however, the locative survived in pronominal adverbs and such, as vestiges of the old system

for example, you had *in, *inn, *innai, *innanē (respectively the prepositional, allative, locative, ablative)

of those 4 forms, only 2 survive in modern german: in, innen.
middle high german had 3: in, inne, innen
and old high german had all of the four: in, īn, inne, innana
