Does anyone randomly know the names of the kinds of sparrows in northern Germany?
Or even better, have a digital bird identification guide auf Deutsch?
There's a small gray-blue species of sparrow that I see/hear all the time in Kiel. They start singing as soon as the sun comes up

Hi
Hi
Hi

hii
The problem with undertaking learning a language without taking any courses is that you end up with a very piecemeal understanding and ability. For instance, now that I'm in an actual German course, it's obvious that grammar structures are much more heavily emphasized in courses than I was able to motivate myself to do while learning on my own, and for very good reason
Now it feels like I'm way behind the others in grammar and it's not a very nice feeling
All I can do is continue practicing though, which sorta precludes complaining
That's somewhat surprising though because usually when I hear about people's experiences with German courses, the grammar part is really slow.
Like a semester just to learn A1 grammar or stuff like that.
The thing is, I placed at a B2 level in the placement test
And most of the others placed at B1 last semester and had that entire semester to iron out any confusion about things like conjugation of irregular verbs, the more complicated tenses, and adjective endings, all of which are still problems for me
Do you have any ideas why you have trouble with them?
As far as I can tell it comes down in large part to two things: the fact that I used grammar textbooks from the resources list which are written in English, and the fact that I learned in large part with the intention of being able to pass the Goethe/Hueber/TestDaF B2 exam hoping that it would be enough to get me through the Einstufungstest for the Uni here.
And those tests don't emphasize grammar structures as much as overall understanding
But is there some aspect of your study technique or learning style that may be making it harder for you to retain the information?
It might help if you can identify that.
Technically the grammar part should be the easiest part to self-learn, in my opinion.
Because speaking and colloquialisms and vocab are the parts that can be difficult to access without working with other people.
True. That's an entirely different can of worms though, namely that learning grammar is something I have to really force myself to do because of how boring/frustrating I find it. Reading, writing, and speaking aren't really problems for me, other than that my writing generally needs heavy revision after the initial first draft (although that's true of any writing in any language)
Yeah.
I see, it makes sense.
I don't think you are as far away from understanding as you think. You probably just need to sit down and do the reading.
And practice.
I figure that if I can get through 5 pages a day in this book, I'll be much closer to the level of the others when I finish it in about a month
Some of the stuff I probably won't really need to practice, so it may not even take an entire month
Oh sure, a month should be more than enough.
For the concepts you mentioned.
In fact, I think someone could reasonably learn up to B2 grammar in a month from A0 with some dedication, so you can definitely do it from B2.
And I recommend asking some people here to do practice with you because it will help you even more.
Yep; I haven't been that active here for a few weeks now because of all the stuff I've needed to get organized and trying to orient myself in the Lektorat, but the routine has settled and now it's time to work.
😮
Good luck.
Well since we're on the topic, pop quiz: Translate I follow the black cats. @mild cosmos
Er ist vor deinem Satz geflohen.
😔
What specifically do you need help with?
it says that i need to write a report with the title "ein schöner nachtmittag"
and im just lost
Well, no one is going to write it for you
oh oke
But if you try it yourself and have specific questions about how to write something people are more likely to help
but idk how to start it thats the problem
@opal sequoia Ich folge die schwarze Katzen. ;)
@mild cosmos Ne.
Da
It's incorrect.
Nice. 😄
Naja aber Wortschatz ist doch eine andere Thema. :D
@mild cosmos brauchst du Hilfe beim herrlichen Passiv?
@shy bobcat Bürger

XD
@mild cosmos dazu habe ich etwas geschrieben: https://germanlearningresources.blogspot.de/2018/03/passive-voice-tenses-and-moods.html?m=1
Covers how to build the passive voice in the various available tenses and moods.
Guten morgen du schöner Kanal.
can I ask a question about memorising words please?
on lingvist I reached about 2800 words so far in the best 5 months. however, I am not getting them all right during revision. Instead of ein..... I type an...., or ver.... I type er... etc. I mix and confuse a few hundred at least. what should I do? any advice?
another example: anstand (wrong) instead of abstand
read texts? maybe that could help
Then you get used to the context each word is usually used in
@runic rain Du lebst!

@runic rain ER LEBT!
@pallid kelp hello berzi! did you do the goethe c1 exam?
no i only ever sat testdaf
although if you need help, someone over at #archived-culture-study-visa might know about it
Ok, thanks berzi! ^^
Hmmm. Wie ist die Wortstellung in diesem Satz? Von einem Drittel der Studenten wird Medizin studiert.
Oder ist es überhaupt richtig geschrieben?
Hallo
guys, does this look oki?
Does it do passive yet
xD
theres another perspective line you draw
ask foxxo about the 3 axis
but theres another line you can draw connecting the front to the back uhh
also
the legs look the right length. different breeds have different proportioins but neck loos like it can be a tad longer
remember like they bend their neck down and extend their head and that makes their mouth touch the ground
ehh
it looks good so far tho flappy :3
yay then

!!!!
dyes*
Idk about horses but i feel that the front legs are a bit too close to each other - wondering how it would keep stability
You can pm foxxo to ask
We’re going for realism
Well rather than the distance I think the main problem is the length/width and shading. The way the front legs are drawn makes the farther leg look closer and bigger than the closer one.
But to be fair, leg proportions can be tricky.
Well shading with a pen is fokken tricky.
Yes it is.
Warum hat das Pferd blaue Socken an?
Weil das die einzigen Socken waren, die über seine Hufe gepasst haben.
lol
Legs
XD
._.
Shouldn’t those be bandages for stability?
So their feet don’t go willy nilly everywhere and just break off
These are more to protect the horse
To protect a horse simply keep it in a cage its whole life. Can't get hurt if you're not exposed to any danger.

Nah Soo, you're the only Czechette we have here.
Do you think the czech or vietnamese L would be more similar to the german one?
Ah arrem
Halp D:
I don't know the Vietnamemese L.
Though if you want a good answer, the German L is the most similar to the German L. Don't settle for an approximation, learn the real thing.
😐
What is Czech L?
can you record it?
I think there are two different Ls in Czech
one is palatalized and one is not
Someone told me it’s the dark L 🤔
Idk what palatalized it
that's a Slavic thing
also present in Irish somehow
I still dont know :D
@keen snow where can i record it?
Vocaroo is a quick and easy way to share voice messages over the interwebs.
I listened to some words on forvo and the L just sounds like German.
Arrem said i sound weird
Arrem sounds weird
wow pferdo

I looked on the internet and it says nothing about Czech having two L sounds. 🤔

ban Eyes he wants it so bad
Nah.
okay
idk, i was already told once before that my L is weird ;-;
like when i said hals but it sounded like haus in the mic and the conclusion was that i have a dark L or sth ;-;
Idk what that is.
hmmm, i think they said that its like an american L but not sure rn 🤔
you're a native slav roit?
What?
if so your L shouldn't be bad
It's not bad, it's just different.
howwww ;-;
this is how fetishes are born
huh
conclusion: my L is different and according to oxi i should try tongue flicking (idk what that is????)

Hallo Leute! This is a random question but if anyone who can speak fluent German (and by “fluent” I mean knows enough to hold conversations) message me if you got a Ps4? Cause I have one german friend on ps4 but since he’s in Germany the time difference from there and the US is annoying 👎🏼. I learn a lot better when I speak verbally with someone in german rather than messages. So if you got a Ps4 and are willing to hang out, play some games and help me practice my german just shoot me a message! Dankeschön! 😃👍🏼🎮
maybe i've mentioned this before but wouldn't it be best if the user's name when quoted by the bot's >quote were an actual mention, so the user can know they've been quoted?
@astral elm memorise all of this and then prepare for pop quiz at unknown time

and depending if Im able to help you or not xD I haven't a clue
ill just post it here

could you explain this pls?
Oh
I can do this quickly
Beantown
refers to the regional dish of Boston baked beans. According to Boston-Online.com, back in colonial days, a favorite Boston food was beans baked in molasses for several hours. Sailors and traders called it "Beantown" while the locals did not refer to their city by that nickname
The Hub
is a shortened form of a phrase recorded by writer Oliver Wendell Holmes, The Hub of the Solar System.[1] This has since developed into The Hub of the Universe.
America's Walking City
was given due to Boston's compact and high density nature, which has made walking an effective and popular mode of transit in the city. In fact, it has the seventh-highest percentage of pedestrian commuters of any city in the United States, while neighboring Cambridge is the highest.
The Cradle of Liberty
derives from Boston's role in instigating the American Revolution. Also a nickname of Philadelphia
those are all of the nicknames
Is there anything else that doesn't make any sense @hot cloak ? 😄
thanks so much kelsey!! ❤ can you tell me more about the hub? whos O. W. Holmes?
this is the only other thing I think that could be a tad confusing, this is New England, USA
The [1] in there tells me that he's pulling the info from Wikipedia.
Do yer own research Soo.
he
ok
I just pulled them from there ^^ suzu might notve known what to look for
stop being mean arrem

yeah, idk how to find info about usa D:
👍
The wikipedia link is literally the first thing that comes up when you google "Beantown".
The internet is your friend.
bullies arrem
You can't bully me, I'm invincible. And highly intelligent. And great.
heres some info on that dude :3
But combine us all and we are better
thanks kelsey ❤
But Ana you're all girls. At least I can do STEM.
I will fight you.
you're welcome 😄 the article doesn't look too crazy :3 but Im here if ya need helperino
youre also a girl arrem
arrem is too good to be a girl
wow
go away pferdo
@sudden panther ana would you have time to explain some slides about new england to me rn?
Sure.
Baked beans, chowder, lobster.
New England is huge on seafood.
Getting lobster there right off the boat is common, and super popular.
Chowder is a cream based soup that generally has clams in it, but over time it has evolved to literally have anything. As long as it is cream based. However, in New England, just clam chowder.
Or New England Chowder
It also really depends on where you go in said states, too.
It's like...sausage in Germany.
i see!
Also, lobster roles are good thing to bring up with the lobster.
ariiii!!
Which are very common in Boston.
idk
sausage is universal in germany
there's no such thing as "arizona style chowder"
😄
whats so typical bostonish about this?
icic
It had major importance in the beginning of America.
Basically, it is one of the oldest cities in NA.
that looks either like boston or england
so yeah 😄
and this?
so if it looks like england and is in america, its new england?
Like really really old.
I mean, kinda.
Remember that New England was part of England.
Till the revolution.
A lot of battles happened around there also.
You're looking at the most historic area imo of America, it is very interesting.
If you ever get time read up about it.
Well, in regards to the formation of America.
whats the newest part?
The Newest part of America?
Or New England?
Everything to the west gets younger and younger in regards to colonization, mainly due to the fact that NA is a massive land mass.
But it is still pretty old,.
icic
🤠 😄
I always wonder how cowboys always got tons of women, they must've smelled so badly.
everyone would have smelled badly, it's the old west
Trueeeee.
Just the stench of people. Icky.
Still consider though Suzu, that while I am saying theyre younger they're still pretty old.
That's basically the stench of everything before the 20th century though
But in comparison to Europe we are babies.
yeah, "old" is somewhat different in europe
Yeah.
I mean there are natives, but many NA natives didn't have written language.
SA natives and CA did.
Many resorted to just using the latin alphabet to write.
Well it's mostly just the Mayans
Even then, the English had to come and give it to them.
The Aztecs did.
SA Natives were super advanced.
Tru
While I love my family, the NA natives were still hunters and gatherers.
They never really settled.
So they never really advanced because peoples that move don't
They didn't really rely on a lot of other materials than stone though didn't they
Though they did have some agriculture.
They did.
They actually became so advanced that one of their cities collapsed.
But I reckon they were advanced in many aspects.
Because they couldn't support their population.
Not enough food.
They lidorally built a city on water
That is now where Mexico City is.
Bless them very much indeed
Also: they had the most advanced way of child birth.
Compared to the Europeans.
Which is very odd.
are you american, kannes?
Would you like to though
use a fancy word

no, but i like food so in case i ever visit usa :D
Well, one of those are hot wings.
neither looks like a steak to me?
thats called a steak????????
Nah, steaks are still FULL pieces of meat.
But they cook it then cut it.
The cut is still steak
oh!
Bottom right looks liike perogi.
what's perogi
Like pierogi, but cheaper.

whats pierogi???
But they're native to Europe.
A dumpling filled with cheesey mashed potatoes.
Can have meat inside of them.
I like to fry mine with Bacon and onions.
that sounds good tbh
Serve with sour cream and some cheese on top.
They can be served just boiled or boiled then panfried.
oh icic
hahaha
Original NA dishes
Tater tots?
Nanaimo bars.
Deep dish is a sin.
pizzas in america are a bad idea
deep dish pizza is not a dish
They are yeah.
I actually
It is very gross.
kinda like it sorry ana
ny best pizza 😤
I went to Chicago to try ti
the cheese goo pile
NY BEST PIZZA.
ny THIN
Or as Canadians call it, 'zaaah'
ny's are THIN thots
in general very fattening
and good 😤 @nocturne frost
I mean, yes.
echh
To be fair the winters here back in the day were rough.
for thin pizza go closer to italy
People had to fookin survive.
or actual italy
Not so much anymore.
the closer you are to italy, the better your pizza tastes
Very nice insulation I presume
That is why Chowder was a big deal.
its just a fact
Or stews.
Chowder is good though
meatloaf
my teacher added this to the presentation https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=25&v=LaA5dNFrFMI
I found this bit hilarious when I first watched it a few years ago...I guess Jon prefers New York style pizza...
yes but its a CLASSIC
LOL
lmfao
big goo cheese
Casserole lel
I dont want to type out an exam plan.
Casserole is so American it hurts.
You can make lidorally anything into Casserole.
Even French toast.
why do i feel that usa just takes everything, makes it bigger and renames it lol
They do.
casserole is just stolen from europe
NEW york.
Yes.
no we say stew
How many French words have you stolen in English?
There is lidorally a york in Toronto.

Floppy, you made us speak French tbf.

The French hated English.

wow
Every dish is stolen tbh
lmfao the implication that british people were fucking stupid
That is why English has so many French words.
Basically, yeah Hecke
lol
Actually, the noodles that were stolen from the Chinese aren't even the same chemically
Which is super cool.
Chinese noodles are stolen from Central Asia
Although that probably traces back to 4000+ years ago
Doesn't china own a lot of central asia now tbf
And with the huns owning like
most of that area for years
isnt china literally central asia
isnt china the world
They think they are
Tbh all of the west coast of Canada is fuckign chinese
it is insane
lidorally no english
That's actually true it hurts
The chinese are fucking up the economy there.
Because they're buying land while staying in China IN Vancouver.
Which is boosting all the land prices.
They shouldn't be allowed to do that.
lmfao
Land prices go berserk wherever Sinophere people go
a bunch of rich people just going
Hongkongers included
'ey lets fuck with some natives'
It's a cultural thing.
Renting an apartment for life is considered a disgrace in Chinese culture
For some reason
renting is for teenagers and those who cant get their life together apparently
renting an apartment for life is normal in germany
Dude it is 800 just to rent a room
is it?
I precisely like Germany for that
In an apartment with 3 others
wow thats so expensive D:
@sudden panther Hah try Hong Kong
Then you have your taxes.
omfg, half goes to the rent
Your car, bus pass, food(which is also taxed)
half your pay going to rent is pretty normal
Yeah but for just a ROOM.
like, for most teenagers
In a tiny apartment
With 3 others?
1500 is above min wage too.
Which no one actually gets. 👀
move to ger ana banana
300 euro for a room in germany
you'll start culinary trends because nobody there knows how to cook
Apparently they don't have tacos.
What a lawless land.
they don't have tacos
oh yeah, you have to make your own taco shells
😱
which kinda sucks
I can make tortillas.
oh hey we can work out a deal
I have the press.
oh i tried my first taco yesterday
my mom can import them for us in care packages
If i had irl friends Id cook all the time.
It apparently costs 60k HKD (€6k) to buy a single square feet in one of the newest flats in Hong Kong
llmao
hahah bye hong kong
i pay 390€ for a 50 m² two-room apartment 😄
K moving to germany.
alright 😄
@hot cloak linguini! ^o^
I'm IN Germany and I want to move to Germany
I want to know that suzu
@hot cloak well especially among young germans yes
You can buy an apartment?
@keen snow yes
i asked for you hecke^^
Isn't the housing market a bit awry in DE these days too
for pretty cheap actually, I checked a few years ago, the prices were very very low for good areas and good space
a home in ger is prolly different
espc with a stable job
So you have to wait till youre like 27.
There's mort in mortgage so
haha
well in germany if you buy a house, you pretty much sit on your debts for a long time too ..
hecke, du boese
I just dont plan to have a family, really, so I dont see a point for a house.
At least, not right now.
its just nice to have space sometimes
exactly
I really want a garden for example
like when I'm in my 30s ofc
but still, its something to aim for
I would love a garden, one day.
By regular I mean
(Except those who don't like guys)
Yes very much yes please
@prime remnant depends on the area ... it west-germany its pretty hard to find an apartment for a reasonable price
I once met up with a guy and handed him a meme on paper.
I love doing memes with my guy
at least these are my experiences @prime remnant
shit guy
Weed out the bad ones by sending them memes.
@cyan spire Try me airbnbing €690 for a month in Heidelberg
there are people who do that
@prime remnant south germany is gonna rip a big whole in your pocket. not recommended
like me if I got desperate
@prime remnant try those not so overrated cities
ohhhh
@keen snow nope
I can't I'm literally doing a practicum here lol
someone moving near arremu
similar i would guess ana
ask real arrem
I just want to be in the EU.
ana is real arrem
France, Germany, or Austria.
I like west germany because of the cluster of major cities there
@keen snow WHO DOESN'T
@prime remnant ... have you thought about sharing an apartment with a couple of people? thats what young germans usually do
Wrong Arrem dood.
@nocturne frost i dont like the "ruhrpott"
I am nootnoot.
@cyan spire I'm only staying for a month. I'm sure I'll find something on WG-Gesucht if I were here for a semester or something
Tbh I lived in the middle of nowhere most of my life, I want to live in or around a city.
And tbh those are quite affordable
With transport.
@nocturne frost well the ruhrpott are those cities that pretty close to each other like Essen, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund etc.
Or somewhere I can ride a bike.
@nocturne frost dunno i dont like the urban environment there lol
leipzig is beautiful, lots of bikers there because its very open
ooooo
same for a lot of central places
@nocturne frost and also the coal boom is way gone. ruhrpott used to be very rich area during the 70s throughout the 90s due to the high demand for coal
if you really want a city though, that western cluster that linguist suggested
oh I know, I dont mind that
Its a shitty area in some respects
and I saw that, andI still have a love for it so
I guess I'm good
Leipzig is affordable yus
leipzig is so so pretty
I lidorally live in an area burnt out due to recession
@nocturne frost i live in Kassel and its actually quite nice. took me a while to get used to the vibe there
a good uni too
That's fine e lol
whereabouts is kassel?
The only thing about Ruhrpott I know is that Düsseldorf has a lot of good Japanese food
@nocturne frost oh yeah i actually thought about maybe doing my master in leipzig. apartments are dirt cheap there
düsseldorf is an asian hub
lots of choice for asian food and markets
leipzig was like a dream when I went
literal perfect city, not crowded like most
more japanese than asian
beautiful, cheap
lots of ammenities readily available
lots of museums and exhibits affiliated with the university too
@nocturne frost generally speaking the east are cheap because the universities from the west advertised alot about their campuses; therefore, many people moved to west
düsseldorf is like small-japan, love it
its filled with a LOT of different foreigners
like, unlike north n east germany, not many people there are white
theres a part of town that has more middle eastern style bakeries and shops
Oh yes middle eastern stuff
I think the density is quite high all over Germany so to speak
