Do you know your German level?
probably B1, I've never taken the test since no programs I've taken required it. I work with farmers now so lofty German isnt exactly expected.
Yeah it really is a shame it appears your uni is restricting your options severely, definitely worth consulting them about other possibilities though
Hm that's fair yeah, I'll have to do that. It's quite awkward for sure. Would you say a Studienkolleg is the fastest method of learning however?
I've never taken one but if it only lasts a month and brands itself as "intensive" then probably
for what you need to learn at least
I've about 4 months over summer and can take it then
And in meantime I'll be practicing my German
From A2
and need to get to B2
9 months at home learning and 4 months (if necessary) in Germany at a Studienkolleg
I think it's entirely possible, just don't let it comprimise your degree
^
That's true, thank you both v much! I appreciate the help!
Yeah np here to help
I am
Also I know this isnt what you want but you could wait until after you graduate and do your masters in Germany, since most masters program are in english
Or you know just get a job.
In Germany.
Why waste time doing masters.
And no, most masters are not in English.
Even for CS.
https://studienkolleg-duesseldorf.de/en/german-courses/intensive-german-course/ Is for learning German from what it appears to be
Well theres certainly a larger selection than Bachelors
So you're considering to study German in Germany? In that Studienkolleg or some VHS or some language school?
How about your courses?
But then again that's why I'm here
Like a year off college?
I mean that Studienkolleg is a language course in Germany, right?
Yes
So you can't be doing both your uni in Ireland and this at the same time.
Enough to shoot to B2?
I was hoping so, I have from now until then to improve from A2 to be able to hit B2 after
you can definitely make it up to b2 before summer
thats like what 6 months from now?
that's quite an easy goal
It is? That sounds quite difficult
Mind I ask what level you are right now? And damn
b2-c1
But he has his university too.
i scored for c1 after 9 months of intensive learning( with a little too much lollygagging ), and I started from scratch
Damn, that's impressive
I'd stick to a nice language school, with good rep
if you get a teacher recommendation at said nice school, you could make leaps and bounds for the summer you spend in Germany
like as in, someone recommends a nice teacher to you
Attending two courses at once would be quite difficult from here until the end of the year
How can you show your B2 qualifications? A test or just finishing a course like the ones in language school?
Do you mean attending a whole language school?
I can do a Goethe test which is the idea
Once I return from college
from the course*
it is very doable
One thing I'm a bit confused about. I though you EU guys have Erasmus program for exchange.
We do yes
B2 is an exam, that one can prepare for beforehand. You got this chief!
Because the way you described it to me this exchange program you're interested in are for language majors.
It's weird they don't have more normal program for CS students.
Ay I appreciate it! Well see it isn't for language majors just usually only done by language majors or people who are good at a language
It is
Did you attend a language school to get to where you are now? Or did you do at home learning
I attended a language school in Germany
Were you there for the whole 9 months?
yeah, basically
i took 8 months of class, and one month spent preparing for the TestDaF
went from a1.2 to b2.2 in those 8 months
I'll be in Germany likely at a B1.1 or B1.2 level and need to have my B2 in 4 months, that should be fine yes? I'm currently living in an English speaking country
I mean you could take a look at the tests now and have a crack at it. I mean, I could go on and on about test prep and language learning but the short of it is this: You definitely can make it! For the test, at the very least. But your actual language ability, that is really the one that only time can amend.
That is fair, thank you! I'll just have to crack away at it for the test
Well my 3rd year offers a project or a year abroad
I love German and always wanted to visit Germany and learn the language so
Decided I'll spend a year there for my 3rd year
I mean it seems applying for a summer internship in Germany seems like it'll be less stressful.
True but I'm not sure if I'll have the language up to scratch
Or that I'll even land a job
In Ireland at least its almost impossible to grab a job
Alright, good luck.
Thank you!
If you don't care about quality, the cheapest option for a summer language course would most likely be a VHS in some cheap city.
Quality of learning or quality of where I live
Because the other guy above recommended you to find a good language school.
Quality of teaching.
Would leaning at language school in Ireland be pretty bad?
i mean, i studied in a really cheap school that turned out to be great up until b2. I paid 215 per 4 weeks, 4 days a week and 3 hours per day.
It's a mixed bag with teachers, some are great and some aren't. But you could always learn if you ask the right questions, I guess.
Hm that's fair, I just am currently in uni as a fulltime student so can't go to another country except for during Summer
Just try everything.
Google around, there are probably some summer school option in Germany too.
Something like https://summerstudents.desy.de/
Or research internships and such.
Thank you! I'll just look into it all yeah
bro
comapred to my home it's horrible
i cant buy proper buckets, they're all a mix of wings crisps bites and whatnot
i just want 9 chicken pieces for me and my friend, how hard can that be
McDonald's kinda better in the US too but the German ones gave away free socks once
The only good thing from German KFC is Hot Wings Tuesday.
I've never been to KFC here, haven't noticed any major difference in quality between McDonalds in the US and here. Norwegian McDonalds has garlic sauce though and I'm mad German McDonalds doesn't
Egal in welchem Land ich bin vermeide ich meistens immer McDonald’s
I just avoid eating out in general in Germany.
Food is not very good. Or more correctly, the ones I can afford are not that good.
@waxen spire please continue the conversation here.
Sure
The VHS should have courses called "Deutsche als Fremdsprache". For example, this: https://www.stadt-muenster.de/vhs/jahresprogramm/sprachen-und-laender.html?tx_vhsconnect_category[eventId]=8419328&tx_vhsconnect_category[categoryId]=KAT4175273&tx_vhsconnect_category[action]=show&tx_vhsconnect_category[controller]=Event&cHash=17b19400d5eb224a7d0c12b47f558d3e
That''s probably what you want. You can probably go in and ask them about it.
Und habe deutsch in 30jahren gelernt
is your knowledge completely 0? can you at least say the numbers and alphabet and colours? @waxen spire this is like a1 + learning to introduce yourself and your hobbies
@cosmic pagoda i just want to teach german :(
I know numbers alphabet how to introduce, greetings and stuff.
It doesnt take too long to study those also
@lavish cave sag mal ich will nur beibringen
they will do a placement test at the VHS usually, to see what course to put you in. this is called ein Einstufungstest
Integration class?
i doubt any courses will start in December though, maybe after the Christmas break in January
Integration classes are usually like a year long and go to b1 and include a citizenship test
It’s okey I can self study at this time
Im trying to find the course in the website right now
Found it
Sprache > Deutsch als Fremdsprache > Kurse maybe
The website is a bit complicated
if you're okay privacy wise you can send me the link and i can try to help
Falafel so dryyy
You can do italki teachers, it's one on one, you get full hour of attention and you don't need to leave home
Hardest part is finding teacher that fits your learning style, but worth the effort
Anyone who took the DSD2 exam this year?
Thank you! I'll look into it trying to find something that works
https://i.redd.it/doqt114zlo361.png
Is there a german counterpart for this?
yesss that would be amazing
Not the same thing, but theres a "wohnen für Hilfe" thing where students can live with some senior citizens at their home and help them out and live really cheap or rent-free
Does that crown have a function in the government or is it only aesthetical? (I hope my question fits into the channel)
probably just for the states which were historically monarchies, never seen it for NRW or Niedersachsen
@wraith hazel these are Volkskronen and have no relation to government function.
I see, thank you both
hello i have a question , it's about DHL
Then ask
Does someone know how much does the L Box in DHL coast? I don't have one myself and i want to buy it directly there
Doesn't the website list the price?
only how much the sending coast but not plus the Box
This one?
Is there anyone using the Deutsche Bank studentenkonto here?
how do I cancel a wifi contract? can it be done by email or must it be done via writing like most things in germany? for reference it's with unitymedia and I'm just doing it before the contract renews
probably just by calling the customer service line, you might have to sign something however
I just recently canceled my sperrkonto with deutsche bank.
What was your experience like with Deutsche Bank? @bold crag
I would send a letter to be sure (Einschreiben)
im going to study language for like 8 months before i start my postgraduate program. can i do praktikum during language studies?
Most likely no.
What do you mean with Praktikum? Internships? Or part-time?
Doesn't language-learning visa/residence permit has regulations about the hours of language class you need to do per week/month?
If its unpaid it's not really an issue
I'm sure it can vary based on the employer though, I'm working on a farm to prepare for my Ausbildung next year since no spots were left this year
Actually the other way around is probably easier. Get an internship in Germany. Get your visa/permit based on that. Then enroll in the local language school.
keep in mind a praktikum visa only lasts the duration of the praktikum
also I'm technically on a whole different Visa, rn my boss is trying to figure out if I'd be considered part time
The situation is like this: I start language courses in a few days, I get an internship in some company or a factory during this period, i start my postgraduate study WS having a bit of experience.
I have a visa which says conditional admission in a university
Ausländerbehörde.
The foreigner/immgration office.
I guess your master program has a language requirement. So you probably are enrolled in some language class, perhaps to pass the DSH.
In that case, I'd guess you don't have a language learning visa, but a normal student one that will allow you some part-time.
Ah yes like Ausländeramt. Ye it’s a student visa
well you can work on a student visa anyway, but typically only part time
Internship counts as part time?
Where do you guys think one could apply for a job in München with excellent English skills,A2/B1 Deutschand and average IT skills + a lot of more experience in technical stuff?
@odd coyote my boss is gonna call the Ausländerbehörde and ask, I'll let you know what he says.
Danke schön
could be actually based on how much you work or maybe all internships are considered part time, I'm not sure. Internships typically have no contract if theres no pay like with mine and you can end it at any time so it's hard to categorize.
guys is there anyone here who did computer science in university
or also anyone who went to eth zurich
i would appreciate talking to anyone who did one of those since i really am short on time and need some first hand info about things like grades i should get and stuff
i would appreciate the help thank you
You're greatly limiting the amount of people that will think that they are able to answer. I might be wrong, but in my experience the stuff you plan to ask can be answered by many more people than only those studying computer science or at ETH Zurich.
Besides, if you just asked and specified, someone could answer without having to tell where they study and also without having to commit to it with a 'here'.
So my suggestion is that you ask your question and just include your plans of Zurich and computer science.
Ask the ETHZ subreddit.
Why not just look for jobs in the same field or degree?
I don't know your exact situation. But usually with student visa, there's a limit of how much hours you can work per week or something.
Imo, it's always best to ask the ABH, rather than secondhand info from online strangers.
when I had a student visa it was max 40 hours every 2 weeks I believe, but as he said the ABH has a definitive answer
i mean it still is a fact that i should get first hand information from people who have already studied computer science than the ones who did not... i tried to say that anyone who studied computer science but i think i have been misunderstood
As far as I understand, doesn't ETH basically admit everyone?
Then kick them out when they don't do well in the big exam.
Thanks, I’ll ask when I get to Germany
depending on the type of visa you'll get
(3) The temporary residence permit entitles the holder to take up employment totalling no more than 120 days or 240 half-days per year, and to take up a student job. This does not apply in the first year of residence during a stay for the purpose of preparatory measures for a course of study, except during holidays.
Section 16b
Further education
This is in reply to @odd coyote
For Turkish citizens a maximum of 28.80 euros
bruh I'm turkish now
cries in 100€
think it was 50 for me
really? I probably paid 93, they seem to have hiked it up
well for my student visa it was actually around 100 iirc, but the latest one I got which was only for student applicants was half that
yeah same lol, in any case I wish i could get a discount based on my nationality
Wait I have to live in Berlin?
Oh nvm it’s the Berlin branch
Thanks for the information
No problemo
no people are pretty accepting in general
of course, cunts exist, as everywhere, but they're not the norm
Even if you can afford it, getting a therapist or a psychiatrist appointment will probably take months to a year.
I'm sorry to say that.
And even if you get one, therapy and medication take time to work their job.
And it's not like if you have public insurance, these will be automatically covered. There are some rules about it. Not very straightforward ones.
I was going to suggest the counseling service the Studentenwerk/university usually offers.
But I guess you're not qualified for that.
Btw don't self-diagnose yourself with ADHD.
Have you considered talking to a doctor/shrink from your home country? Through skype or similar software.
Just curious, have you contacted your local psychiatrist?
Some of them usually has a disclaimer that their service is not covered by the public insurance.
The ones that work with the public insurance fall under Kassenärztliche Vereinigung.
in the case of arbeitslosengeld, will the time i've spent unemployed be compensated even /after/ i've found a new job? have a weird situation where i was unemployed from the 22nd to today. during this i applied for arbeitslosengeld but it was delayed due to my old job not sending in the arbeitsbescheinigung and the agentur für arbeit told me they have a time limit of 3 weeks to send it in before they can complain on my behalf with legal action. so due to no fault of my own i had to wait until the deadline (the 13th of this month) without being paid the money but have found and begin my new job right before the deadline
will obviously give them a ring regardless, but i still have to wait until the 13th before the official three weeks time is up
Perhaps ask toytown or /r/Finanzen ?
chiropractor checkups covered under TK?
they do cover some alternative medicine but i don't know about chiropractics specifically
It's probably easy to find out on their website
alright thanks I'll take a look
Hope you are doing alright mate. Are you with the TU Kaiserslautern? Most german universities offer services that will help you out with mental health issues 🙂
Here is the psychological counseling help from the uni https://www.studierendenwerk-kaiserslautern.de/kaiserslautern/beratung/psychologische-beratung/ and here again https://www.campusplus.uni-kl.de/en/students-health/depression-information-and-prevention/ from campus+
Beratung und Hilfe in allen Lebenslagen
Just call them up. Even if they are not technically allowed to help you, they'll still give you some support and can probably direct you to the best place for support 🙂
this is absolutely not true if you're self-paying or on private insurance in my experience -- I first emailed my last therapist on 17. May 2019 and had my first appointment with her 3. June 2019
the "if you can afford it" is of course the catch there though
finding a therapist with an open spot can also be a bit of a struggle, but I got quite lucky with that
This is about job in Germany posted by German company for English speakers but 3/1/2021 is Sunday while 1/3/2021 is Monday. I'm confused about the date format and as it makes huge difference for me I'm asking for clarificaiton
Germany that we all love
Good luck.
it would be pretty weird for a job opening to be up now but have a start date in March imo
i don't think that's odd
it's not impossible but I haven't usually seen postings go up that far in advance when I've looked
England and other English-speaking countries use DMY like Germany, so if they wrote the ad with the date in MDY it'd be targeting Americans specifically which seems a bit odd
idk man ive been applying to internships for a while now for march 1st and all rejections
maybe it's different for internships
I've mostly applied to like job jobs so it's possible there are different trends between those
With long Kündingungsfristen (often at 3 months), it's common for anything but low qualification jobs to be advertised up to 6 months in advance
that's what i was thinking, it takes 3 months just to leave a job. 3 months to apply in advance seems reasonable
Most of the unbefristet stuff I've seen listed has had a very "start as soon as possible" mindset so 3 months in advance seemed weird; maybe it's an industry thing though
I've been mostly applying to tech stuff so maybe things just move faster for them
How to find the radio stations available to you?
For example, I can find the list of radio stations and their frequencies that are available in my state.
But there are several of them for each frequency. What determines which one I get?
In Germany.
Never mind. Found some old list of available stations in my city.
For anybody interested, it was March and I passed first round, did very good in 2nd but waiting for answer
I see. Good luck.
Any good DRM-free ebook store in Germany? Or elsewhere for German ebooks.
buecher.de's books usually says they are ohne Kopierschutz
Even for popular titles. Kinda weird.
Because thalia.de, etc. list the same books with "family sharing" for the same price.
Hi I wanna study bachelor in Germany as a conditional admission. Is there any chance for me to be a student in Germany. I barely know German but I could improve my German level if I would be accepted. I really need your help
where are you currently studying/going to school?
Some universities require German A1, some don't, but you will still be given a German course during your study.
The best thing is to look for universities offering the degree you are looking for.
Never heard of a uni requiring A1
It's either B2 or C1, rarely something one step higher or lower. Bachelors are usually taught in German
ive seen a few accept b1 for the studienkolleg, but for actual study it's b2 or c1. trying to study and not knowing german well would be hell
depends on which i think
im not sure if most Ausbildung have a formal way of recognising language certificates or rules surrounding them
I think by most they'd simply judge from your application and interview
and obv if the program is in English there is no German requirement
There are no formal language requirements for an Ausbildung but they expect you to have a good grasp of the language otherwise you wouldn't be able to function
Well that's not entirely true since the local Kammer sets the requirements, so it can vary depending on the field. I know stuff like Baker and Farmer have no language requirement.
Ahh okay
Since after getting b1 I wanna maybe start an ausbildung
But idk hwich
Which
Or work to pay to learn b2
Just keep in mind the Ausbildungsjahr begins at various times depending on the field, for Landwirt (farmer) its 1. Aug for example.
Yee I'm finished with b1 in June:D then maybe b2 or work a bit while I find an ausbildung
i got to b1 and i felt i still couldn't speak well so then i did b2 and c1 and still feel like i can't speak well
sometimes I conduct a conversation nearly perfectly and other times I struggle I think it's very much a context and setting thing
some things i lack the vocabulary for. like the other day i got into an argument about abortion with someone and i didn't know any of the words i wanted to use
just my advice as someone doing an exchange semester with a B2, you should not go to germany to study in german without a C1
@dry ravine are you having problems understanding people day to day or is it only with your studies that you're having issues?
Im a1 rn how long would it take me to get to b2 I finish my course to b1 in June
My course is 5 days a week thing for 5h so not just here n there
I don't think anyone can give you a precise time
But that sounds intensive so it should be relatively fast
You'd best ask at your course, they probably have some expectations on how long it would take. Whether you can trust what they say depends, of course, but it'd be even worse here
Yeah my course teaches up to b1 but I can also take another course after they said to get to b2
But didnt say how long or how much it would cost
they start getting more expensive after b1 i think from my experience
i think some new rules were passed this week that raised the requirements of people teaching german as second language in language schools, idk, my teacher was telling me this
Yeah only a few people only got to do German in my high school like
U had to be picked to take german
U couldnt pick it yourself
Hi, is there anyone studies law in Germany?
Hi I'm an international student in Germany from a non-EU nation and have an "Aufenthaltstitel" for my studies. However, I recently acquired EU citizenship and now I'm not sure what to do with my Aufenthaltstitel. Should I return it to the local Bürgeramt? Or do I need to apply for a new one?
Ask the ABH?
What conditional admission?
Are you doing your German course in Germany?
What's that,?
Ausländersbehörde @exotic barn
Ye
I honestly forgot what I wanted to say lol.
Do you plan to take a test like testdaf or something?
Well I learn it at a school in Germany
Even though were in lockdown apparently I still have to go I didnt because I live with someone at super high risk lmao and apparently its voluntary from the gov
Or chancellor idk what it is here
And we take a test at the Rathaus after a2 and b1 and get a certificate
Yee it is
I thought you're preparing for DSH or some language requirements for university.
Ahh kinda but they require c1 so maybe I'd take to b2 and see anywhere else that offers c1 or start an ausbildung if b1 or b2 is good
I see. Now I kinda understand your original question.
Because integration course probably only teaches you until B1.
In einer gleichen Wohnung
was ist @raven parcel ?
.
Can anyone from Switzerland help me out? Looking to do a snack exchange with a friend of mine and was wanting to check availability of certain items so I can send unique items, please DM me if you can help!
Just learned my passport is not supported by Postident. Especially not the video chat one. Man, fuck Deutsche Post.
Seems the issue started around 2017 from googling. https://www.facebook.com/deutschepost/posts/1805883209423283/
Log into Facebook to start sharing and connecting with your friends, family, and people you know.
Some threads on /r/Germany too. With the usual /r/Germany's friendly responses.
had trouble with my id too. And I'm a EU citizen. Postident is shit
Hi I wanna ask you a question. I wanna study bachelor in Germany and I know I need to have 10.000 € for blocked account. I wanna know that will I have to pay the whole money or can I pay the money by months. I would be happy if you could reply this. Have a good day
Unfortunately it should be the whole thing at once.
It's a bit more flexible here after you've arrived.
Like you can use part-time contract to offset the requirement etc.
But ask your local German embassy.
Ok thx
Just to be sure, you mean the Finanzierungsnachweis, right? You don't have to "pay" that, you just have to proof that you have that amount on one account of yours so you can reasonably sustain yourself while studying in germany 😉
yes
Anyone preparing here for the Aufnahme Test des Studienkollegs?
Seems pretty insane, since even getting a phone number or opening an online bank account requires Postident.
The change.org's petition claimed the issue has been solved. But that was not my experience. And arguing with grumpy Post office/Postbank employee was not fun.
Does anyone know if the european diploma supplement is recognised by german universities instead of a certified translation?
Is there such thing in Germany like a free pads to uni? In the UK we can take a step up to uni course at some unis which gives u the skills etc to go to uni if u didnt get the grades, apparently theres a similar one like if you havent done the abitur you can get a "half abitur" which can let you go to uni (heard from someone else)
Not asking for myself (I have equiveltny grades)
in NRW is it illegal for an internship in the public service to be paid?
Anyone know what days in the next two week are holidays, where the shops wouldn't open?
24-26 (thursday, friday, saturday) sunday then normal sunday, then till new year's eve i guess stuff is open
tomorrow you should buy food for the next 4 days
Fantastic! Thanks! I'll probably do the shopping today to avoid tomorrow's rush
Yes
ernährung und leben
Miete, Lebensmittel, usw.
Ja was wirklich praktisch ist
einfach fragen
Is it hard to find an English speaking therapist in like the hannover/celle region? And would that be covered by private insurance? (For when I get my KK sorted)
Like the ones who can diagnose u with mental disorders? And treat u
in my experience most medical professionals have a pretty good command of english, i've visited Celle but not familiar with the practices there
Hey! Does anyone have experience with filling the long term visa application form for Germany?
bachelor in Germany is hard?
@glad current coverage might depend on the insurance, so before taking it, be sure that it really covers what you need
Also, be aware that private insurances won't take you if you have some preexisting conditions
Or maybe there's possibility, but without coverage for preexisting conditions
If you're not eligible for public insurance for some reason, then private ones have to take you under 'basis Tarif', but what exactly is covered then, I have no clue
I don't know the terms eg if mental health issues are considered, cancer and diabetes are most common that I've seen when I was looking to figure out the system
Public insurance doesn't have such limit
I don't know how diagnosis works, eg if only psychiatrist can do it, if you need some official documents about the diagnosis for example
Therapists can diagnose a bunch (if you need it for yourself), depending on their expertise, or they can forward you to someone else
I know that for prescribing medication psychiatrist is needed
(later your GP can issue medication, but most GPs from what I've heard won't give you meds without you getting them first from psychiatrist)
Public insurance does cover therapy, I don't know how many sessions though (I believe it's 'until you don't need therapy anymore')
In Berlin, finding English speaking therapist who has free spots for public insurance is close to impossible, from what people said
Finding a spot with german speaking therapist that works with public insurance is also tricky, because they're full and waiting periods are long (could be months)
I don't know how is the situation with private insured patients, if those queues are shorter
But therapists are almost fully booked
I went paying out of the pocket, for both psychiatrist and therapist, and meds are covered by my public insurance
I can't have private insurance (nor that supplemental one) because of preexisting condition
If therapy is needed, maybe good route would be to first find a therapist that has free spot and then see which insurances they work with (public vs private or none, selbstzahler is the keyword)
ahh yeah i dont have any actual diagnosed preexisting conditions just suspected ones via family and friends which i wanna get checked out for since it does affect my daily life and relationships
the queues for psychotherapy are definitely shorter if you're privately insured in my experience
there may still be trouble, but i found a therapist here quite quickly and easily
finding a psychiatrist has been more difficult but I only need that because I'm looking to be treated for ADHD, and the meds for that are regulated so that my GP can't prescribe them; my GP was able/willing to prescribe my antidepressants even prior to my seeing a therapist (though I didn't get them until after I'd done therapy myself)
you definitely need to check with individual private insurance policies re: whether they cover therapy though
mine covers 20 sessions a year but I need them to pre-approve them each year
@hazy saffron I arrived visa free and filled it out here what do you need help with
Ahh okay thanks a lot i'll look into that once ive had everything sorted :D
how does one even go about doing that? I have a Überweisung to a psychiatrist for the same thing, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Do I call my AOK and ask them or just get an appointment and then ask there at the doctors idk
my therapist found me some names and I've just been emailing them one by one asking if they have places
the first one I emailed sent me to a colleague and I went down a chain of "sorry, I don't have any vacancy for adhd patients but try my colleague"
no luck yet but I have some phone calls to make after christmas
I'm privately insured which helps, I put that in every email
it also helps that my therapist has given me documentation for the diagnosis, so I'm just looking for someone to do medication with rather than a psychiatrist who has time to diagnose me
Oh okay. Thank you so much for this information! Hope you find one soon!
Random question. Is anyone else in Vienna and just heard a strange siren type noise?
Or is it just something weird that happened in my neighborhood
There it goes again. I’m very confused, like not sure what I should be doing
@hearty wadi What does it sound like?
I think if there is a real siren and you're not sure what it is, you just have to turn on TV or radio since there will be emergency information if there is any emergency.
It’s not a constant tone, it like swells and then cuts to the start
I can’t really demonstrate it that well but it’s not like any siren that I knew existed. I looked on ORF.at and there’s nothing
Ohh, I see.
I just thought I’d ask if anyone else was hearing something because I have literally never heard a siren like this before
i heard austria is doing another lockdown, might be related
it's possible. yes, austria is doing another lockdown
Hallo all, can i check for Goethe institute conducting online lessons, they will conduct the lessons in english??
it's a german lesson, they'd probably conduct it in german
are fireworks canceled this year?
so public displays are prohibited this time around? Essentially no one can set them off?
i think u can on private property theoretically, but they're not allowed to be sold either way
afaik
some stores are rescinding their ads others arent, kinda confusing atm
ya but someone is still very new to German how do these new learners learn? see what i mean?
Question: Anyone have any experience extending a student visa by less than a year? My visa is up for renewal in March (got a temporary extension in Nov to sort out paperwork issues), but I graduate in August just five months later. Seems strange to set aside a blocked account for a full 12 months, was curious if smaller increments were possible.
TL;DR- can i use my new laptop normally then return it? I would obiviously reset it to how it was before sending it, would they still accept it?
iirc by law you can always return a product within i think 14 days from purchase. But i may be talking out of my arse here. It's always best to simply check what the seller's policies on returns are
you should ask your local Ausländerbehörde tbh
yee, that's the plan
Just figured in the month or two itll take them to get back to me, I could ask if anyone else had tried it lol
(all of the offices here have been super slow with regard to non-appointment scheduling emails)
there should be a phone number to call, at mine it's really busy but constantly trying usually puts me through to someone
ohh someone is from Austria here atm?
Anyone from Frankfurt am?
yup
Tatort
https://www.ardmediathek.de/daserste/video/maerchenfilm-im-ersten/maerchen-tipp-haensel-und-gretel/das-erste/Y3JpZDovL3JiYi1vbmxpbmUuZGUvbWFlcmNoZW5maWxtLzIwMTMtMTItMjZUMTI6MDU6MDAvaGFlbnNlbC11bmQtZ3JldGVs/

okay i need help. So i am trying to get a job and i am at finishing stuff, however they request me a copy of ID document (for example password) to upload to the system they use. Is it really a must now? Speaking of course about Austria laws and stuff
dein Passwort? Bist du dir sicher? Sie wollen wahrscheinlich deinen Ausweis/Reisepass sehen.
Gemeint war wohl 'passport'
@sullen robin passport yes, misstypo there
it's not something they must do by any stretch, in fact if they store that information they also need to ensure that they do so securely since it's personal information. I don't know if there's any law against it though, probably not. At least when I worked for amazon years ago they did ask for that
i don't consider it a particularly outlandish request, personally
@tight kelp problem is that with passport in eu they can literally destroy ya life or take you as hostage since passport has so much law power
Is your passport your only form of ID?
how do you mean?
@gloomy ledge no in my country
@tight kelp with passport one can create bank account, make some formal staff like credit etc in eu if you are eu citizen
if they wanted the original of your passport, I would be very worried, but wanting a copy is not particularly weird.
you could maybe try blacking out your passport number on the copy? I've done that when people wanted a copy of my passport for identification purposes and it was fine
if this is for right-to-work checks that is completely normal and often legally required
i'm not sure how it is in austria, but eg. in the UK the employer has to have a (unredacted) scan of your right-to-work documentation - nothing unusual
@humble bough @wise obsidian i mean i get it for verification but at same time with passport copy (and data on it) you still can make false one and create bank account or get an service agreement with telecoms
i mean, i guess? but if it's an employer then this'll go through the HR department who are ... not going to do that
i have to ask, is this your first job?
you're missing the tiny detail of them needing to have your face in addition to your documents
you can't just present any random person's documents and make a contract in their name
let alone by showing a photocopy of them
@tight kelp those documents have photography so i dont get what you mean by "my face" xd?
also yes, you can make contract, there were already such scams
because companies are not verifying much, like you can make bank account or phone on someone else name/data lmao
@wise obsidian you cant be sure, HR or not, those are ppl and ppl can do bad things for sake of self gain. There were already cases where even in banks ppl were doing shady stuff (like making payments to their own accounts or making threats to others for that)
by this logic you shouldn't give your employer your bank account details, because payroll might withdraw money from your account instead of paying in your salary
when you're working there's a certain level of trust you have to give to your employer, and one of those levels of trust is with your photo ID.
you can't open a bank account by just showing a copy or photograph of a document. If you do it in person they compare the information on the document with the person who shows it, and on the internet the verification procedures can be even stricter than real life
it's good to be attentive and perhaps a little defensive towards these things, but in my opinion you're just being naïve to an excess
@tight kelp how am I being naive when not randomly throwing IDs 🤔 ? Anyhow, they agreed to cover info on copy so there is that. And things done on internet does not mean they have strickter procedures, in fact it is quite opposite
by seeing dangers and malice that aren't there.
And things done on internet does not mean they have strickter procedures, in fact it is quite opposite
listen i've worked with this stuff, it's more strict than you think. Unless the bank in question operates illegally
because it is not dangerous to give such information to some random company and ppl 😆
sometimes it's simply necessary to accept a level of risk
if you're working for a company, you have to have a basic level of trust in them, no? like, they're not 'random company / random people', they're your employer and your coworkers
if you block out the passport number they'll likely ask you to send it without it being blocked because that passport number often needs to be recorded
yeah I'd probably ask them ahead of time; I'd black mine out when landlords asked for it but I haven't had a job that required it
when are resturants etc reopening in lower saxony?
Nobody knows
lockdown is extended till jan 31 so prolly till then
not before then*
we don't really know whether it'll stop then or will be extended again
depends on the people's ability to stay fucking home
is it extended for schools or are they still open
n is there a source for the lockdown extention
schools are closed as well
tried to look but ig im not looking good
just because u know when schools had to close from the 16th
mine stayed open until the thursday
not in friday bc were a languageschool
apparently it doesnt apply
but man people in my language school dont even follow distance or mask rules
my Volkshochschule cancelled weekend teaching at first, then all teaching when the secondary/primary schools closed too
earlier we were exempt because language school (particularly wrt integration courses) but when all the other schools shut we shut as well
yeah mines an intergration course
are they still exempt?
just im so scared going back, i took the last 2 days off cause i live with someone who had rly high risk and people in my class were showing symptoms and nothing was rly done about it
i'm not on an integration course so i don't know about those specifically, but all the communication i've got so far is that my language course isn't going forward until lockdown's over
pretty sure you can report that (and especially the fact that they're not respecting social distancing regulations etc)
yeah i told that to my teacher she said she'd watch them but its just in break time when shes not there
i asked my leaders if theres anythingi can do like maybe work from home with books and teacher messages
but the leaders said theres no risk lmao
I might change my course to a volks one depending on the cost :s
costs can vary based on my experience, for intensive language courses it's usually more expensive
integration courses are subsidised to a low cost for you anyway, aren't they?
costs should be available on the website of your nearest VHS but in my experience it's fairly cheap
i paid €388 for 10 (?) weeks of teaching, 4.5 hours a week (Intensivkurs C1)
yeah mines 195 per 100 hours
i just checked, my VHS has the Orientierungskurs (i think that's the last in the sequence of integration courses?) for €220
Is there any draft to look at of renting appartment agreement in german?
Hello. Im studying in Poland and i want to move to Germany for get a Master. I've heard a lot about free studying and cheap cost of live in Deutschland. I think about live in Österreich or in Switzerland..
austria and switzerland are both not germany, by definition 👀
cheap cost of living depends a lot on where you go
are you renting out your apartment ?
on some appartment site theres appartments and it says for pets, by arrangement, what does that mean?
like some say yes no and by arrangement
does it mean they have to approve which pet i get
or i have to pay extra
because i'd like to get a rat or hamster
that you have to tell them in advance and see what they tell you
they're probably ok with things like a hamster, it might be harder with potentially noisy little buggers like cats or those atrocious small dogs that do nothing but bark all day
yes, there are a few well know websites that have good drafts (Vorlage)
yeah i dont rly like dogs n no space for them
id like a cat but rn a small animal would do best
we have bunnies and guinea pigs and we just had to inform the Hausmeister prior to bringing them in
they allow larger animals like cats but only after you've lived there a few months and have informed the property management, i imagine its similar elsewhere
but yeah best to ask for more details
yeah will they charge u cause in the uk if u have pets the owner wants like 100£ per pet
house owner*
depends on the place, luckily not for us
that's not a thing in germany afaik. Never heard of extra fees for pets
charging for smaller animals is dumb anyway because a bunny cant cause irreparable damage to the place like a cat or dog lol
ahh ok so by arrangement is like yeah and no to some pets
like yeah a small pet but not some massive dog
it would be challenging for a cat to cause irreparable damage
essentially, either some pets allowed, or pets only allowed after a certain time of living there, maybe mix of both
to the furniture sure i guess but that's got nothing to do with the landlord
@tight kelp can you post/dm me one of those websites? I just want to read in advance so i will know a thing or two before actaully having a real contract
i don't really remember tbh. Maybe wg-suche
they're websites to find (long-term) accommodation anyway. You can find them pretty easily by googling
@tight kelp uhm i do not search for offers but a documents drafts so i can try to translate them now so that i wont be screwed over by some bad contract
Holy Molly, so make a Master in Germany is do complicated...
@high lodge https://www.mieterbund.de/service/mietvertrag.html
I found this site which has a German as well as english Version. If you want to look at more drafts, search for: Mietvertrag Vorlage
the same sites that have the offers have contract drafts
i try to find it here https://www.immowelt.at/liste/graz/wohnungen/mieten?inaccessibleexpose=1
Graz, Wohnung mieten in Graz.
but kinda... cant
@exotic barn thx a lot
is there any sites to see apartments? like immobilienscout but different
since idk if all are shown on there
I used imoscout just beware of scams
i used wg-gesucht.de
its just an appartment not a wg :c
yeah wg gesucht is also only for certain cities
also
whats the difference between these internet boxes: EasyBox 804, FRITZ! Box 7530, FRITZ! Box 7590
like u need to buy one if u want internet
how do u know if its a scam or not?
anything or anyone who claims to be from Airbnb on there is a scam, my gf and I actually lost quite a bit of money to one of those listings unfortunately
imo its always best to rent through an actual property management agency anyway
ahh just because there is 3 prices the in ascending order but all is the same? overall or does it have a certain bandwidth one box can have like if i get internet of 100mb download, would the cheaper one be able to handle it
man why is my language school open despite all other schools being closed???
@wise obsidian is your vhs school open?
no, they emailed last night to say it's closed until at least the 31st
Does anyone know approximately what the monthly costs for a (student) car owner in Germany are? including car insurance, gas, parking, etc..
depends highly on the car
smaller the car, cheaper the road tax/insurance is
if it uses LPG then fuel can be quite cheap
i heard there are many incentives for electric cars and there was a record high of adoption in germany in 2020 so if there are affordable ones do look up if that may be cheaper (probably not yet)
Wow why is mine open that use the excuse it's a language school but clearly it's not just that
state-run schools must close during lockdown, but i don't know about other institutions; they may have a choice
Do you happen to have an estimate for a small (used) car?
well you can get a beater for under 1000 euros but something will inevitably be wrong with it
so it helps to either be mechanically inclined yourself or know someone who can help
a lot of stuff you can fix on your own tbh you just need the parts, youtube tutorials are quite helpful
I've heard you can get help from people who know their way around cars, at least enough to not need to pay the price of the car in repairs. They can assess it for you and give you a recommendation.
I switched doctors and got my regular prescriptions from her, and she spelled my surname wrong (added one letter in a very common German way). I didn't notice until I'd already filled the prescriptions (they're not controlled substances or anything so the pharmacy didn't check my ID or anything) and I'm worried about this causing trouble with my insurance.
Would it be better or worse for this situation for me to cross out the offending letter, or should I leave it as-is and pray my insurance is kind?
mines a CJD school/ JMD
If I saw an emergency in Germany, Austria, or anywhere else in Europe that uses 112, can I speak to 112 in English?
i feel the experience is going to vary by country but yes, they are required to know english to work as operators afaik
Thanks.
I should've been clearer though.. I wanted to know if you knew what the monthly expenses of owning a small car would be like, since you said it depends on size
I don't think it will be a problem since the prescription will have other identifying info like your insurance number. But then again I'm not sure. You should contact your insurance just to be on the safe side. A lot of them have live chats on their websites to give u quick responses
I'm privately insured with a weird policy, so no number, but my insurance is reachable by email and I can't believe I didn't think to do that
thanks for the advice lol!
Danke. That answered my question.
Really is hard to studying in Germany like an Auslander?
I cant believe that make Master in Germany is impossible 😦
@exotic barn
Insurance price depends on the car, driver, and bunch of other factors, like where it is commonly parked, average yearly mileage and so on
Try with check24 and deepl translator, they ask a million questions, I decided I have no clue what are some things so I picked good agent nearby with google reviews and we did it all in one place (we had hausrat with them, since that one was easy to choose online, so we did / transfered others as well, we had some done in other institutions made for us by agents when relocating)
Mazda mx5, 10 years old, 2.0l motor, 118kw
Driver more than 23 year old, class sf8 (that means 8 years without insurance claim, schaden frei, can be transferred between eu states with documentation, and supposedly it is 30% discount)
New and/or young drivers pay more
haftpflicht is 20 eur (for damage up to 150 million euros, per person 15 million)
Teilkasko with 150 eur participating, is 8.50 eur
Unfallschaden (so if something happens to you up to 25 thousand for death, 50 for disability) is 2.5
So, total recommended minimum is 22.5, for obligatory and unfall
With axa, where we also did hausrat (including glass) and Privathaftpflicht, 12.5 + 5.5 + 5.5
And motorcycle for which I don't have details around, but it's with full kasko included, total cost is 56.5, same driver, but I think sf is now 0, I think it goes per vehicle category type, it's a new vehicle and a new A licence
Eg, we got some discounts, but on what, no clue anymore, maybe on everything. That's why I'm sharing all numbers, so that you can compare.
I think hausrat and haftpflicht are like 10 eur lower than we paid previously, and car is second vehicle so there's some discount as well.
Thank you for the detailed info. Much appreciated.
So i have a question. If i want to rent some apartment for living, how can I avoid or be sure that landlord wont come in just because (or during long period of my absence in given place, like for example vacation trip) ?
The landlord doesn't have a right to have a key.
?
