But müssen in past form, and not müssen in Konjunktiv II, as you wrote. 😛
oooh, nice command
cri everitim
I will make sure to abuse it thoroughly
you will forget about it tomorrow
"Die arme Floppsel musste schwierige Sätze zu übersetzen, weil ein gemeiner Memer sie zu zwang."
Good. And what kind of a verb is müssen?
I think it's slowly digging into my head Solet, I made that mistake a lot
"A good one, Arrem"
Modal.

Haben, sein and werden are auxiliary.
Ah.
And what funny little thing do modal verbs do when combined with other verbs that we mentioned 27528345723458 times before?
Wow I don't even know the right words. I knew it was modal somehow but was confused.

Or rather, what don't they do.
errr lemme think a bit
Take your time. We still have 2 days left. 😛
Keep thinking. 😉
You got declension right
wot finally
declintonation
Forget zu, and forget zu too 🎼
Modals don't take zu. The next time you forget it, I want to see it written 100 times on paper.
Hey Arrem, I have returned from my much-needed nap. ^^
Oh Casca is back.
Ahh, naps are so nice.

😮 I haven't missed the bully?
Bullying in progress.
He has awoken... from his deep slumber...
you did
"Die arme Floppsel musste schwierige Sätze übersetzen, weil ein gemeiner Memer sie zu zwang."
tell me this is righto now
Am I the bully? 😦
Almost.
No, Cas, you're too nice to be a bully
Nuh you're not Casca.
Also, KELSEYYYYYYYYYY!
You were right to doubt that zu at the end.
Agreed with Kelsey.

Aw. ❤
Heyo Casca
KRYPTIKKK!
Wall of grammar incoming. Please hold.
god Casca we seriously missed you this week ;w;
BERSERKKK 💌
yeah what
That's not the source of my name. ^^
lel
Casca has always been Casca
I know, you told me 3x but I'll keep asking anyway.
😛
That reminds me that I got to have a nickname for my account to see my marks, and I just put my name and i was already taken. So I just put "Flappsy" and it went right away.
Thanks Solet.
On a side note @fair iron , @lavish saddle met an austrian friend and didn't even invite you to join them for a coffee.
😏
lel
/gossipqueen
😦

if anything, Arrem is closer haha
So. We've already said that we use jemanden zwingen, etwas zu tun before. With that, we can write sentences like
Casca zwingt Flops, Sätze zu übersetzen.
I use zwingen, and then specify what I'm forcing you to do in the next clause. Many other verbs act exactly like this. However, when you have , weil ein gemeiner Memer sie zu zwang., the zu is kinda lonely there. When we have a lone preposition like that, we prefix it with a da-, so in your case, it would be dazu.
Riding the train to Germany is a whole day kinda ordeal x-x
You didn't invite me either though. 😦
hoyl what
💔 sry arremsauce
Arrem
@lavish saddle rekt
I did another Daniel challenge
@ocean robin Read Arrem's explanashun.
Let's just all meet up in Wien and take all of the tables in a café
I did. And I am confused.
shove all of the tables together haha
I don't drink coffee.
I also wasn't on a train. ^^
Casca, is tee > coffee for you?
lol
Pussies
wow rude
Yes, Flappy.
Tea is way better than coffee
Not rude, Flappy.
They have some pretty good hot choco 😋
welcome to the club then wee
proper just plain British/Irish tea is the best
Isn't "pussies" rude? TIL.
if you take other exotic flavours then you're a traitor
also don't add sugar
and just a drop of milk and rich tea biscuits
"Die arme Floppsel musste schwierige Sätze übersetzen, weil ein gemeiner Memer sie dazu zwang."
I think.
Wow nice
It's the short form of pusillanimous (cowardly), Flappy. ^^
^Exactly
That's what I thought
this song
is good
https://vocaroo.com/i/s0NtKLMHgnnl it's bad
HALLLOOOOOOOO
basically just say I went shopping
and then nothing else
then I said 1 random thing about my school
uuuhh jaaaaa. Damn Daniel magnificent.
that's it
Wooow. 4 minutes. Great job Dannerd.
it's not 4 minutes is it
I can't do that yet.
IT IS what

LOL

@hot cloak Is this improv?
Nice
it's bad improv though
I should master the H
"besooouchte" flops, September 21th
Yessss Flops.
but I've always mixed it up with Fs for some reason
even since I was a kid
I dunno why
lol
Hinter Hermann Hannes Haus hängen hundert Hemden raus. Hundert Hemden hängen raus, hinter Hermann Hannes Haus!
Hinterm hohen Haus hackt Hans hartes Holz. Hartes Holz hackt Hans hinterm hohen Haus.
Hundert hurtige Hunde hetzen hinter hundert hurtigen Hasen her.
Hätte Hänschen Hans Holz hacken hören, hätte Hänschen Hans Holz hacken helfen.
Flops. Reading time.
Guten Tag.
Evil, arrem
THE HECK ARREM WHY
*the 'eck
lmao
Flapsy, los, lesen! :D
ja
"hohen" hardest word ever for flops
For every h you omit you have to read it one more time. :D
👀
magaegaetgza
Hm. I got the sentence like that. I'll leave it as it is because Solet already finished, I guess. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Don't worry then you'll just try again.
You can stick a können at the end I suppose.
IT'S SO WEIRD WITHOUT

slight speed run version
Til-Schweiger-Qualität
mach mal auf badisch
btw, Holzen hacken helfen.
you can also translate Die, die die, die die Didi-Hallervorden-Show großartig finden, verachten, sind Snobs. Flops.
Fies. :D
<@&221738850748334080> schaut euch mal bitte im VC den @hot cloak an
oh ha
Memes.
Immer diese Trolle .-.
Thanks Korea.
np
It's so hard to find Zungenbrecher with H. Why can't Frenchies suck at pronouncing some other letter. 😦
Why'd he change his username to Heil though? We've had shitheads who pretended to be learners just to mess with people and waste their time. Such as that guy who made Casca translate random paragraphs.
Oh yeah.
That was so funny though
Children are always on my back and I can't read properly.
Ban children.
But then where would Flappy go?
Also I thought you were a fox, not a camel. 🤔
Gonna eat.
Speaking of which, where is Camel?
😦
^^
How do you play that
She's gone though, apparently
Ban Flopper.
Noah Ritter from Wilkes-Barre steals the show from Newswatch 16's Sofia Ojeda during an interview at the Wayne County Fair. More great "Apparently Kid" clips...
btw, for everyone that's been talking about the ich verstehe nur Bahnhof phrase
here's the context for where it came from, it's actually kinda sad :(
Since train was the primary means of transportation, many soldiers associated the train station (Bahnhof) with returning home. Because the soldiers thought a lot about returning home it could happen that they could or would not follow the conversation because they "only understood train station"
that kid, lol
Interesting
I recall him saying something funny
recording soon
Good Flopper.
https://vocaroo.com/i/s0SEpmXT6D4G have fun you killed me
that's amazing 😄

I imagine her speaking as this
yep^^
it sounds like
whenever french people have to pronounce the h
they are lacking fresh air
hey Fläppers
well tbh yeah every h took my breath
https://de.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Kategorie:Substantiv_(Deutsch)&pagefrom=H You can use this for practice.
but h is important
Go ahead and pick some of those. 😛

you'll get the hang of h eventually @ocean robin 👍

D:
-hugs you-
You'll get the hang of it. 😃
soon One day yup.
You'll get the hang of it

inb4 pronunciation lesson
^

Flappy, repeat Kamehameha over and over.
And yo Arrem which were the sounds I couldn't pronounce?
lmao casca that cracked me up
true
Where have we gone wrong
"the hell are you doing"
Then you can also say the German h. ^^

Say herbs
i can't say that, if I do I will just yell that and my parents will think I am crazy
From what I remember, you missed one umlaut again and messed up two Hs.
`erbs
Your Z in Holz is a bit idk.
British English?
American English, sorry.
Hell yeah Casca because I am actually learning British English in school.
I learn both.
True, cockney accent wouldn't pronounce the 'h's.
Can you say "Hell yeah"?
Yes.
@fair iron
Yes?
Anyone remember orange Daniel?
Screenshot memories
I do.

Look Casca, it's baby Casca!
^^
lel
One day, we'll say "hey guys, remember orange Flops". In 2173.
yeah, I do, sadly
I remember that. ^^
Keeeek. Rekt.
a cute old nully1
"hey blue flops, remember orange flops?"
Say "ح"
Verb and noun, Flappy. ^^
Ah.
I read "de"
If you'd care to read what's written inside the parentheses. 😛
it even said that there
then google has no idea where I live
🤔
didnt see the first " lol
Cassie. Wots a nice adjective for a dog.
Lovely.
we already know daniel
apparently right
wait whatt daniel
I live in Switzerland

lel
The soft pillow I gave to the good old lady somehow killed her and her lovely little dog.
Translate Flopperino.
that picture was from a month ago and I haven't posted it since 🤔
how would a soft pillow kill a dog?
https://vocaroo.com/i/s1LyZmVBWB4V i can't wow
It was a gift.
He would be chucked to death with the pillow.
Who would smother a puppy with anything other than love. 😦
^
i would like to chuck someone to death
Chuck a pillow.
where's the text
Better for us.
@Cassie well, Floppsel, apparently.
aww you definitely hear that Fläppy is French ❤
take my pronunciation example with a grain of salt though Flappy, you know my native language is German
LOL
Don't chuck me to death
Can confirm, Catto. We made her read Fleur's (Harry Potter) lines yesterday. It was amazing.
aww
on thursday
might be worth creeping in VC from time to time then
I still have it I think
Nuh nuh nuh, it was a recording.
I also did the uuuh what is that long word again
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?
Nope.
Pneumonoultramicroscopicsillicovolcanoconisosis?
I can say the first one
Nuh, the one that Korea says everytime.
I read the whole text.
because I'm not a nerd
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?
Quarzstaublunge
https://clyp.it/oxfhu0se this one Casca. That'll be faster.
Wasn't that the fear of long words?
Yep. ^^
I hope it's not deleted :0
Polyethylenterephtalat?
If Harry Hunt hunts heavy hairy hares,
Where are the heavy hairy hares Harry Hunt hunts?
They probably couldn't read that in Australia without bursting into laughter
Resident 13 year olds
I almost did.
Antidisestablishmentarianism?
😻
"anti-dis"
I did when I finished though for solid 5 minutes.
🤔

No, Chuck.
Fläppy that "non" in between was pretty funny in that recording 😄
lel
Flappy
Sorry Casca
are there no H sounds in French?
^^
Are you translating it, flappy?
Electroencephalographically?
And nuh I am not.
are they hard for you?
yes
satanarchäolügenialkohöllisch
Can I just post my suggestion then?
In Huron, a hewer, Hugh Hughes,
Hewed yews of unusual hues.
Hugh Hughes used blue yews
To build sheds for new ewes;
So his new ewes blue-hued ewe-sheds use
Don't know how half of that is meant to be pronounced myself
The soft pillow I gave to the good old lady somehow killed her and her lovely little dog.
Nobody answered me in #questions, so I'll be annoying and post it here instead 😏
"Als die Prinzessin von den Heldentaten des Prinzen hörte, furchtete sie, dass sie seiner unwürdig sei."
Can one report even fears/hopes/beliefs in K1, even when they're not "spoken"?
She said I could do it 😦
She's a meme.
@hot cloak look how I will pronounce those words and you'll quickly see why I struggle so much with H. Recording soon.
spoiler
Better! The second clause is still a tiny bit off though.
Is it the placement of "irgendwie"?
yes
Oh
Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann. 🎶
Nena
💯
I don't know why I looked at the third one 🤔
https://vocaroo.com/i/s1Ws4UwlaN8E Daniel, hear closely while reading and tell me what you think.
Alte is a substantivized adjective and should be declined like one. Alternatively just make her and alte Dame. That's what I was going for. 😛

rip
You have to decline substantivized adjectives?
Fläppy that was way too fast for me ^.^
0:24 sounds a bit like a h sound
L'HOPITAL
Anyway did you hear a h sound somewhere? 😛
0:24
Aye aye hen. Angestellter, but der Angestellte, for example.
now I pronounce the French words
@sudden panther Always another layer, lol. Thanks!
huh dehors was the closest imo
while he understood this stuff I am completely confused about that stuff
Can confirm, hen.
https://vocaroo.com/i/s0Ncqtvo6WBW @ocean robin
Daniel promoted to native French.
You want to a text in German? 🤔
No, I was just meming the spelling of "want".
flappy I did it seriously this time
by seriously I mean
the most English accent I could do
Was würden bloß die Nachbarn sagen,
it's great in fact, you don't say that often
You can also tell us how much of that you actually understand.
okay flappy pronounce this
Pay attention to your Hs and your umlauts.
o.o Daniel why
HELL IT'S THE SEQUEL
ba mhaith liom dul go dtí an síopa
much hype
@ocean robin You might have noticed from Daniel's recording but note that the l in "half" is silent
Unfortunately the h is not 😄

It is with a Cockney accent. ^^

Took 'im to the 'ospital.
I can always add more paragraphs if you'd like. 😛
the change between French to German will be painful but let'z go
You suck.
are there any obvious giveaways in my speech of my native language
No.
Read the paragraph I posted.
Nah but seriously, you're pretty good. I sometimes think that your ch sounds a bit too soft, but hey.
https://vocaroo.com/i/s1RvZ8M7zbEl have fun pals
I have a little feel that I fokked up umlauts again
Herr Dursely confirmed
undursleyhaft

I love the French ch c:
Awww.
Also known as sch.
^
XD
You don't say "schat" for "chat" though lel
like the ach ch?
That first auch was nice though.
Well your hard ch is fine, but the soft one is a sch.
still besouucht is the best
ed, Flappy.
I can only do a sch and for the hard ch I need to cheat with my guttural r 😐
well
How to say ä => just say it!
3 months ago I could say them fine
and then I forgot when i was on holiday
If I do a recording of that paragraph can you guys tell me which sound I would gain the most from working on? Ie. what sound that's the farthest from the proper pronunciation
H is the only sound that I mess up with, as umlauts?
Have you forgotten about the ch, Floppo? 😛
Oh this ch.
wow 2 fast fur meh
That was pretty good.
^
Arrem German teacher.
thanks
I swear that soon I will do a correct translation in the first attempt.
D:
Until it disappears.
Wise words.
do you want it to disappear tho
💯
ehh, I mean I'd rather not be quite that optimistic
ehhh I mean being optimistic is the point
Wow Daniel you worry too much. 😦
I doubt it would be a problem if it even stayed how it is
I know Flappy
That's the way I am
exactly like me when I am in high school.
Because I dunno if you have seen my stressed nature here yet, which is really present IRL.
"The rich lady, whose fat husband I saw yesterday, bought me the pretty flowers that I told you about."
Did I overdo it?
LMAO THE HELL IS THAT SENTENCE
i am laughing so hard
A sentence. With lots and lots of juicy adjectives for you to practice on.
at the same time

Good. A happy-teared Flappy is the best Flappy.
at once implies like an order or like

When Daniel corrects me I feel I am B2.
@pine ginkgo Is that what I should focus on? https://clyp.it/ywhbjubd?token=b16f8a49cfed71641fdabd7d63fd6ed5
lol don't worry about it Flappy
I'm only being so picky because you're gonna be C2 soon 😃
well you're fluent in English in my books that's for sure
Haha
and ch isn't sch
I know 😦
Actually the funny thing is that when I was doing history in English and that I had my homework to do, the other pupils (which are supposed to be A2/B1) did half a sheet and there's me who writes 2 pages for 2 questions with vocabulary that others don't know.
make it a sharp sound
Yeah the ch and the z are definitely the most obvious.
Night Fläppy
one day i'll translate a sentence without making a mistake
go ahead flopps
sleep time loool
Every single time.
How bad is my hard ch?
If it were me I would have stayed. But it's Daddy. :(
Arrem
Dors bien, Flappy!
I thought you were talking about my ich ch being bad before that's why I recorded myself
et fais de beaux rêves
Very well then. The sentence will be waiting for you tomorrow.
Oh, merci Casca.
No Dannerd, I do recall one of your chs sounding a bit weird before. The ones that you recorded were great though.
hmm
you're probably right
it would likely be me trying to speak faster than I'm currently capable of and consonants and vowels getting muffled up
because I've always been able to pronounce them seperately like that
I feel like I should start speaking slower and slowly speeding it up because I keep tripping up and messing things up when I speak faster
also a big problem with it is my main problem in general which is not being able to come up with what else I want to say on time
yeah you're right
I might just keep it slow to get more used to the sounds
and speed it up once I'm confident I sound decent at whatever speed
@pine ginkgo That's a schwah?
wat?
That eh sound
The e and z should be doable because I can already do those, just have to remember to use them. The soft ch I can't for the life of me do, but I guess I just have to work on it (if someone has a good guide, please let me know)
And I'll just repeat this question because it might have gotten drowned out a bit: How bad is my hard ch?
very noticably
un-german
well
depends on the region
but the rest don't fit, so it's bad
:D
Haha, is there a region where they pronounce it like that?
Yeah the final -e in German is exactly a schwa as far as I know
(not sure if anyone asked but anyway 🤔 I was somewhat lazy to read)
I did, yes. Thank you
final e of what
Of a word
Yes
it should be exactly the same
at least according to the phonetic alphabet
if I remember well
Yeah I mean RP
not quite sure on that
as in
I haven't heard enough RP to know what it sounds like at the top of my head
but yeah
gonna go on a run
later
👋
Enjoy it mate
ty
I know an American with a complete RP accent and it really confused me
Did he learn it?
Dammit Daniel stop runnng so late.
I don't know but it's his normal speaking voice
Strange 😄
can I get a sentence to translate 😄
English to German, or vice versa?
Arizona, try the poem in stargazing :D
English to German @fair iron
Then I have something in mind. ^^
😄
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.```
Enjoy. :]
you don’t expect me to make it rhyme right 😅
Das ist die Extra-Challenge ;D
^
One I can’t complete 😅
All that glitters is gooold only shooting staars break the mooold.
^^ memes > poetry
The first line sounds weird to me
Allstar hadn't been written back then Ninja. The poor souls didn't know better.
I guess it has to do with Arabic having a similar line, that would translate to "Not all shiny things are gold" or something
yeah, the actual idiom is Not all that glitters is gold
Oh, felt like something was off, thanks Arizona
@fair iron
Fuck trying to make it rhyme 😅
Why is it "was" instead of a relative pronoun here?
...I typed the L and deleted it lel
@cold vessel idk exactly why, but nichts alles etc use “was” a lot
Little difference.
@fair iron naw there’s no difference to my ears
😄
maybe in british english there’s one?
Just stylistically.
Why did you translate "Shall" to "Wird"?
I get that the meaning is the same here, just wondering why
Like is there an alternative, or is it the only option
I wonder how hard it would be to make the German translation rhyme. 🤔
Depends on the rules of German when it comes to poetry
I think that I’ve heard wollen used with a bit of a future sense in a song or two, actually, and I think of that as a “shall”, like a ”will” but with more desire and intent behind it
hey luna 😄
Go teeeis, fix it
...Erneuert wird die Klinge, die gebrochen wurde...
Jetzt hör auf, vorher fehler zu machen 😠
🤔
Hallo
hallo
Aus den Aschen sollte ein Feuer erweckt sein is what I had in mind when translating
so I wanna know if it works
“of the ashes, a fire should be awoken”
yeah, that was my worry, would it be should or shall
What about "soll"?
soll is weird, I think it can translate one sense of shall, but not this one
is that to say, soll does translate this sense of “shall”?
so it's soll
wird ist aber auch okay
ok, makes sense
Es ist dann ein subtiler Unterschied?
Probably has to do with how certain you are
Soll means something like “aught to” but a bit stronger, afaik
ought*
english spelling is fun
Similar to "Shall" and "Will" in English
The difference is very subtle but it's there
soll is more like a command/compel
wird is then more like "nature"
but, uh, don't take my word on it
so in this case "wird: is a bit better
luna says soll works well for these prophecy-ish type statements
actually wait
both do
I didn’t say exclusively 😉
Cheeky as always
Casca is writing a big text 🤔
🤔
Or pretends to 🤔
maybe he’s just typing out “eistee stop trying to speak german” over and over again
Now do:
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
LoTR 😍
time to look up the official translation
I’m actually gonna try it for real tho
I wanna try it too :v
I'm giving it a shot, but I haven't seen or read LoTR so this is awfully confusing
I have 😍
Making it rhyme has been a lot harder than I anticipated.
As such, some things had to be modified a little.
Nicht alles in gold reflektiert Licht,
Noch viele müssen den Weg lern';
Das Alte, was stark ist, verdorrt nicht,
Tiefe Wurzeln vom Frost bleiben fern.
Aus den Aschen soll Feuer erschüttern,
Ein Licht aus dem Schatten geströmt;
Erneut sei die Klinge aus Splittern,
Der Kronenlose erneut sei gekrönt.```
😍
Als Farbe.
Doesn't the simile kinda break down if you're just talking about the color? 🤔
I imagine “nicht alles aus Gold” could work 🤔
I guess the point is that it looks Golden but actually isn't
I took it to mean a golden sheen, more than the metal itself.
Well, the opposite
^
^
As Ninja said.
yeah
makes sense
anywhom, I actually did the lord of the rings thing lel @cold vessel
I did too, but I'm too scared to post
The point of the poem is that Aragorn is "gold", but he doesn't "glitter"
:SSSS
Entschuldigung an alle deutsche LoTR-Fans :D
if any of this sounds even remotely like the actual German translation then oops.
Here's mine
Lord 🤔
Forgot to do a few things
Like fusing "In" with "dem"
and probably has a ton of mistakes but eh
I went to dict.cc for that, apparently "Der Lord" is a thing
so I went with it
Anyway, I'm off to bed.
Maybe it's because I've been emailing the University and the migration office a lot recently
so I connect "Herr" to a guy in an office
Good Night Casca
Herr’s also german for “Mr.” so makes sense
Lords wird im deutschen auch nur verwendet
wenn jemand auch ein Lord ist
im Deutschen gibt es keine Lords
🙇
:)
The word “mister” itself is a heavily corrupted version of “my sir” iirc, and “sir” is derived from French for “lord” afaik
Interesting
🤔
süß krypti
did u see mine 🌙 ?
yep
Not yet
@viscid cape I posted it above ninjas I’ll do it again
Last couple of days, it seems like #general-2 is more active than the main one
probably not true
but it feels like it is
so how broken is my german 😅
For fun here's the one from the German wiki:
Drei Ringe den Elbenkönigen hoch im Licht,
Sieben den Zwergenherrschern in ihren Hallen aus Stein,
Den Sterblichen, ewig dem Tode verfallen, neun,
Einer dem Dunklen Herrn auf dunklem Thron
Im Lande Mordor, wo die Schatten drohn.
Ein Ring, sie zu knechten, sie alle zu finden,
Ins Dunkel zu treiben und ewig zu binden
Im Lande Mordor, wo die Schatten drohn.
No mine is way worse than you guys' lol
yaaaay 😄
no, but they were pretty good
My heart 💔
I don’t think any of us were actually trying to make it rhyme lel
no way you could have gotten the german version
morgen
but for just a translation attempt, they were pretty good
well that's good to know
I actually got worried when some of my lines came out rhyming lel
because I wasn’t trying at all
you don't know how german poetry or lyrics are
so it's hard for you guys to translate it to sound nice
:)
In the words of a great man known as Daniel
oh no
Everything ryhmes in German
I actually somewhat do, but IDK how to make it since my german sucks
Wo I said in dem Thron 🤔 I'm stupid
Do you guys have a rule where poets are allowed to break grammar for the sake of a ryhme?
In English or German
eveywhere
In Arabic one of the first things you learn is "A poet is allowed what others are not"
