Never knew this.... It seems like this trend of doing masters abroad exists in most countries
academia wants you to go to different places for some reason
I don’t really wanna leave my uni but if I wanna stay in academia eventually I’ll have to I guess
note that idk if I’m gonna even do that
Academia as in... Going for a phd?,
among other things
doesn’t stop there
necessarily
but like
bachelor’s first
then master’s
then teaching diploma
and then we’ll see
That sounds overwhelming when u put it that way😤
Bachelor’s
yes
I thought it will be smooth sailimg after A levels
bachelor’s degree
Boy was i wrong
I mean, imo university is just way more fun than high school
Depends xD
Ye I guess it would be
provided you study sth you enjoy of course
I mean it’s also way more work
I won’t deny that
Well anyways, do you perhaps know of any?
but I actually care about it
At the moment cant decide between going for a uni or Fh in germany....
Well thats what i thought... at uni i finally stidy only the stuff im interested in.
HA
Hope fh's are fun
for me that’s actually mostly the case so I’m happy :P
that’s not necessarily a bad thing imo
even if you won’t need it, having learned it once broadens your view of things anyway
and learning itself is something to practice
Sascha is lucky he enjoys maths so much.... My mood swings a lot regarding maths
Its annoying and unnecessary
I’ve figured out more or less what I wanna do in my third year now too, yay
Btw vitus... Isnt that also one of the reasons people dodge unis and opt for fh's...
As a future teacher i wanna learn how to teach relevant school material, not pretend im an oecd representative at a european climate conference and present someone elses powerpoint
Cuz of the useless theory?
Uhm... uni and fh just teach different things for different professions
I couldnt become a teacher at an fh
And you couldnt become a specified programmer at a uni
specified programmer?
Yea like for robotics etc
still unsure what that nomenclature means. Never heard it before
I know a few people in programming courses... theyre very specific about their field
I think i saw a hochschule in badwurtemburg where one could do EE and get a physics traching degree or something
Hochschule =/= Fachhochschule
programming doesn't necessarily require a degree though, it's different than teaching in that regard
Yep
Hence why uni and fh are two completely different things
(At least in austria
)
So hochschules are jus ....... In the middle?
May I ask what fh is?
FH=Fachhochschule
Fachhodchules..... Where studies are.more practical oriented
A hochschule is more uni like
Ahhh, is it equivalent to uni?
does germany have a rigoros difference between hochschule and uni?
cause here it’s just, the Universitäten are cantonal
and the Hochschulen are not
Like for becoming a teacher im at a Pädagogische Hochschule, but i could also go to a uni (and i actually did until recently)
(e.g. ETH is federal)
Idk how administration works
I think there is...... Unis are on one side...... And fachhochschules have the practical oriented studies..... The recent Hochschules ..... AFAIK and NOT SURE.......were called FH earlier and now have got a name change to HH
I think it has something to do with the bologna process
Tslkimg about germany btw
Are the courses taught in English?
Hm yeah, as I’ve noticed bachelor’s degree courses are rarely taught in English
and also not in germany
Wasn’t it B2?
Is that because the courses are not taught in English?
I mean it doesn’t fit your criterion of being in germany anyway
unless WW3 has happened without me noticing
Wouldnt be surprising if switzerland didnt notice it 😛
However, I want to enter uni in Germany where courses are taught in English, at least for the first years
I can’t seem to find good universities that offer bachelor’s in English
What, really?
The german speaking area is very "behind" on that
I mean you could argue if its good or bad
But generally we like our native language 😛
(it’s good)
Switzerland during WW2 : "I don't care, I'm neutral"
I think its good too
switzerland post-1848*
Like in the NL dutch is almost being eliminated at their unis
Basically eradicating their native tongue from higher education
and in 100 years they’re complaining that dutch is actually dying
why does 1848 sounds like an important date to me...?
But in vienna you can study Nederlandistik
bunch of countries tried to get a constitution going, switzetland succeded
germany and italy both also had such ideas
@worldly whale cos revolution?
France also, but failed miserably
¯_(ツ)_/¯
1848 is the year when Napoleon III of France was elected President... But then he decided to keep the power in 1852 by making him emperor until 1870 when he lost the war against the Prussian armies.
It's funny to see that France and Germany couldn't get along at all for a hundred years
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Anyway... I was wondering... how is University in Germany? 🤔
how in what sense
like, how does it work for the class, etc.
one thing that is often said of german uni is that, compared to other countries, it gives more freedom but also more burden on the student to research and learn stuff on their own, as opposed to being "handholded" by lectures
Does TUM only offer bachelor’s courses in german? I’ve read that this is true, however I’ve also been told that there are English courses?
Not for bachelor’s?
Nah
On the daad website u can add a "english" only filter i think
And look at the unis.
you definitely can
hello, I have a visa question
is it possible to change your student visa into student application visa while in Germany?
do hochschule masters usually last 3 semesters?
2 years is usual (3 semesters + 1 for writing your thesis)
but i think it can extend though...... idk if for masters people usually complete it within the recommended time
3 semesters mean I shouldn’t apply there?😄@hidden briar
Hey, I am a Dane and want to study an IT bachelor in Munich (been looking at TUM and MUAS), it seems all of them are in German, so I would have to take a German proficiency test, which do you recommend and is cheap? I am a beginner at German atm, but I want to make an effort into learning the language so I can study there, my girlfriend moves there for work and I want to move in with her. I considered working there while preparing for the German test. What are your thoughts?
It's definitely manageable but depending on your time frame can be made either easier or harder
tests that are usually recognised by all unis are TestDAF, DSH, and those by Goethe Institut
Okay, it doesn’t really matter which one I take? None of them you can recommend specifically
i only personally sat TestDAF. They vary in cost and difficulty, but also in the sort of results they give
testdaf for example gives you a result independent of CEFR levels, and there's only one version of the test, whose results determine your general proficiency in each of speaking, listening, writing and reading
You might want to check specifically with the uni as it's possible they might accept only a specific test. Well, not sure, but important to check it at least.
whereas others might have separate tests, with different pricing, for various levels
but yes what base says
Another consideration that's good to know: you generally have to go to a specific testing location for these kind of tests. You might have to pick one that's at a reasonable travelling distance or who's holding a test on a suitable date for you.
Yes, I would prefer it to be close to Munich, since that’s where I will live
Thanks for the advice 😄
Np. Good luck.
Until I will move there, I will have to self study. Do you have any recommendations for good material? Been using Duolingo for a bit, but I find it very easy so far
Sure. My recommendation is to make sure to get at least one study task covering each skill. Generally this includes grammar, vocab, reading, writing, speaking and listening. You can balance that however you want. Most of those you can do pretty easily, just using this discord and YouTube and stuff. Grammar is usually the tricky one for people.
For that you can find out what topics you don't know yet (there are lists of grammar topics in the resource list or you can use >ex beginner in #botchannel if you're a total beginner) and then Google it or ask here. You can pick up any half-decent textbook. I really encourage doing worksheets (also in the resource list). There's also a good beginner book Basic German in the resource list you can use if you want.
German has such a huge amount of resources that you don't really need to get one particular source. You can just google anything whenever you want to know about it, and look at multiple sources.
Ah, cool I really appreciate it ☺ will check it out
And if you're looking for a source for a specific topic sometime, feel free to ask in #questions like "Where can I read about prepositions?" or whatever. Way easier to give recommendations on material per question rather than just overall.
Yeah, I see 😄 thanks man
Hi, I need to ask something. I need to find an Apartment but, I can't find a cheap one. Have anybody advices? (Websites or an Agency or something else)
@crimson yew a good app or website is "Airbnb ".
@mystic anvil Isn't it just for a short time period ?
i don't know , man
maybe you can buy a cheap Apartment for a long time, from " Booking.com " .
@crimson yew maybe specifying the city/ town in which you are apartment hunting help people answer you.
@tame forum I search around Bochum. An apartment which cost max. 350€. I'll be a student in RUB. But, Apartments in close distances are OK.
hmm i dont live in Deutschland, sorry for giving you the misunderstanding, i merely gave the tip so u can perhaps get more specific answers,
including utilities and whatnot, you can't find a place in bochum for that price
except if you share it with someone. You can look for WG, Wohngemeinschaften; there are websites for that that you can find by simply googling the word.
advice on how to book a room for a day or two in Dresden?
im planning to take the goethe institute test in Dresden next may
What kind of advice do you need?
what sort of website should I use
and what is the procedure?
I have never done this before by the way 😅
Just google Dresden Germany hotels. Or look on airbnb or something similar.
and how does the payment work?
do I pay them and they ship me a ticket or something similar?
You can usually pay online with a credit or debit card or paypal and they email you the details.
I've never stated in Germany though so I don't know specifics.
do I print out the details usually?
It's a good idea to do it just in case. But usually you can just show ID or something and they check it on their computer.
you can use booking.com
they require sometimes your card to make a reservation
and you recieve your booking PIN and reservation info on your e-mail and your app
hmm okay, thanks guys!
Osterlamm ftw
Flying to Germany in 2 days. I bought a ticket for Frankfurt to Berlin with 2 connections. One of which is a 5-minute window. I wasn't attentive and did not notice how small that window is... How long do trains wait around from their arrival times?
If you can do an online check-in you can run and they'll wait for you for a time. It's not particularly polite but it works
@faint plaza Danke, I'll prepare to run then 😛
Yeah would be good 😂
@tight kelp Wow, they'll wait for one particular person because they checked in?
Guess it would be very unlikely that the first train I take would arrive late, causing me to miss the second one?
I'm too used to trains from my city, where 10-15 minutes late is actually pretty good 😛
well, that's how check-in works
i don't know whether there are fines or anything though. You should probably call them to ask them how much time they'll wait and stuff
german trains can definitely be late btw 👀
but in my experience, despite the natives complaining about them often, they're much more reliable than my home country
Interesting, I was confused to wtf checking in did. Figured it just spared the attendent from finding you for the ticket? Well... I'll hope for stereotypical German punctuality when arriving to Erfurt Hbf 😛
@tight kelp schonmal s Bahn gefahren? Da sind Züge ein Witz gegen
Are the ICE Bahn reliable time-wise, generally?
Excellent. Hey, thanks again! 0233 here so I'm off to sleep.
0935 here same for now :^)
the stereotypical punctuality is actually swiss
Oh yeah, some girl from Switzerland who is at my uni told me the transport there is always 100% punctual.
I was like wtf
Yeah the Swiss have this general attitude of never leaving a few minute windows for things
Simply because they never have to lmao
Swiss ppl r blessed.
Weiss jemand, wo man in Berlin deutsche Tastaturaufkleber kauft?
How do you change to US int btw?
I have it on my main PC but I cant seem to find it on my other one
theres only US standard
See if you can select the language US and then open settings/options for that language.
And then you should be able to add extra keyboards.
wtf
why did they hide it like that
at least make the button visible without me clicking on the thing first
Yeah, agreed.
and why is there an advanced keyboard settings when this option is not included there
Because it was made by dummies.
But anyway thanks a lot
😒
Saget mir, oh weise Leuts
Ice is immer lustig
dann liegt Düsseldorf in Schottland ^^
How different? If you will get any official paper about the name change it would help in any case
Normally, 1 letter shouldn't be a problem. However, it depends on the officer who checks it etc
I wish I could be more help
tbh, you'd contact the embassy
Contact them
If they can send you something all gonna be OK
Gern geschehen!
Oh ya i keep forgetting switzerland isnt in EU
Also entweder B2 oder c1
what do you need the help for exactly? to determine whether ur c1 or B2?
Deciding which test to do
ohh
And where I will do it
afaik goethe tests occur way way more frequently in my country...might depend from country to country
When do you need it and what do you want to use it for?
Id prefer c1 but i need more time. If I can't do it in England then
and geothe tests are modular (if u fail a module u dont have to do the entire test again)
I don't need it for anything I jusy want a German proficiency to put on my cv
i am not sure if testdaf has this facility
I can do B2 like now
And I live in Vienna
So I can do it here
But id prefer c1 since its higher niveau
for me goethe is the one since
- takes place every month/ compared to twice a year with test daf
- results are released in a week with goethe compared to 1.5 months with testdaf
- results are valid for life with goethe and i think this applies for testdaf too
- for me its a location thing too....... 30 mins drive< 2 hr drive to give testdaf
Sure. But is there any benefit to C1 over B2 for job searching? That's the main thing to consider I think. If there's no benefit, may as well get it now.
Nop don't think so but I'll be taking my c1.2 course next month so I'll have learned all the Grammatik
Just gotta learn words and read and vocab and whatnot
why not do both?
then i would suggest doing B2
Base hat aber recht
What
i meant if you really want the C1..... u could do it in the next month or the month after
My point is
If i do B2 and then c1, c1 trumps B2
It also depends on if I can do the tests in England and when the tests are
So uh
My teacher said Goethe and telc are internationally known so Id better do one of those mmlol
test daf is too....
the only difference is testdaf doesnt have the modules
one exam for everyone
but yah goethe and telc are more flexible so i would always opt for them
and btw people also say that goethe exams are easier than telcs
Btw isla
A friend of mine who's studying with me took c1 Goethe and he has B2 at best
Seems to be easy
one actually can't fail just DHS but simply get results between B2 and C1, while with Goethe if you're not good enough in some part like Listening then you fail and don't get any certificate. Am I right?
dont know about DHS , but goethe works like that.
@undone gyro I did DSD II. But you dont need to do Goethe C2 if you need it just for your CV.
Goethe C1 sounds cool enough already
i would suggest Goethe if ur unsure..... on the account of them being easier.
yeah
unsure if you are really C1 , that is.
one actually can't fail just DHS but simply get results between B2 and C1
Wrong, <56% is fail @steel mauve
sounded too good to be true
Bitte
@lime stone: This message was redirected here from #questions:
Is it true that in Switzerland you can write off part of your rent if you're freelance/use a room in your place as an office?
yeh..
I cannot confirm this, but it sounds plausible enough. You can write off a lot of things, e.g. I can write off my public transport fees to commute between home and school on weekends
Thats cool as hell of switzerland to do that
tbf my yearly taxes so far have been 0
might change this year tho as I actually have a non-negligible salary
Mhm, I think it's quite common to allow the writing off your 'home office'. I wonder how that works if you're renting with other people.
I presume if you got yourself a house, you'd work out proportionally the cost of the room for the office versus teh rest of the house
but if you've only technically renting a single room - what then? 😄
write up as much as you dare, the worst they can do is complain :P
(okay, that’s not quite true but more or less how we handle taxes)
(like, public transport? just write up how much it’d cost to come home every week even if you don’t)
Wait, if you work FROM HOME - you'd still write up cost for "commuting" ?
my personal situation is this that my official home is about two hours away by public transport and I go there on weekends, staying in Zürich under the week
in addition, I need to pay for public transport within Zürich
under -> throughout the week
merely perfecting your perfect english.
cause like, you’re not actually commuting are you
Yes, I'd just be home... nowhere to travel
you don’t need transport to get from and to work
taxi from bedroom to living room
basically my understanding is that you can get things deducted quite commonly if you need them to work or study
So, PC cost, internet, office space within the flat, etc. All could be deducted?
hah
I’m just trying to think what sorts of fields there were on my last tax report
but I didn’t get to see half the pages in the first place cause they were conditional on other information
Fair enough. I'll try to figure this shit out.
Danke, Saʃʃa :) Mein Bekannter ist aus Moldawien :/
If you apply for the bachelor than yes I would say
Is tomorrow a public holiday?
Ja, Karfreitag
In austria it just got cancelled this year because only protestants could take the day off
A catholic claimed discrimination at the european court and got right
Last minute ostergeschenke, deko, schokolade etc
Hey hey, could somebody give me tips on how to rent a flat in Vienna, what to take into consideration, what to pay attention to? More specifically: renting a flat as a student. Even more specifically: starting a WG of at least 3 people.
@sick imp @hard parcel @kindred finch @pale saddle pinging you biggest wieners for help, thanks!
I've never rented a flat here D: the only advice I can give is that you should try to get something close to a U-Bahn Station, or at least Bus/tram
@hard parcel but your parents did, ne? 👀
No they bought one
I'll ask my roommates suzu
They also have flats available
They offered me one and I'm not sure if it's in the time range you're looking for but we can work something out
Sounds great heckie! Even if it doesn’t fit, could you also ask them if they know anybody wanting to rent a flat too?
@fleet pelican
Damn the connections 😻
Hecke already knows people who know the people 👌
hecke IS the people

dachte is one of the verbs that are commonly used with präteritum
hat dachte is not a thing though ;)
oh didnt see the hat
smh I need a Führungszeugnis for my new uni job, but I can't sign up for one online because I don't have the e-Aufenthaltstitel, and my local Bürgeramt doesn't have any appointments available until June (I'm supposed to start work beginning of may). Does anybody know if there's another way to apply for this, like by letter or something? I tried looking around service.berlin.de but my German's pretty bad so it's been hard to find useful info
i did that by just going to the bürgeramt without an appointment
it takes just a few seconds, though of course it depends on your local office
i say seconds, i mean minutes
my local office's page for its hours says "nur mit Termin*"but then links to "(*) einige Dienstleistungen erfordern keinen Termin. Achten Sie auf die Hinweise unter "Zuständige Behörden" bei der jeweiligen Dienstleistung oder informieren Sie sich auf unserer Homepage."
smh
"only with appointment except when it isn't"
if it isn't too troublesome i suggest just going there in person ¯_(ツ)_/¯
and even if it is, it might still be worth it compared to waiting till june
yeah I think my prospective employer might get a little irritated if I did that lol
well tbh it's kinda their fault for requiring stuff like that when it's far from unlikely that institutions will take a lot to process bureaucracy
surely they can't expect people who apply for jobs require a führungszeugnis every few weeks (because that's the validity they require), since it costs money to file requests for them and time for them to be mailed
also, most jobs who require them should have no right to refuse the job even if one doesn't have perfectly clean conduct, but that's a different matter I suppose
I mean they also asked for copies of my certified diplomas despite the fact that it's a job for the university and I've already submitted said diplomas to the university twice so I just kinda assumed that was just how germans roll
yeah it's pretty classic
I've also only been here 7 months like tbh I'd be impressed if I managed to not have a clean Führungszeugnis in so little time
you'd be surprised. Also, I don't know whether they coordinate with foreign states to determine that stuff; if they do, it's possible one could arrive with a dirty one from the start
they coordinate with other EU states, but I'm from the US 😎
they're two different things. The Versichertennummer is internal to your Krankenkasse, the Sozialversicherungsnummer corresponds to your person regardless of other factors.
hey, there's someone who often calls me back to answer the emails I send. What could be a good, polite way of letting him know he can just answer with an email?
"Sie können(/dürfen?) bequem per Email antworten" sounds off and a bit too forceful. And I also can't think of a better term than bequem or angenehm, which sound unsuited
anyone? :<
I'd help but frankly I don't even know how to word that politely in English
Maybe you could add something to your email signature along the lines of "due to (reason), during (time period) I prefer to be reached by email," and therefore without directly telling the person, you're still telling them
@tight kelp thanks for the info about the numbers too
i ended up sending the email without that part
they're still to respond, i think they're in urlaub 😬
Well, maybe they'll just email this time. :)
at this point i don't really care, so long as they answer xD
i gotta know for a school thing: what's the difference between bavarian mittelschule, realschule, and gymnasium?
anytime
lieferando hat lieferheld übernommen 😬
Mies :^(
@tight kelp I'm a bit late but I'd have used something like "einfach" instead of "bequem"
Bequem is more like uhh... conveniently in this case
Ikr
But doesn't einfach sound a bit condescending?
Like I'm calling them out for not using emails
Hmm
@faint plaza speaking of Bargeld, i need to show you something at home
Okey lol
An meinem uni campus ebenso
Hallo
Ja Deutschland ist was das angeht ja besonders schlimm
@fleet pelican also was war mit Bargeld?
OIU SAID IT DIDNT WORK LOL
didnt* not wont 😔

Uh, what is the equivalent of 'gumtree' in Switzerland? I know of anibis.ch is there anything else?
What is gumtree
sounds soemthing straight out of Lorax
what is Lorax
Any german lawstudents here?
has anyone ever had something delivered by IKEA? In the order they state "Zeit: 14:00 - 21:00" but the place they should deliver to isn't where i'm currently living, I can't be expected to sit there (on the ground, there's no chair until they deliver them lol) for seven hours waiting for them. Will they call in advance before delivering?
get urself a chair and sit
sebis paradox
If it’s a Spedition they usually called me before they arrived @tight kelp
in my experience they do call as long as you're getting a proper delivery rather than just DHL
they also give you a more exact window day-of iirc?
Usually, the delivery service will call ahead if they have access to a phone number. Were you able to solve your problem? @tight kelp If not, let me know. I work for IKEA so I might be able to help.
thank you all
@fathom quiver we'll see today. They're supposed to be there by 14 to 21 o'clock but that's a bit too big a window. How much in advance do they usually call? I need to have time to take the underground
by the way, yesterday I was fuming. They were supposed to come and measure the kitchen (window: 12 to 16 o'clock) and nobody called nor showed up. I wasted my whole afternoon sitting on my arse so I wonder what happened
they emailed me day-of in the morning with a like two-hour window, and then called 15 minutes in advance for me
I suppose that's better than nothing :D But I haven't gotten any email yet and the delivery is today
@tight kelp Unfortunately, because IKEA uses independent delivery services, it can depend. Typically we recommend a call about 1-2 hours before delivery, but some companies have only given a 30 minute notice in the past. As for yesterday, they should have notified you if someone wasn't able to do your kitchen measuring that day. There is no excuse for them wasting your time. Unfortunately IKEA is severely lagging behind when it comes to technology and service and the result is poor customer service more often than should be expected. I hope everything goes much better today.
yeah, hopefully :P Thanks for the info
in retrospect, your nickname sounds quite appropriate
lol
Ugh. They didn't call until they were already there and so I had to rush to the other side of the bloody city. With the ubahn.
lol

Hmm
How to buy glasses the cheapest way?
I have an Augenärztliche Verordnung, but I don't want to pay ~100 euros for a Fassung uwu
was about to say ikea before i read the second message
you can ask your insurance whether/what they cover
They cover lenses
Well you will have to pay that money actually
i think i had seen a website that makes glasses and sends them to you and was quite cheap,
They don’t cover Fassungen
can't remember the name nor how much it costs
I know but are there any cheap stores
I would go with Fielmann
but i think you should be able to find somethign for less than 100
My dad always goes there and tells me it is cheap
always
how many eyes does he have
Thanks!
hey it's me with adult questions again
does anyone have experience or knowledge about credit cards in germany? It's hard to evaluate options because I have a feeling I'm missing important stuff. Right now what I check is:
- Yearly costs
- Interest rates for Teilzahlungen – i only plan to use it to pay for big stuff in smaller chunks
- Conditions for cancelling
and i also have no clear idea of what interest rates i should consider good or bad. So far I've seen stuff ranging from 8.90% (conditional) to over 15%
Maybe 1/3 of Germans have credit cards, I don't. No idea what is a good offer
well i'm waiting for that 1/3 then ;) And others who live in germany and have one, who don't have to be german necessarily
debit card linked to your checking account
yep, ec-karte
i was jus thinking about this today...... about lasik
And? What do you think?
I haven't done any research or googling yet, just recalled I promised my mom to do so
But my Augenarzt said that it would cost about 4500-5000€ which is utterly expensive
So idk
depends on lots of stuff...... firstly i think from what i had read..... its better to get Lasik when ur 19/20 or later because your eyes stop developing then...... and if your numbers have increased in the last year.... the doctor wont do it
however again i aint a professional doctor or anything.....maybe these things might not apply individually to you if the doctor decides.
i had also read that the numbers i think have to be in a certain range.
so better to book a consultation and discuss the risks with him too.
obv loads of websites related to this topic too on google who can perhaps give more insight
Yeah my doctor told me that if I wanna do an operation, I'd have to go through a bunch of screenings
I have -9 for both eyes and I'm almost 20 so it's actually the best time to do it
👀
damn
but for something like my eyes... idk if i would cheap out
True..
@odd bison I'm interested in this too, just let me know if you find out any new info about it ^^
Keep in mind that if you have a steady enough source of income you can ask a bank for credit to pay for the operation. It's what I would do if I didn't have important expenses coming up
how does one dispose of a broken drying rack? Can i just put it next to the yellow bin or...?
how big? would guess Sperrmüll.
is it made of metal or plastic
metal
Wertstoffhof/Schrottplatz then
is there an easy way to find the nearest one?
google "wertstoffhof <location>"
you could try Sperrmüll for that
otherwise, no
fair note: they dont like coming to pick up a single thing
well, i don't like walking around town with a bulky thing just to recycle it
yo, is anybody here familiar enough with psychotherapy to know what the difference between a heilpraktiker für psychotherapie and a psychologische psychotherapeut is? my translater says "heilpraktiker" means "alternative practitioner/naturopath" but I wanna doublecheck that it carries the same... connotations as the English before i dismiss it out of hand
yes its the same
gotcha
Ach so..... Süße pfp übrigens

original will most prolly get certified when you are phsysically present there
btw....
the uni MIGHT ask to get the copies attested in a consulate or something
that obv only the uni can confirm for u
yah thats why u shud always call them
unis never reply with email...... or even when they do they take a lot of tie
*time
that happened to me too lol
never considered calling until i suddenly did
as in i realised i could jus friggin call them.... and even then the people necessary came like only for 4 hours in the ENTIRE week
there was a narrow time period when i could call them..... and even then sometimes noone would pick up.....but still way faster than email
most of the times someone would pick up the call when you are told which time to call at
even though its a bit tedious..... i think it might depend from uni to uni..... smaller hochschules are way faster ...... maybe other unis are better at stuff like this....... this was my experience with only one Uni
but for the Emails thing i can agree...... noone replies
thanks lol
as in they do but take time and i am impatient😩
Never had a german uni not reply to my email but i guess you gotta find the email of the person responsible for whatever you need

Wenn du EU-Bürger bist, nichts. Wohnung und Arbeitsplatz helfen
Hmm Sweet Danke
90 Tage du kannst ohne Probleme bleiben, dann musst du dich anmelden

Idk anything about your problem but I suggest you ask in English.
@autumn monolith
fair enough
I have a study contract and all that for a school in germany, but I have issues with getting a visa too late due to the earliest appointment being 1.5 months prior to the start of the winter semester. If anyone has experience with getting a visa (as an american) for studying in germany, I'd love to pm and ask some questions/get info or advice
@humble bough ^
Okay so
lemme switch to my real keyboard and I'll help
alrighty
As a US citizen, you do not need to get a visa (Visum) before you go to Germany. The US and Germany have a visa-free agreement, so you can fly there and stay up to 3 months no problem. What you will need to study in Germany is a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel). Some people call residence permits visas in English to try and simplify things, but they work differently so I generally don't think that's a good idea.
You also don't need to get your residence permit before you start classes for the semester; you just need to get it before your visa-free period of 90 days is up.
I can attest to this myself -- I arrived in Germany in late September 2018, started classes in October, and didn't get my residence permit until early December (I kinda waited until the last minute).
The more important thing to do wrt legally staying in Germany is finding a place to live where you can register, as you need a valid Anmeldung both for the residence permit and, at least in my case, to enroll in university.
Also, if you've already got a study contract, DEFINITELY contact the international office at your German uni; they're generally very helpful at least when it comes to university paperwork.
@autumn monolith hope this was helpful! feel free to PM me if you have further questions
Thank you a ton, this does help alleviate some stress and is some very helpful info
don't worry, now you can stress about finding an apartment like the rest of us 😄
hi guys! i'm new here and i'm doing a project on germany from 2005-2055 for my ap class and i was wondering if anyone can help me out on the current political climate in germany. just feel free to ping me or anything if you have the time. thanks!
Hi does anyone here uses lycamobile prepaid? I have an urgent question regarding it. The guy at the store i bought my 28day prepaid from lied to me at the start when i asked if the expiry date can be extended via top up when it comes around, he said ya. Today the same guy told me it cant be extended and i need to get a new one. Is this true?
Nvm managed to find another store just before closing time which explained how the system works. Lyca sim has to expire first before you can purchase a new plan if you want the same number. Data doesnt rollover.
It does 🤔
lol
Why do you ask?
We don't really allow this kind of political discussion except in #german-only
But if you have some specific reason for asking, feel free to explain it.
its for my AP European history project, i gotta do a timeline of germany from 2005-2055
i tried finding research material for it, but it was rrly vague :(
and most were either der spiegel or in german
Hmm. Well this kind of question is really tough to answer. They're just a political party and you are probably going to get more info from things like polls and other media, rather than a random German learning discord server.
Like are you here to learn or just to research for your project?
research for my project
Then I'm sorry but I think you've misunderstood the point of this server. It's not a German culture server. It's purely for people learning German.
oh shoot
But if you want to speak about politics, you can do so in #german-only , but you have to speak German there.
well, thanks for telling me that now, b/c the previous dude j-
ill do my best w/ just searching about it in previous chats or something ig. well thanks for helping me

okay so I'm pretty sure I am registered to vote in Köln but since I would've received the letter at my old address I never got it. It's apparently possible to vote without the polling card as long as I bring ID but idk where my polling location is since it was on the letter. Where would I find out?

thanks appreciate it. guessing that means it doesn't matter which rathaus as long as it's the correct city then? @faint plaza
Also fuck now I have to research the candidates before then
Hello
Does anyone know this university?
Anyone have advice on getting a residence permit?
I've tried for weeks to sign up for an appointment through their site, but none of them got confirmed and the next open dates are past the 90 day period for me
Can I just go to the office and hope for some walk-in hours or something?
Yes you can
They won't kick me out for not having set up an appointment? That's good to hear.
Usually they'll try to accommodate for it as best as possible

the website has a website?
what are u guys talking about? its jus "eu" written
your government website has shrek on its website?
ohhkkk
Any Americans studying in Leipzig in this server?
@tame forum i put that shrek
ohhhhh
man i was thinking EU was the coolest ever
.
maybe its u that is the coolest then.
but i can understand that it can be weird for older voters to see an animated green ogre on their voting scrren
ahahahaha. idk y this is so funny
"fließend in Wort und Schrift" is it ok if i write this while having C1, or should i write something else in this case?
it is
fluent is a vague term somewhere between B2 and C1, depending on whom you ask, but it always includes C1 at the very least
Hi, any „financial grown ups“ here that I can talk to? I am aware the whole IANAL or IANAFinanzberater or IANASteuerberater stuff, but I just want to ask a few tips on how you guys have started investing in Germany, and how‘ve you been calculating the taxes to go with it...bonus points if you‘ve the same BG as me! Blue Card holder, festangestellt and not from the US.
PMs are open! Thanks!
Sprachklasse, Profil: Fremdsprachen, Fachrichtung: Fremdsprachen? Ich brauche das fuer eine CV.
Sprachklasse sounds good
🤷🏼♂️
i think most prolly the person is inquiring about uni studies. and btw @unique sequoia it depends on the course you take and the university you go to. you cant jus classify all the unis in a country as good or bad
so every youtube video that shows "FUNK" at the end of their video...... the revenue goes to "FUNK"?
and the creators get a fixed salary?
m talking about german videos btw
There is no revenue coming from FUNK videos since they are ad free
ah shit. i thought that was becoz of my addblocker😅 . so why dont they moentize them?
two reasons
- All state-funded media in germany generally strive to be as ad free as possible
- Turning on ads would mean also directly providing revenue for YouTube which might be controversial
fick Youtube.
Is there any chance of studying CS for a bachelor’s degree, without reaching B2/C1 (or basically having English as the language of instruction)
If you can find a uni which offers such a degree, yes.
What do you want to study?
Oh, CS, sorry, I didn't see that.
iirc TUM does some english courses for bachelors
but you'll have to factcheck that
Well they only have English programs for MSc, while for BSc it’s only like 2 programs
This is the only one I could find, aside from private unis: https://studium.hs-ulm.de/de/Seiten/Studiengang_CTS.aspx?SearchCategory=Bachelor;
oh same
Uni Ulm
btw why do private universities exist in germany?
when the public education is already free. who is their target audience exactly?
I don't get what public education being free has to do with it.
when locals have the option to study for free. why would they opt for paid education
is my point
I guess it depends. I don't know how it is specifically in Germany, but I can think of several reasons why someone could choose that.
Because you want to study something that’s not broadly covered by public universities. Like journalism for example.
Maybe the people can't get into a public uni, for example, or the private uni offers specialized education the public unis don't. Maybe there is also a factor of networking, where many rich people go to some private unis.
Or because your grades just aren’t good enough to be accepted for your major of choice at a public university.
ahhh
@tame forum @solemn bay thank you lots for the help!
hey. i will be moving to germany in about a year and im in doubt
should i go through ausbildung or just go to the university and work
what would you want to study?
computer science
a bachelor
i was looking also here
then go to uni, I think Ausbildungen are hard to hard come by and you generally need a good level of German
you need a good level for uni too
and my german level is close to cero
bachelors aren't taught in english
i need to learn in a year haha
you can get to a decent level in a year
are you sure? there must be some that are taught in English because some people at my work went to Uni here and their German is crap
what about ausbildung?
ausbildungen for it aren't hard to come by really, but not easy to get accepted for without a degree or at least some pratical experience
im a 22 yold , they told me its like highschool
i have 2 years of working experience
im currently working on fraunhofer chile
@sullen robin some are, yes. But the courses that are taught in english are usually masters, not bachelors
oh that might be it, now that you say that
well, in any case, you better get started on that German
if it's working experience in the field then you might even be able to find a job with it
yes i have...
though you'd have fewer chances since you'd have to settle for those select companies that hire without german requirements
but again, in a year you may be able to get to a good enough level to work at a company. With two years experience you don't necessarily need a german degree or ausbildung to find work in it
it might be. Depends on the impression you'll make on the people in charge
i was never asked for a certificate personally
strategy-wise, I'd point a lot on getting good pronunciation habits from the start: that tends to make up a big part of the first impression
you sound more competent if you sound closer to a native, even if your vocab is just sufficient and your sentences are not complex
i can't help on that since i'm a eu citizen: i don't have those requirements
not the visa ones at least. Not sure what you mean with the money part exactly
ah, yeah, chilean requirements
student visa requires me to have 8000 euros on a german bank account
but whatever
am i wasting my time doing an ausbildung?
thats the only thing that concerns me the most
and lastly, how can i start learning here? its a damn stupid question, but hell. getting advice from the experience is the best move...
if you have 2 years of relevant experience then i'd be inclined to say yes. An ausbildung's pay is very low and the workload is basically the same as an actual job, and since I reckon that by having experience you'd be set to find a job, it'd be a waste
for reference, i'm getting calls back from companies i spontaneously send my CV to, and I have a partial degree in an irrelevant field and no ausbildung, with no native-level ability of german, and sometimes I don't even bother sending cover letters
disclaimer though, i haven't gotten a job yet (though I'm confident that if i had a couple years experience in the field i'd have already found one), and that part about the ausbildung's workload is hearsay
as for how to start learning, you can check out >faq beginners and >faq resources in #botchannel
okay thanks ma man
and by the way
ive heard its hard for people from south america to go there and maintain their stance there
their stance?
i was told that an ausbildung would save me from that problem
getting your visa updated for example
well, do keep in mind that everything i say comes from someone who is a eu citizen and as such is never in danger of having to justify his presence in germany or being deported
ah, yes youre totally right
so don't automatically assume that what makes sense for me will be the same for you
why would it be?
if you find yourself without the documentation to be somewhere, you will be sent back to your country
it's how it works
the word for "sent back to one's own country" is deported ¯_(ツ)_/¯
yep
well, do keep in mind that everything i say comes from someone who is a eu citizen and as such is never in danger of having to justify his presence in germany or being forcibly sent back
i get passive-aggressive in the evening
well
i just found there are also bachelors of science in auchbildungs
so
well
gotta learn german now
thanks @tight kelp
have spaß
Hey hey, is there anybody not from austria who applied to an unrestricted program at TU Wien?
hey so, im from America and im trying to study in Baden-Württemberg so i can be close to my girlfriend, and ive been studying german for 8 months. how likely is it for me to be accepted into a university, and what would be the quickest path towards getting a job as a non-eu citizen? p.s. im 19 and i came to germany immediately after i graduated high school
what's your CEFR level and what uni would you like to go to
i dont know my CEFR level, but right now i am almost B2
that's your CEFR level then
ah ok
as for which uni, my girlfriend is studying in heidelberg, so probably heidelberg, but honestly ill take anywhere i can get to by train
im planning on taking C1, which will be over in september
How easy is it for an English speaker to get a job in Germany
i can't help for stuff related to visas or things that would be different for non-eu citizens but if you have an education comparable to what is needed to join a university all you need is to get it certified and apply to unis together with a language certificate that satisfies their requirements (which vary by uni but at generally B2 or C1)
@grand vigil depends on what you wanna work as
as for jobs, german is almost always a must-know, unless the company operates in english, which may or may not be rare depending on the field
I have experience in logistics, supply chain management and B2B sales
Logistics they even take you without any german knowledge.

At the airport Munich
Seriously?
Wait, what did they do? Was it an office job?
Logistics job
the quickest way to find a job would be to apply :P But if you want a safe route you can go through an Ausbildung, that pays badly and lasts a couple years but generally works as a good gateway into jobs
I'm an European citizen, aren't those open to Germans only
No lol
and yes, logistics has no or very low language reqs. By logistics what is meant would be stuff like Amazon or package couriers. Even private postal companies don't have very high requirements in terms of german
im non-EU, so im not allowed to just apply i think
Most jobs at the airport Munich in logistic are via timeworking companies
for ausbildungen though you need german
@worn fable yes you probably need a work permit, but i can't help with that unfortunately, since i'm a eu citizen
My main problem is accomodation, otherwise I'd take that shitty job for a while
some companies offer visa sponsorship but I don't know how much that's relevant for entry-level
finding accommodation initially is a nightmare
Some companies offer you a flat for a time where you share it with other people until you find something
what i did was find an airbnb that would be cheap for long term and use that to start off. I ended up staying there a couple years even, and only just moved into my first "real" rent
What do you do for work if you don't mind me asking
the airbnb accommodation was "converted" into a sub-rent
currently i'm looking for work, but i immigrated together with my husband
who found work as a postman
@grand vigil how good is your German?
It's a humble B1 in my honest opinion
I might know a hotel in Munich that takes people who speak german,English and other languages
Google for the Hotel:
Art Hotel München
And look if they have open positions
Was my old work place who even offered a room where you could live
Checked their website, no job listings
Gonna shoot them an e-mail, it would be great to find a place that would offer a place to stay
btw work in restaurants and the like should be rather easy to find with a low language level, but I'd advise against it because it's usually nightmarish
I come from a terrible country, I can't imagine it actually being a nightmare
Shoot them an email with ya complete stuff
Diplomats and everything you got
Big plus is if you speak Croatian or Serbian
The boss is one and he likes them
I don't, I do speak Spanish and Portuguese. Not sure if that would be an advantage
Alright, I will! Thanks
Sent an email. I'll keep you posted in case they get back to me. I'll also offer you a drink if I'm working in Germany in the future because of this
@worn fable things to consider:
You need 9k euros yearly locked in a back account as savings to study at a uni
You need to pay 1.5k per semester to study in BW
Students from third countries (including usa) have a limited amount of hours they’re allowed to work and that definitely won’t be enough to cover the costs
Depends on the studies but balancing uni and work is quite demanding, have you considered a Hochschule or an Ausbildung?
my parents help finance my language course, which costs about 390 euros per month
and i have not yet considered an ausbildung...
but honestly i would just be happy to have any job at all, to make my parents worry less
those are independent expenses
yah the 9K euros is just to LIVE.
Not sure the cost of things in BW, but this was my prospective budget for studying two years at Hamburg (in USD, but I believe youre American too so ill leave it be).
But this is on the extremely frugal side of a lot of things (very little meal expenses, the cheapest student housing, etc). Student dorms arent a given (huge waitlist for some), and you want a bit of cushion anyway for unforeseen expenses too.
@worn fable
Cant be much help for the living stuff here since I literally just got here, but if you got any questions on the planning side of things, I can help a bit with that. (At least from the US angle)
@fair talon does your university have tuition fees?
Yah, sadly
which uni is it and whats your programme if i may ask?
Tried a few public ones, none lined up with my Bachelor's curriculum (newer program so no real direct transitions for masters).
Ended up at Kühne Logistics University, getting a MSc in Management
hmm.... didnt know programms existed where the masters transition was tricky
Well, it was meant for a specific field of work 👀 (US State department type work)
Two months before I graduate
State department hiring freeze
For a year
(Well, freeze in some departments, slowdown in others)
damnn. i hope you didnt have any debt from that degree
I did, but I worked it off 👀
Fancy contract job at Apple let me pay it off and save for Deutschland
ahh Glad to know it worked out in the end
Anythings possible with enough overtime lol
@fair talon
thank you, this helps a lot! ill let you know how things work out for me, and thank you again
Fun trivia: For Americans, theres basically only two or so banks we can go with. So not much comparison shopping there 👀
Most wont open accounts with US citizens
wth why would they do that. considering so many people from america visit Germany
The US requires them to do almost twice as much paperwork (tax laws in the US are a deep well of nonsense for expats)
ohhh
Basically they have to report a bunch of stuff back to the US if they have accounts with US citizens. Think the law's aimed more at Swiss/Irish type shenanigans, but it applies to Germany too 👀 (cause we're totally using it as a tax haven)
Actually thinking of using the time before classes start to make a US guide to this stuff. Most of the stuff I found online theres weird exceptions for US folk
Maybe a youtube channel lol, get some ad revenue
lol most of the guides I've found have been geared at US expats, there's a wealth of info about moving to germany lol
also unrelated question -- I started a student job at my uni at the beginning of May and recently received an Entgeltbescheinigung with all the info about how much I'm getting this month etc. But I haven't actually gotten any of that money yet. Does anybody else who's worked such a job know how long I should expect to wait and if there might be something wrong? I don't want to make a fuss if this is just a normal delay but I also kiiiinda really need the money and don't wanna delay doing something if they need me to do something to get it
Normally your boss told ya when you will get the money approximately at the start of ya job.
If you not I guess you will get it around the 31/30 or 1/2 of a month
Ending or beginning
I normally geht my entgeltbescheinigung earlier than my money @humble bough
I only seemed to run into guides aimed at India 😅 maybe I just had bad luck?
So you get those as seperate documents in Germany? In the US, you get the pay stub with your pay check attached to it.
