What could they do? Suspend you for your handwriting?
i can understand that tbh
It might be bad, but not illegal
not suspend you, but just give you an F because its illegible
True lol
My handwriting is pretty illegible to some people and I still write my exams in cursive so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I do everything in cursive
My teachers don't do that
They're pretty nice about handwriting
maybe theyre just good at reading
Maybe, or maybe they don't want to fail a kid because he can't write his John Hancock well lol
I used a dictionary for that, you're welcome
if the gist is legible, it should be fine
john hancock?
Signature
signature is no problem lol
Lol signature makes way more sense
Yeah, but saying John Hancock makes you feel like you know what you're talking about
lol signature
oh yeah serki show us ur signature
I only know John Hancock from the movie Hancock tbh
How else can I fill in my hole of never ending depression? Big words and languages, exactly lol
i won't show my signature online, no
:(
heh, heh, heh
i raise the number of strokes after writing my normal name each day of the week
but it has been defined as "spatial", as in space. Which is an odd context for this word in English but not in Italian and it's hard to convey its meaning lol
so today you make 25 strokes?
it's a super fast squiggle
lol
4 total strokes, of which 2 are for the first letter
lol
and my full name has 15 letters so i'll let you imagine how the rest looks
lol
oh wait
i'll try to sign as serki and brzrkr now, hold my pencil
what the hell is that?
what the hell is what
2 strokes for 14 letters?
first thought you "poured" coffee on the paper
lol
guess what the third one says
berzi
indeed. Might be the most legible
ye lol
i like the serki one best
it looks systematical but when you try to read
i cannot say, seeing as it's basically one big blob of blur
it's just lines (at least from the camera perspective)
lol
from afar it doesn't look much different from what mine looked when i wrote in cursive
but mine's more irregular
i tried to find a sample but all i have is notes and schemes for stuff, which i do in small caps and sort of futuristic typesetting
futuristic typesetting owo
as in, the text is not always regular in its placement and direction
the "R" is "k"
cfr. futurism
lol
which is an artistic movement i actually dislike lul
no i mean like following the borders and edges of objects i drew, or being sideways/vertical etc
ah
according to my mum, i used to write text upside down as a kid if i had to show it to her, being on the other side of the table
ability which i most certainly did not retain
try doing it like the really old greeks, writing one line LTR and then the next one RTL with mirrored letters
@pallid kelp tru
that way the (trained) eye never has to "carriage return", it just keeps reading
ye
oh look at the timezone, it's time for the babies to sleep see you later
whats your timezone
moscow
ah
wait why is the national one different?
oh it was my laptop...
so it didn't get updated all the time, huh
spokonoj noci
...if i even remember correctly. And forgive the latin script
well nobody forces me to follow the english convention for transcribing cyrillic ;)
i do
either follow the german or the english convention
🐔 s 🔫
spokonoy nochi - spokonoj notschi
imperialist swine
noči
windows us intl doesn't have that diacritic unfortunately
as it was apparently designed by monkeys
rip
it also doesn't have macron, both of which are symbols i find myself needing
rip
@nocturne frost @sudden panther @celest robin serious question: what are the pros and cons of studying in vienna?
in your opinion
You always have a shitton of events going on, educational, cultral or otherwise
The Unis are just generally of a good quality
The city is great for students imo because of all the typical student venues you find, so if you're that kinda outgoing person its perfect
Transport is literally never late
For me personally I love that I can travel for 20 minutes and be somewhere with nature while also having the convenience of a city
From talking to foreigners they typically say that things go faster in vienna than most capital cities
Food is shit expensive but with a little effort and no fussiness over origin this can be overcome
I mean I think I already shared my opinion some time ago, didn't I? And I've never really been somewhere else for a longer period of time, so it's a bit hard for me to compare and tell the advantages/disadvantages. 😅
And since I basically live off my parents I don't really know much about food/accomodation costs etc.
Just tell me what you like about the life there, Lau lol
I get to take spanish classes 😍
Spanish
What are typical student venues?
things that I assume a student visits after uni with their mates lmao
theres a sizeable food/drinks scene
suzu, Idk, I literally stay inside all day and study lmfao
or go ot work
ask me when someone pays me to study lmfao
Informatiker Feier, Physiker Feier etc. never went there so no clue how it is but probs a good way for getting to know new people
I don’t mean for you to recommend me some places, I just literally have no idea what student venues are lol
am Anfang des Semesters?
is student venue just like Studentenfeier or what?
I meant like, bars, food places, clubs
where your typical student with friends goes
to blow the last of their student loan
Oh i see
im not your typical student im afraid so you gotta find someone else to tell you about bars lol
I’m too poor for that, food nights with friends, it is
yeah me too rofl
but my friends have some Standardbar so I think theres a big selection
Nah, I’m not interested in bars
what might be a worry is if you come off too foreign
generally from my experience, conforming to how a typical austrian acts, speaks etc. has gotten me a lot more opportunities and people have been a lot nicer
ofc this doesnt apply to the younger generation
How does a typical austrian act?
^
other immigrants/foreigners that I've spoken to have the same feeling, this need to 'conform' to being austrian instead of from their own culture
idk, just
how you as a native of your land
have these small things that are familar I'd say?
do you have an example?
I have literally no idea what a typical austrian is tbh
pfff, apart from speech not that many, but when you keep up with the local news, politics, when you know the small specific customs they have
me neither
Asso
this is quite typical actually
you mean like
you felt it too serki?
@celest robin it helps honestly, but I didn't mean specifically dialect
immigrants that want to integrate tend to enact their idealised version of the society they immigrated in
just seeing how people act and immitating them as much as possible nets you more than if you stick to your own personal/cultral values
thus possibly becoming more zealous than the natives
I mean I dont think young people in Czechia act that differently than young people in Austria but maybe I'm wrong :P
nah, neither do I, but even coming from england where we're supposedly a tad racist there were a few things to get used to
I mean, czechia was 400 years austria lol
400 years is a long time
I hope you get my meaning, its not like HUGE changes to your personality
Yeah, I’m already basically austrian

just differences in the ways you normally would talk/act go a long way in making people more comfortable with you
Bist a Tiroler, bist a Mensch
I think I get what you mean but I’m not sure how different austrians are
a bit more, uh, stuffy
Stuffy???
I mean if you get along well with Germans
at least the older people 🤷
youll also get along well with Austrians
I get along well with germans so i guess it will work out
don't austrians hate germans
lol do they
nah, its more of a joke
its more liek how a young brother is a little shit to his big one
I hope it doesnt put you off, I don't think you'd have a lot of problems seeing as most of your interactions will be as a student
like, even I didn't have much worries about it its just, certainly a 'con' if I can think of one
I like Weeno.
I’m not too worried, it can’t be worse than in czechia lol
hm, a con since you also like watertoast
Heckie‘s arguments were the most convincing tbh
Well yeah I'm sorry, but as I lready mentioned I can't offer as valuable advice as someone who moved here and used to live in a different place
but you dont have to compare the city with anything, i just wanted to know what you like about it 😄
You can't describe why you like Vienna. You just do.
Is it like Stockholm syndrome
don't get me wrong, vienna can be shitty in some districts too
@hot cloak
Tell me more about it
@nocturne frost
Btw, are veggies at farm markets expensive in vienna?
Just be in Wieden 24/7, literally no reason to leave it, you can practically ignore all other districts.
arrem has the vienna syndrome
@hot cloak no, cheaper than in most shops
also you can pick by hand
where shops will usually like
try to sell you a fucking 1kilo pack of leeks when I only need one for a soup 😒
BIO LEEKS 😒
i could cook 1kg of leek tbh
rofl
yeah, german natives and their bio obsession 😩

@hot cloak whens your german exam btw
tmr
danke schön ❤
werde ich machen^^
@viscid cape What do you mean by used in singular?
It's technically a singular pronoun but the grammar is identical to the plural.
Conjugations in singular would be awkward. "They is over there."
You're not wrong ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@opal sequoia Nevermind, I've misread it
Oh okay. 😄
It's called singular they but it conjugates in plural, yes
You'd probably hear that in some American dialects of English if it matters @oak patio
I know plenty of rednecks who talk like that.
Thankfully, I don't lol
The other interesting thing I've seen being done is misconjugation of verbs as a dialect thing. It's interesting if only because it's pretty damn hard to misconjugate verbs in English. E.g. "They thinks it's fine."
Considering most conjugated verbs resemble their other forms, yes
Um wie viel Uhr beginnt es?
Alles Gute
Viel Erfolg!!
viel glück!
Und? Hast du irgendwas verstanden?
lol Arrem
Arrem doesn't hold any punches

Wow shit German.
It's ok we still love you even if you're A.
Thanks, I’ll just stay A0 forever and eat veggies

Der zweite Teil übrigens auch vorbei
Wie war es?
Schwierig aber schaffbar
@hot cloak what was it like :o
wen blue suzu
das einzige das ich schaffen kann
@hot cloak also talked to a lot of people today about Wien, they all seem to agree on it being really clean, punctual, and having a lot of opportunities in the city
Did you sample people from Wien
inb4 someone from Vienna starts talking about 'Stadt mit der höchsten Lebensqualität"
tho it is true admittedly
Why is Basel only just starting to be counted? :p
Lies why are Aus cities so low on the list
this index seems to prioritise generally richer cities
which doesn't necessarily hint at better quality of life in general, tbh
I’m done and freeee

I'm hyped for you suzu
Danke, Lau!
Danke suzu!
Wofür lol
So when will you know the results?
Danke Suzu

oded?
@sudden rapids
?
Hecke wusste nicht, wo du bist, also hab ich dich gepongt
was willst du wissen? @nocturne frost
I just wanted to know how the layout of the exam
ik the standard procedure of 'lsitening, reading writing etc.' kinda sick of it, would just like, really in depth details on what you had to do
exactly like in the Modelsatz
what you had to talk about
how often they asked questions, was there a discussion and was it equally led or did you lead
but for a c1 level :')
hmm you gotta be more specific if you want specific answers
you mean in the speaking part?
I literally want to know about every detail that people usually skip over
i.e. what exactly you had to do
I've taken exams before but only for a lower level and probably with an exams office that I wont be doing my actual c1 examwith
testdaf is general level not specifically c1
it would be grand to know as much as possible in any case
well
reading and listening parts are exactly how it is in the modelsatz
just you read/listen and answer.
there's nothing more to it
same with writing actually
the speaking part is the only thing different
there's basically a voice recording program on and they let you hear a long stream of audio which is all the questions with pauses in between for speaking and thinking
there are also pauses between the parts
we were aable to go buy stuff fomr the uni cafeteria but that depends on your Testzentrum
and at first you are assigned to a computer with a number
which is the same number as your test kinda like a test id
hmm
you can eat and drink at the table
that's all I can think of
@nocturne frost
nope
huh
Oof that sucks
how do they know when to play the next recording
or are your answers time limited
oh, so nobody is asking you questions etc?
That’s so artificial lol
a friend asks you what students do on the holidays in your country
it really is suzu
but for some people it's easier I guess
and then there's a beep kinda and you start talking
and then there's a nother beep like 5 seconds before the speaing time ends
there are 7 questions total
Glad i didnt take testdaf then 🤔
so it is timed?
it involves some amount of roleplay on your part
So you just learn the format/how to solve the test?
but it's not hard
they give you some time to think your answer through
yes and no suzu
learning the format helps but being uncreative sucks
because then you have nothing to say
afaik they mention that you are not penalised if you go overtime
yes but there is a problem with that
thats a huge worry for me
isn't there a wait time before the question starts
really short
not being able to summarise in 5 seconds
same for me
espc. if you're making a point
idkwhat that means sorry
i remember going overtime for one question when i did it and being mostly silent for at least one other, i still got good marks for the speaking part
out of 5
which i didn't expect at all
so i think they're quite forgiving. They probably just look for pronunciation, understandability and coherence. They don't even rate grammar for that part
I mean coherence and understandability kinda go together with grammar
but yeah they forgive the small stuff
thank you both for your insight, it helped a lot really
no, not necessarily. You can get cases wrong, or bad word order, and still be coherent
np
Sure man
@hot cloak was sind deine Pläne nun da du (wahrscheinlich) den Test geschafft hast? ^^
ah okay^^
Wow. Suzu the waitress.
I hope you're ready for us to track you down and make you serve us water toast and well done meat.
maid suzu when

@slate ridge kaputtlachen
@peak burrow exegesis
Okay. Klärt mich auf. Was ist das für ein Pizza-Disput?
@sudden panther give Suzu C leve please
Proposal vetoed, sorry.
Lau, bin aber kein C
why
proper Pizza is Pizza with Pommes on it
I am officially team arrem now
and lots of Ketchup on top
@acoustic bay Whenever I see Mamimus, I prepare for him a Pineapple-Corn-Pizza as a tribute.
Ban Laurenz.

Suzu wann beginnst du zu arbetien
@sudden panther I’ll prepare a 100% raw pizza for you. Raw dough, raw veggies, raw meat.
Beste Pizza!
Mamimus auf einer Pizza mmmm lecker lecker
solange es essbar ist
Willst du Köchin werden
Ne, Kellnerin
Ich muss dann dein Restaurant mal besuchen
Warum denkst du, dass sie Chemie studiert? Natürlich, um Köchin zu werden. @desert pecan
Ach @hot cloak studiert auch Chemie?
Honestly we should have a test to be able to access the food channel.
Agreed.
I'll remove myself now then
Don't worry, the test just has a single question. "Are you Suzu?" Answer no and you're in.
Team Suzu is offended
I don't condone this e-bullying 😩
SoonTM @peak burrow
Where are you studying?
oof
lol
i can relate
Hä, aren’t you studying rn?
Yeah but it was quite a hassle
did you know teri is also switching to chem?
the chem team is growing
Teri the South African Korean?
yes
Did she leave the server?
I think she generally isnt active on discord rn
And no, what did she study before?
Biochem
Oh wait, you study chemistry, right Mamimus????
I think i asked you about it before lol
Sorry I take back my application I can't join a team of people that study chemistry
Yeah, visit your city that you left behind...
What’s the reason I’m coming? 🤔
Well assume language is at least one part of it
Nah, I like the program structure
Studying in English would have been fine too i guess
Where do you study, Mami?
I study in the Netherlands
Oh wait, you’re also Wiener?
I am nothing and everything
Cool
What are the pros and cons of wien?
How long till Arrem appears
just say his name three times
in a mirror
Vienna is a very beautiful and actually ranks highest in the world in terms of quality of living
Housing also isnt too hard to come by afaik
Up there we go
That being said it is quite a distance away from major chemical industry so it doesnt have the best industry connections (again afaik)
I know only one person that goes to the TU and she loves it but many people from the two other major unis (Wiener Uni and WU Wien) complain a bit about clunky systems
although austrians like to complain about eveything so take that as you will
i dont think it matters too much for the bachelor tbh
i didnt really prioritize it in my choice but some people like it since it increases the chance that theyll be working close to where they study now
I don’t prioritize it for bachelor but would be good to keep it in mind for masters i guess
generally the rhineland and ruhrgebiet are very highly industrialized in that sector
So austrians being cranky is really a thing?
Is it true that you gotta do a Doktor to get a job in the chem industry?
In welchem Semester bist du eigentlich?
2nd
Asso
So not a veteran by any means
I have met tons of people with just an MSc here
I dont think the job prospects are that dire
Here = the Netherlands?
Yeah
I cant say anything about austria ofc
I know noone even remotely interested in chem in AT
What about germany?
Germany has one of the strongest chemical industry sectors in the world
Now granted i know much more about the chem eng aspect
not too much about r&d
Yeah but I heard you usually gotta do a doktor to find a chem job in Germany
Whats r&d?
research and development
What’s the difference?
Well I want to later focus on the Engineering aspect
So im doing my masters in Chem Eng not Chemistry
What’s the diff between eng and r&d?
Chemistry is (in a very broad sense) good if you want to participate in the small scale research and development of stuff related to chemistry
such as materials, foods or drugs
Chemical Engineers are more concerned with bringing these things up to an industrial scale
I see 🤔
A chemist might discover a new material that can be made from pertrol
a chemical engineer will then be tasked to produce 100 tons of that material per year or whatever
(if this isnt obvious by now, i am heavily biased so please take this with a grain of salt lol) Process Tech which is very related to Chem Eng is for instance a highly stable field in West Germany at least
Do you think specializing for masters might increase your chances to get a job instead of studying just chemistry?
Hmmmm, interesting, I’ll keep that in mind
I think at least where I am studying, it does yes
But I wouldnt worry to much about that even if you are doing just chem
Tbh I have read up on quite a few statistics on the job security in the chemistry sector and i havent seen anything negative so far
Natural Sciences are well paying and chemists have the lowest unemployment rate among them
But of course please dont just take my word for this
I’ll look into it, thanks again! 👌
Biologie, Biochemie, Biotechnologie
big oof
yeah i think if you want to do bio, you should probably do biochem or something medicine related
Well, fortunately i don’t mmlol
Wow, I feel dissed by my team leader
You don’t wanna work as a biochemist anyways, Milly
okay... that’s true.
And according to this chart I’m working my way up to a better Arbeitslosenquote, yay!
Yay!
Nein.
Nein? Warum?
warum soll es denn illegal sein
wut.gif
Nice
Everyone has an opinion about how to legislate sex work (whether to legalize it, ban it or even tax it) ... but what do workers themselves think would work b...
auf dem Strich = on the street
Straßenstrich?
Yes
I have always seen Strich as line, or string.
it's an expression, take it as it is
^
do watch that ted talk though, it's pretty good
Ich werde.
Profanität? Inwiefern?
Linguee failed me again.
Does Obszönität work?
Sehr formal
Ja.
Bastard wird zensiert? 🤔
Ins USA? Vielleicht.
Was meinst du?
^
Tut mir leid, ich bin am Handy. @quiet tangle 💕
Ja, ich auch lol.
@pallid kelp Wieso?
Man kann unzensierte Versions bekommen, oder? Ist es total unerlaubt?
Die unzensierte Version von was?
Irgendwas. Musik, Sendungen, usw.
Ja, genau.
Wenn man in Amerika Radio höre. Viele Songs haben ein „Radio Edit“ ohne schlechte Worte.
(That sentence is probably butchered)

Oh mein Gott.
Google “Florida man” there’s some crazy shit there.
Seekühe?
People in florida are genuinely nuts
manatee
Manatees?
Yea
Ahhh, okay.
süß-sauer Wasser
What? Salt and fresh water? Brackish water?
Brackwasser
Hmmmmmm....
Okay.
Ich kann warte nicht.
I don’t think that’s the right way to say that....
What do you want to say?
Ich kann nicht warten
Warum warten und nicht warte?
Ich kann nicht mehr warten (=I can't wait any more)
Danke.
compare "he wait__s__" vs. "he can wait"
So... how do I know which to conjugate?
First one in English.
if you're using a modal verb, that's the one you conjugate
Okay.
Oh! Ratet mal, was heute in der Post kam.
cool
xD
Tru, tru.
german too is kinda funny in its way of very specifically naming things
Tru.
for example a Wasserpumpenzange which I needed yesterday.
in my native language we just have the term refer to its shape, not its specific function (which may vary with time)
Was ist dein Muttersprache?
And I also know what it's used for
Eventho I never heard that word in any context before
Italienisch
Ohhhhhh
yeah that's true
Native German 8)
Ja, ich weiß.
every language has its quirks. This one is of the german ones I like
Me too.
it just makes things really hard to find when in a pinch x)
Im gonna head to bed. Gute Nacht.
gn
Gute Nacht
@slate jungle From Middle High German armbrust, from Medieval Latin arbalista, from Late Latin arcuballista, from Latin arcus (“bow”) + ballista (“ancient military engine for hurling missiles”) (compare English arbalest); modified by folk etymology to appear to be Arm (“arm”) + Brust (“breast”).
Folk etymology is the best etymology
Oh! Makes more sense.
I wish I knew how to make discord bots, or even had the tools to do it.
Just learn.
hallo
Oh okay.
Hi Danish Ari.
hallo base
Wait are you typing from a phone then
...also das mit dem "i am not danish" hat gar nicht geholfen
ALLES GUTE.
Warum?
😄
lol soz accidentally pressed anrufen, I was looking for mention

undddd natürlich nennt mich dann jeder dänisch sobald ich "i am not danish" sage

Lol.
Just write "God bless America" and they will know.
Was für n Video?
Dwarf Fortress LP.
aso LPer
Nein, es gibt keine Antwort.
Ach so. Kein Bot auf Deutsch.
😦
Deshalb möchte ich wissen, wie man codiert.
Jedenfalls...
If i write stuff in JS can you put it into a thing to where i can test it?
Me? No, I don't know anything about JS.
Oof...
Schau mal in #282831147942281216
Cool.
Danke.
Whats improper of that one?
Weist du?
Yep I know basics of Python.
What are some important commands?
Yeah, i looked at a few.
Im on my phone and i have no idea how to like the Discord py thing to it lol.
if youre on android, i suggest checking out termux
@rancid agate i got Pythonista.
idk what that is, but termux is a bash terminal emulator which means that you can install packages very straightforwardly
See, i downloaded it, but it was extremely buggy on the iphone.
I dont even understand how packages work.
that's because the iPhone lets you have no freedom
happy birthday to me 😄
Aww, Alles Liebe Ari! ✨
Alles Gutes!!
Herzlichen Glückwünsch!
Alles Gute! 🎉
Alles Gute Ari
dankeee ❤
how not to translate:
Besides the perfect operation, our developers put their hands in fire for, the user interface designed in harmony with your CI specifications is also attached critical importance to.
I'd say something more like
In addition to flawless operation, which our developers vouch for, the user interface designed according to your CI specifications is crucial.
oh wait I just saw you weren't saying "how to translate" like as a badly-formed question
apologies
still nice that you translated it
That's cool! Ugh the amount of times I've gone through the English version of a foreign website and had to resist emailing them like "I hope you didn't pay anyone to translate this, if you want I'll do it for a nominal fee..."
I've been doing translation for an online company on and off for the past 7ish years
