Lol seriously?
yes
The Gods Eru Ilúvatar loves the humans, though.
but he still only allowed a few humans into his lands
:D
yeah the dwarves got created by a lesser god
because he was the god of creating
and seeing the elfs
'get this this fat loud little drunk creature off my back. He's smelly.'
he wanted to make a race too
but god forbid it
but melkor whispered whispery things
and the lesser god created the dwarves in secret
(under the ground)
god kinda loves everyone
he just doesn't like people not listening to him :D
yeah :D
But if I'm ever teaching languages and someone says grammar isn't important
I tried to read the Silmarillion in German before the Hobbit and LOTRO
It's impossible
Way too many characters, way too difficult
I've just started with the Hobbit
I'll tell them if he new grammar better the witch king would've survived
the writing is kinda similar to reading biblical or historical texts
it's not really nice to read
at least the first part
Reading the Bible is torture.
Exactly, it's quite similar to the old testament
it gets better once the setting is in middle earth
At least thehistory parts
and it is actually about feanor and then the humans
Soandso begat soandso who begat soandso who begat soandso etc.
I hate feanor, he's the most arrogant, obnoxious Noldor to ever exist
And foolish
Lol @grand seal true
was it the tales of hurin or turin that got released recently as book?
Hurin
Btw I've heard of a canadian author who created a monumental fantasy series
Steven Erickson, something like that
They say it's top notch stuff
🇨🇦
i hope to read some stuff soon again
i still have to finish his dark materials
and got some other books still unread
that i got years ago
ALSO ASOIAF 6 WHEN
What's that
Waiting for The Winds of Winter since 2011 😑
"luckily" i started with the books in that year
just shortly after the first episode aired
i got the book for like 3,94€ lol
so i had a bit time before dance with dragons
but now i am amongst those, who wait
for years.
His Dark Materials 👌
@viscid cape A Song of Ice and Fire is the series of books of A Game of Thrones
@twilit garden Ohh I se, thanks... that abbreviation though
well, it is actually the series title
I read Tuf Voyaging which was nice
people kinda differentiate between talking about the books and the series by saying their respective abbrevations
though you can always say books and series
:D
How would you even pronounce ASOIAF
i don't think you do 🤔
A Game of Thrones is the first volume of the book series which makes it a bit confusing from time to time
wait, i just read that another prequel to ASOIAF is going to be released next month
WHY DOESN'T HE WORK ON THE REAL BOOKS INSTEAD????
might be painful to read
with still waiting
though i heard some of them are superb
Yeah, i have a friend who read the other prequels and he was underwhelmed
Why is it called "THE Song of Ice and Fire" in German 🤔
It is Das Lied von Eis und Feuer in German
@lavish saddle Thanks for pinging me, the cake looks great, hope your BF had a happy birthday
c: you're welcome man! He had a good one, thanks 😄
😐
-> to be continued
everything perfect, but "candles" translates best to "Kerzen" 👌
other than that, i don't see anthing
solet will find something
i posted everything i found already
maybe her honor
Thanks!
I think I'm going to keep translating random sentences I like from #general, seems like decent practice
Although is it better if I post them in #questions or #writing instead of here?
I fucking love Germany
Are you in Aachen?
oh ^^
😍
Ich liebe Franzl Lang
👌
I finally understand why my mother is so crazy
And most importantly
Y'all have Streuselbrötchen
Which gives you an automatic +10 on the love scale
what exactly do you mean with "Streuselbrötchen"?
I have two different things in my head
ok, i have never had one of those
berliner for life
A fucking scandal Nemoses holy shit
i thought you meant this
I have never even seen them before today, tim
what am i supposed to do?
That's Dutch as fuck Nemoses
You need to get yourself one of 'em and eat them with jam
hence the confusion ^^

Es sei denn du hast was zu Hause.

Oder da. ^
How do you function? ^^

They just need to send a bill for their own documents and stuff - they need to know that a book was sent to someone instead of just having disappeared.
This one was a bit tricky. Am I in the ballpark or way off?
For the first part:
Sie müssen einfach eine Rechnung für ihre eigene Dokumente und so schicken
Is that better?
I can't even identify what tense that last part is 🤔
Past.
I'm pretty lost to be honest. Does anyone have a hint, or a resource that covers whatever construct I need to use here?
In English I think I'd call it a perfect past participle if that helps.
Hammers grammar is good for weird constructions.
What's a perfect past participle
Quatsch
@opal sequoia Thank you, I will check that out in the morning
You should also probably use another word than anstelle :)
Like "having disappeared", @viscid cape
Oh, sure, past and perfect. But the perfect participle is a past tense.
Ohh I see
Someone invited me to go to the beach on Saturday
and that she had sweet potatoes to cook at the beach
but I'm going to a friend's brithday party on the same day
so I said so
and she said she'd mail him a sweet potato
is this something I should inform him about?
or would it be better for him to get a surprise sweet potato in the mail?
oh wait she said she'd send it to me to give to him i misread
makes more sense to me
Oh, in that last part it's actually pretty similar to how we'd do it in Norwegian. The English tense really confused me ...
Couple of questions:
- You changed "eigene" to "eigenen". Does it take the soft ending because "ihre" marks the gender and case?
- How in the world do I know which translations of "instead of" to use? dict.cc lists four different prepositions
anstatt
I believe anstatt and statt are functionally the same, edit: maybe not idk
@pine ginkgo In what contexts would "anstelle (von)" be used?
"Nun gehe ich zu diesem Kurs anstelle von Luna"
@torn kindle Well, there's no "die" here, but I guess my question is if "ihre" fulfills the same role, in the sense of forcing the adjective to take the soft ending intead of the hard one
@cold vessel If you said "meine eigenen Dokumente", would meine be the signifier of the gender? For ihre, or any such pronoun, it's the same.
Right, that makes sense
But then for the singular it would be "mein eigenes Dokument" because "mein" doesn't "properly" mark gender. That part is kinda hard to keep straight
Thanks for all the help with that sentence, guys 😃
well it does
if you know the case
(which we do)
if you look at the word itself, sure
but if you look at the sentence, then it's clear
@pine ginkgo Right, but I just mean compared to e.g. the definite article. It's "das eigene Dokument" because "das" "properly" marks gender
At least that's how I've seen it explained. Maybe that's not a good way of thinking about it 🤷
eh
i would just look at the case
and not the word
honestly
it's more like inferring the gender
vs stating the gender
if you look at the case
you can always find out the gender
whereas when you look at the articles and similar
you can't always do that
so i would say that's just an exception
i get what you mean anyway
but you are learning a new language
so better learn the rules for it
:)
would definitely be nice if you could just see the gender with any glance
but hey, languages
It's better to just think of the ein declinations as total exceptions since the rules all work totally consistently for the rest of the adjective/article stuff.
@pallid kelp look! Authentic sicilian pasta!
errrmm
And it even comes in a tube! Fantastic!
thats thermal paste right?
lol
zahnpasta ist auch bestimmt italienisch oder?
@sturdy shadow ich_iel
Imagine it like "his voice really is good in German"
ah yeah
Doesn't really make any sense grammatically, but that's just how it works.
No idea why

HI CHUCK
CI HHUCK.
we had to go to the town hall today because the copy of mr berzi's document was hard to read and they found out like three months after we gave it to them
but that's fine because mr berzi managed to handle the conversation all alone
That's great to hear
💪🏿
Remember that application you filed half a year ago? Yeah we finally got around to reading it and you have to do the entire thing again.
ur living in gömany?
How do you deal with the temperatures?
Must have been a real shock, coming from Sicily of all places
@thick charm not at all, it's been refreshing if anything
i escaped sicilian summer just in time
my family reported stuff like 40, even 45 °C
I guess that's one way of looking at it
I fucking hate summer
winter all the way. Today was the first day I ever went outside wearing long sleeves
its been raining the past 48 hours here 😠
germans and your cloud seeding weather manipulation...
hier auch, ab und zu
Never thought someone could genuinely like German weather
@thick charm coming from southern america where its summer nearly the entire year, cold german weather is beautiful.
gimme cute socks
I don't mind the temperatures, it's the clouds that get me.
Lack of sun just makes me depressive.
I left Germany in may, just in time to experience nice Balkan summer. But I spent it all at home and didn't get to enjoy it at all, now it's getting cold again 😦 only 32 c today 😦
yeah, rain is annoying
eh. I hate the sun
32c === cold???
only 32°C
it's getting cold
the thing is, when youre already depressed you get even more depressed
what the
if its higher than 20c I'm moaning that its too hot.
30°c is my imaginary upper limit for that.
Nah, it's not cold, but it's getting cold, lol
25°c is my perfect temperature
i never, want to experience 40-45C again
🙀
lol 30°C is when I change physical state from solid to liquid
My hometown had 42°C in 2010, ranked just below Hamburg & Berlin as the hottest German place that year.
It was like living in the desert
Nice. 👌
Looking forward to some of that in a few months.
i should have emigrated to finland or something
Urban environments are more prone to getting high temperatures in the summer, but I think you're good.
I don't think I've ever experienced 30C here
Just become rational and start enjoying the beautiful summer.
no thanks
Put dry ice in your clothes to avoid sweating
@thick charm oh god that too. Germans with their no AC and no ice in their drinks
I would die at 45C without both
I need my drinks freezing cold
Why no AC?
no idea how people don't take ice cubes in their drinks
Do they have ceiling fans?
It's just too expensive for most people
um, idk
We have a lot of fans tho
If you have fans, that's okay.
ceiling fans, normal fans, little desk fans
I mean, I don't have AC where I live even on a second floor. It's okay.
@safe yacht i beg to differ in the summer hahahaha
30C in an apartment with no AC
sweating
I never felt like I was missing it
just sitting there
You can get those coolers that you put water in.
At home now we don't even turn the ac on if it's below 35
ceiling fans are quite rare in germany
Maybe we just want to melt
Yeah. 😔
Are heat pumps uncommon in Germany? They can usually be used as AC as well
never heard of that
The big fan thing is on the outside of the house, the other thing is on the inside
Pretty much looks exactly like AC I guess
Klimaanlage?
Maybe. Looks like "Wärmepumpe" is perhaps only used in a much broader sense
They have gotten super popular in Norway because they require less power than regular electric heating
no idea how people don't take ice cubes in their drinks
more ice less drink 😠
no ice in drink
the experience of drinking the drink is degraded
I want what i paid for
heat pumps?
I thought every ac had one of those
except for those small ones that can fit in a window
@toxic urchin Yes, ACs are heatpumps
We just use that word a bit oddly in Norwegian I guess 🤷
But the point is that you can get ones that are meant for heating
But that are still able to cool, usually
The big box that's installed outside
And depending on which way you run it you can decide what place gets heated or cooled
this is a weird thing to say, but I think I'm not a polite enough person for the German language
and it seems to be cultural somehow
like people from the US have a much higher tolerance for low level impoliteness than Germans/Austrians
My girlfriend (native Austrian) always tells me that my best efforts to write polite messages aren't all that polite despite my usage of Sie and Ihnen and so on
I've never considered myself to be some sort of raging jerk or anything like that, and I've not really had the impression that others might think of me as one
It only seems that way
Because english doesn't differentiate between "du/Sie"
Dont Siez ur gf
I assume this was his gf talking about things he writes to other people
well, it's not easy to know all the more and less formal versions of many terms
thats a trick, she just wants to read everything on your phone
like how you would use möchten instead of wollen, or avoid blunt stuff like bekommen in favour of erhalten etc
Give us a gander at one of your rude notes sometime.
She hasn't read this one yet so I'm not sure what she would say about it. But the prompt goes something like: you would like to change your reservation for a rental car from a kleinwagen to a larger car. write a polite message explaining the situation and your request:
Sehr Geehrter Herr Cervantes,
Bitte rufen Sie mich an.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

my girlfriend's mother has the craziest damn sneeze I've ever heard
I wish I could predict when she was going to sneeze so that I could record it
it sounds like the war cry of some kind of harpy
my Dad is like that, but he tries to basically sneeze as loud as possible as if all must hear the greatness of his sneeze
I can't deny I have basically copied him
Why i sneeze loudly?
To assert dominance over weaker sneezers
Sometimes when I sneeze people can't tell whether or not it's actually a cough
I know that feel
Sometimes I sneeze loudly (meaning at regular volume), sometimes it's so quiet that people have commented about it. Notably, big people have done so.
The bigger you are, the louder you sneeze. Source: I am 2m man.

Also do check the correct spelling of univvererselselelensesdsnsnsnsnsnnnsn. 😉
wow that is the longuest word I have never seen in ny entire life
It's just the direct translation of "universal"
I saw that.

okay, something to think about while you eat
What case is the frog in and what case should the adjective be in
Bon appetit!
Wait I have a few minutes left. 😅
The frog is the owner of the wings, so it takes Dative.
Wait what the fuck.
Genitive.
yup
lol
The wings of the frog
Stop swearing Flops, or we'll wash your mouth with soap.
So erm, the adjective declination...
She's 14 she can swear
But I don't swear that much. 😦
If you wash her mouth with soap, I'm gonna wash yours with ethanol
And now I must eat.
You have to be at least 30 to swear.
Guten Appetit!
Are you?
Arrem is eternal
I wash my mouth with ethanol every day. But I drink it.
No. Which is why I don't swear. I'm nice and lovely.
Nobody has any idea how old Arrem is
he's been around since the day they founded Vienna

I can swear and be fancy at once. 👌
Let's go back to the translation, shall we?
👍🏻
Wait. There is genitive ending left.
I see the 2 errors left then now.
You've got this, Flappy! 😃
I think.
There is "Froschen" I think for genitive?
And the declination which is errr
Universellen?
Why Froschen?
^
🤔
Did I think wring about the genitive ending?
Wait.
Why did I add a n. It's either "s" or "-es".
Frosches? 🤔
The whole sentence?
Yeah, as they said I have found all the errors
And will turn B in a few days make progress
Whole sentence, yes.
Write down the whole sentence with all corrections! :P
^
I hope I didn't forget any.
one tiny thing
wow i can't anymore
You already had it
🤔
You forgot to apply the correction for one word... :P
I took the wrong ending, tell me.
yup

Flops, you said it yourself. You don't add -en in genitive.
And then you proceeded to add -en in genitive.
Now: The whole sentence with ALL corrections! :D
Hiseskameme.
Sparrem!

Heyo Seska!

Wow, Donald.
So you only took about 50 minutes for this one. Progress!

🙍
So Horsielad, give us the 'next one'. 😛

I think he means that Flappy needs to solve the next one in five minutes
Not that he's going to come up with one
And I'll stay C1 in English even if I feel I am more B2 now. 😛
Even if I do stupid mistakes I can even see by myself. 😦
I know what he meant. But I'm telling him that he should think of one. 😛

Interesting question.
I'm so sorry
Ah. Let me check on Google then...
lol
And she was never heard of again
Hallo. :3

Hallo Kryptik
-pats Foxy-
uwuauwa
👌
Anyway, now that I know...
In german, plow does not have that definition :P
Pflüg mich, Baby
chuck baby
Die Hühner pflügen im Hof
Die Pflüge hühnern im Hof
Die Höhner höhnern wieder
Die Höfe pflügen im Huhn
I was hoping for a translation of it, so I can add more of such words to my databanks
But wait, "his ground plow"
It doesn't sound good
He plows with his plow the ground
better.
uh...
🤔
I know I wasn't here before and all, but this is a weird conversation, I must admit.
Tja Kryptik. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
LOL
Technically speaking He plows the ground with his plow sounds the best. But I wouldn't translate Feld as ground. Did you just assume the meaning? 😛
go finish it, flupflep
Don't tell me it was the only mistake?!
not saying a word about it until it's correct
I don't think she'll figure it out on her own. Should we at least point out where the mistake is? 🤔
you are allowed to help, arrem
I must go again for 20 mins. Don't count 'em for tranlsating time.
Oke. Flops, while damit can mean hence in certain situations, it's nowhere near hence in this case. 😛

I have to prepare a 5 minutes presentation in German 2 weeks from now
I'll send you guise the slides once they're ready

what is it about?
you send us the recording of your presentation
Some examples of damit being used in the same way as here:
Er geht nach Hause, damit er seiner Mutter helfen kann.
Sie isst EichelKäse, damit sie stärker wird.
Solet will mich bannen, damit er endlich in Ruhe memen kann.
I need to pick a theme related to my area of studies, I don't know what yet exactly
@pine ginkgo I would, but nobody will be recording :v
Faulenzen ist ein gutes studienrelevantes Thema x)
Aww, did I miss a translation
I think she died.
what is your area of studies?
Der andere: 'I Kant!'
Philosophy. 👌
Why don't you just pick a cool German philosopher and talk about that?
I kan't think of german philosophers :(
That's what I'll do
It'll be bad though.
It's always bad when I open my mouth

Today I finished reading one of Philip Dick's short stories in German
Really cool, I loved it
Haha he said Dick.
@whole rapids Probably will have to answer questions, and I don't have a script yet, I was informed yesterday about the presentation
😂
I am bak.
So "damit" is not "hence" in that context.
mmmh
In order that animals can eat quickly?
We could just have used "um...zu" then...
you cannot
not can you
a detail you probably don't know, but "um ... zu" is for when the subject doesn't change
;w;
along the right lines
waht do you mean exactlysfasfa
Well, I try to translate the sentence, maybe it's "that way they can eat quickly"
there is a one word variant for "that way"
🤔
I have no idea at all ;w;
🤔
🤔
What's the sentence again?
GE -> EN.
Cool
So, what is your translation currently?
Dat damit though
No idea what flugs is though
nor I until Luna wrote it
A horse plows the field with his plow, hence the animals can eat quickly.
well, you know that "hence" is wrong
so quickly?
so how would you change it?
It's not in order to, nor that...
when you can't use "in order to" in English, what do you use?
that sorta works but also not really
There's a synonym to 'damit' that is very close to the English expression you're looking for
Is it a word or an expression with several words?
word
Hoyl only a word.
I'm thinking of two words 🤔
I was about to say nevertheless
"I am leaving now, in order to get home quickly."
But that can't be it.
what if I wanted to say me and someone else want to get home quickly?
Huh? I didn't understand.
in my sentence, in English, the subject is always me
Yeah?
what if in the next clause, I wanted a different subject
you can't use "in order to", so what else?
He's right, the reason why you can't use damit is that the subject has changed
Mmmh.
That word can't come to my mind, and when I'll see it I'll feel dumb because I maybe know it.
I used it in my previous sentence, except in a different sense
Let me list a few synonyms of damit
Maybe it'll ring a bell
damit, hiermit, hierdurch, sodass, hierbei, dadurch
Look for something that sounds similar to English
or, fill in the missing word:
"I am leaving now, [word] we can get home quickly."
So?
So + ...?
So that way?
no just "so"
"so that" works as well
yes you did
Oh, it's another one?
Is my suggestion wrong? 🤔
you did say that
I said that and so that too.
yes you did
and one of those doesn't work
In English I don't know what the rules would be, maybe you can only use so that
damit works with different subjects
Let talk the native, he seems skeptical.
or what are you on about?
mhh
like for sodass and damit, the subjects being the same or different
doesn't matter at all
you meant Finalsätze?
evidence deleted
sowieso, was ist deine Übersetzung jetzt denn, Flaps?
😂
0ps
🤔
denn jetzt
A horse plows the field with his plow, so that the animals can eat quickly.
Woah wait.
a hopeful order, no idea if that would work lol
I'll seriously stop trying to explain stuff, I'm just making others more confuse 😂
nah m8
even if you make mistakes 20% of the time, 80% of the time you are providing useful information
so negative
In my case it's uuuuh.
internalise your negativity and fake confidence, like the rest of us
Don't say a single word unless you're 110% completely certain like you'd bet your life on it that it's correct.
anyway I think your sentence is right now, Flaps, but probably better to wait for the native to confirm
although I'd translate it with "plough" because Britishness, bestness
Jk. 😄
i let base decide
Seems fine to me.
well, if we were being picky...
I don't think we call an animal by a male/female gender unless we know its gender
but whatevas
she wrote, "his plow"
true
true
good pferd
What would you say for a neuter animal then, Pferd?
yum
"its plow"
Oh, its in English, I see.
French habit there whoops
yeah
I thought you meant the German.
yeah, I meant the translation
i was confused a bit as well :D
Well, to be fair though, it's normal in English to use his for unknown gender of animals.
As in, either is normal.
I never do that personally.
I don't know how common it is to do it one way or another.
Both are very common.
So @ocean robin. Some of the following sentences can be converted to the um..zu form. Identify and convert them or we shoot ur dogger.
owo
Perhaps similar to how unknown people can be referred to as the singular "they", which I subscribe to
"Base kockt, damit Arrem essen kann" wat okay
No he most certainly doesn't kock.
heh

kochen != kocken
typo which actually comes back everytime
be nice if it was a word (or is it)?
