i would want to experience it one day regardless
i love flying it's amaing
amazing
oh yeah i wanted to aerospace engineer before. Still kinda do but I'm gonna start and complete a Bachlor in Physics then I'll decide if I want to master in aerospace engineering or something else
haha hell yeah
im in my 4th year for aerospace engineering
might go fro my masters we shall see
yeah it starts once you do the big projects later on i believe. aerospace engineering is significantly more complex than the basics like mechanical or electircal engineering for example (they're easier to learn, difficult to master. aerospace eng is difficult to learn and master)
so it takes more time until you get to the good stuff
im at the good stuff
i've learned quite a lot
first two years suck ass i will tell you that
haha first 2 years is basically the same as mechnical engineering i believe
yeah also i wouldn't necessarily say ME is too much easier than AE
i've seen both sides
i'm in my 4/5 years because i was an ME
(with an AE minor)
what i really mean is, AE produces less successful students, but the successful students are really successful. ME produces more successful students, but they can range from mildly successful to really successful.
ohh
eh with bachelors it doesn't matter as much you you'd think
true
your 'specialization' isn't too unique
that's why i'm going for physics bsc.
it will let me choose virtually any masters after i'm done
i'm basically stuck between aerospace eng, astrophysics and quantum eng
they're all equally fascinating to me. i have to wait and see how each of their communities feel like through learning a bit of each in general physics
i understand that entirely
STEM has so much to offer it's hard to pick just one thing
i chose AE because i simply love aircraft
so it edged out a little more than the rest
yeah its mostly the guys who had a very successful project in highschool who know exactly which stem specilization to get in lol. i had to quit highschool early on and study alone to save costs so yeah
thats awesome man i wish you plenty of success and fulfillment in it
thanks! we'll see how it works out lol
interessant
Back to general one
Haha
@chrome flower

if you want to build bad habits, yes then it definitely doesn't matter ^^

Dutch people maybe can
You‘d get Bayernverbot

yup
Where you are born doesn’t mean that’s your citizenship or country of residence.
You could have been born in Germany, got an American citizenship, gotten a French citizenship and optionally renounced your American citizenship.
I've retook a test from 4 months ago and from 55% improved to 66% is that efficient or non-efficient?
Depends on your effort
Depends on effort? Depends on EVERYTHING

Ist das eine Art KI?
Is that how one says "Art artificial intelligence"?
Kunst Künstliche Intelligenz sounds equally strange as it does in English lol
Eine Art der KI
Ja!
Die Art bedeutet nicht die Kunst!!
Have you tried that in German? 🤣
Hi i have a question, isnt there a language that it's considered a funny version of deutsch ?
As a swiss myself i'm upset
/jk
i dunno , i thought there was a language like german but with funny accent
lol
That's arguably Dutch. Can you be any more specific?
Swedish, dutch, swiss german, austrian
danke
Art bedeutet "kind" auf English
a kind of AI
eine Art KI
swiss german isn't funny :(
yes it is
no
yes
What about Alien German?

My comment has to do with burn out.
Es geht
goes in my brain and falls right out
Nice
need to practice, the most boring part of learning anything, but for german i don't find it tedious
türkisch
Fick aus?
Verpiss dich
ah thanks dude
not sure if it has the same effect in German, but that's hilarious in English
du gesäßöffnung!
It's the c1 level of saying fuck off
In a formal way
Urinieren Sie sich hinfort
It's elegant in a way, far more refined than the pirate curses we have available to us in English
hallo
hallo
Hey can someone help me please v
Wouldn’t the C1 way just be saying it English because that’s the level when you finally realise most Germans refuse to use German

Nein nicht wirklich
I was kidding xD
Very new to learning another language, what does c1 mean?
It refers to a level of language proficiency
Basically there’s A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 (A1 being “just started” level and C2 being like “well-read native” level)
English uses the same system actually
In my experience most random natives in a language are closer to C1 than C2
Oh thank you!
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, abbreviated in English as CEFR, CEF, or CEFRL, is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and, increasingly, in other countries. The CEFR is also intended to make it easier for educational institutions and em...
If it helps
danke
I would be either A2 or B1 according to that
def cap dawg
true tho if ur level aint up to par
but if it is u goo i hea
mdr
?
Kannst du gut Deutsch sprechen?
C1 could only apply to uneducated people who can't speak properly and do grammar mistakes, or who mostly grew up with a dialect and left school early. With a short training to know how the exam works, natives pass C2 with 0 problem.
I’ve looked at C2 English exams and there are words in it that natives literally never use
Like, ever
Lots of literary stuff
You used them in school. The French C2 looks like a high-school/end of middle school exam to me
Same for Goethe C2. I couldn't pass because of mistakes but it's not super hard
Capricious, cogent, didactic, fastidious, nebulous, ubiquitous, ostensible
These are all C2 words
All French words
I think most natives wouldn’t have the foggiest clue what they mean
No one says them lol
Ok cogent I don't know
I used the French equivalents in essays
But they're not that special in French I don't have English native experience
To me if you used any of these words in English you’d sound like you’d have to wear three monocles and four top hats at once if you wanted anyone to understand your level of intelligence

My native friends who are English majors would get lost with those words tbh
Didactic is theme specific but yes I can't imagine a person who didn't study using those words in the daily life but they still know what it means and know how to used them because they've been to school
Then again I only know France
I grew up in Australia and we definitely didn’t hear/use any of those words once
Even Shakespearean English didn’t really use them
The words are just too big
Maybe it's british English 🤔
Perks of being a native speaker of a Romance language
I would definetly use them because of how close they are to French. Let me grab my monocle
CEFR does not merely encompass the viability of apt understanding ie recollection of appellations but recognizes the essential implementation of cohesion, which is important to distinguish @merry inlet
I asked my mum about them actually (who was brought up in England) and she honestly did better than me
But even then she only knew like two of them
half these most know
either way like i said its not merely a matter of the individual here
Esl?
English as a second language
Non-natives, basically
Like the French and German people who I know (who’ve seriously studied English) tend to have a much better understanding of complicated literary words, simply due to cognates
Oh yeah those would struggle. I had natives with native parents in mind. Though some people manage to still develop a large vocabulary even then
Language is a matter of not not knowing something but knowing that which one does perfectly (ie natively)
in regards to natives and CEFR
For English speakers who were brought up by English speakers who only know English I think most would be stumped by the words I posted
I’ll die on this hill xD
Even if they had a faint idea on them I doubt they’d be confident at all
Which is probably enough to fail C2 imho
but can make out words whispered to them during a movie while kids are being loud and also understand the movie 100%, 100% be able to explain their thoughts about the movie
Yes I felt like I went from B1 to whoosh C1 because the "smart" vocab is just French. But I do sound weird because I'll prefer "equilibrum" to "balance" for example
Équilibre ^^
The real difference works parallel to how language works. Your brain is already operating ahead of what you are going to think or say or hear
I like it
Oh forgot an i
in german?
a lot is also english soundin 😂
"famose" wörter
German no
And just German sounding too
The French words are not 1:1 the same
Sorry that joke was terrible
Yee
either way point is all natives will have this ability that a learner wont
unless learnt to high level
Even then it can prove tricky
I'm surprised no one did a video about natives passing a C2 exam
Though maybe it means it's non-interesting
Here to make it clearer
I feel like in Germany the teaching of German is a bit more conscious than with English in the UK or the US
And I've seen c2 tests for both languages
Where a native may lack in ignorance towards certain words ("c1, c2 words) they make up in what is rarely immitated by non-natives (slang understanding, ability to mumble and understand mumble, native accent, etc) @merry inlet
THAT is why CEFR is not equatable to natives
I was thinking about that too. I've met British people who were being very rude to their language.
It is just something that measures different competences
Imagine a C2 speaker and an A1 speaker repeat the same sentence but the C2 has a noticeable accent and the A1 speaker somehow perfectly replicates a native accent. the A1 speaker will sound more advanced
Fair
Also hard tests have little tolerance for dumb mistakes yeah
Opulent
Kontinuerlich
Dekadenz
Annexion
Despot
Nivellieren
Euphorisch
Vage
Kontraproduktiv
Sporadisch
🤔
thought she meant in french or smth cuz i could name a fuckton in german
Ok those would all match I think
there are even more that are even beter
The grammar isn't too hard. I never had to sit down and do exercises (or maybe in school) + easily accessible content
Easy as in it's interesting I don't have to convince myself it is
Really? Lucky
I mean the article usage is certainly quite different to other European languages from what I can tell
Plus the prepositions are a bit strange at times
ion even finna gotta say to ya tha da vowels don aways fin gott be ther yano? den dey done be movin dat gramma shi roun
Yeah just find stuff you're interested in
Clearly spoken sentences are always a bonus, but mostly you have to enjoy yourself doing it because it will take a bit @merry inlet
I listened to thousands of hours worth of gaming videos from some guy from Florida who used fairly complex structures in his everyday language
There are some tricky things but you can get them pretty fast. Not like German where you're still learning genders, cases, etc with C1
Nah lol
I mean I dunno why you get on a bus, on a plane but in a taxi, in a car
And with a helicopter I think you could even say both?
And “generic/unknown information = indefinite article” doesn’t work because even if you got on a random unknown train you’d say “on the train”
cant be c1 and learnin tha stuff
The grammar just doesn’t make sense to me lol
That would insinuate that natives are learning it and that would be cheeky
I don't mean the principle of it but making mistakes
Depends
I know what I’d say because I’m a native speaker but if I wasn’t a native speaker I’d be like wtf this makes no sense
Can't compare learners and natives on that
Your ability to speak German first gets defeated by grammatical genders, then when you've given up it gets even worse and you're effectively a level or two down and confused

but yes let me say that you right with this: the b, even c levels here make mistakes daily in german. i have never seen this level of mistakes from learners of english on that level. the b levels in english servers make mistakes few times a week not a day
in a general sense
Aah I would argue with that. Learners make plenty of mistakes in English
Still not as much of a problem as German. With B2 you makes proper sentences without doubting with C1 in German you feel like you're still B1
Haha
Not that the level of other languages tho
Even with my B1 spanish I doubt less ^^
Its not really arguable
I mean ive seen people who learnt another foreign language BEFORE english and make less mistakes in english than the other language despite speaking it longer
Yup I noticed the same. I probably put 400% less effort into learning English and it's way better than my German
I mean it's difficult to get a reliable reading of someone's level, usually - so it's not like our data can be anything but anecdotal (unless you're an actual English teacher in highschool or something)
all the people on my georgian server i dont think ive ever even seen a mistake in english lmao
Hallo
well ive been on da language cord for 6 years and done taking over 30 lang classes its just what ive seen from people irl and internet
although french people cannot spell their language for any reason
I think a good example is also that we can have a convo in English with a lot of learners and it is fluid. Try in German, soon people switch to English or ask what this or that means.
Yeah I'm not saying everyone makes mistakes all the time
But people who are actively trying to improve, which is who you usually find in question channels, will make mistakes quite a bit more often
My German is abysmal 🙄
C1 speakers make C1 mistakes though. In German we still see A2 mistakes
Das stimmt
Are you native?
i think basically real reason is that the average english learner has 1. put more effort and or has had (usually wayyy) more exposure to english and 2. has been learning longer
I studied German for 9 years total with fairly good teachers and I was putting quite a bit effort at times, just burned out in the end
Uni level grammar got me
Then again take a Russian community learning German and the experience will be different
wdym uni level grammar
I meant English native
Ok
B2 till C1 with some detours into academic German, with demanding profs
I wish I had had German courses after A2
My course had 50/50 English German split in the number of hours
uni reaches mostly high b1
You probably are good with grammar and just need practice
English was smooth sailing and German killed my passion for the language
They told use we would study C1 in uni
(English)
well theres few grammar to learn at c1
No like
If I was so inclined, I could write my BA in German
Some people did
its just that almost zero non natives with no contact to germany, etc actually speak german higher than b1
We started at b1 on day one
its vvvvv hard so it jus cant be expected
There's just too much grammar in German lmao
I'm still learning B1/B2 grammar and you can't put me in a B2 group because I'd get bored
Ok B1 is maybe exaggerated
I swear, each word demands it
The level of effort that is required to reach b2 and c1, you have to be crazy in the head to willingly put it forth
Kinda
dank big boi absent er hat meine schmerzen erlöst
I'm 99% sure I pass C1. If I were making that many mistakes in English I'd pass B2

It depends what we mean by reaching a certain level
Objectively you either are or are not
If I practised for like 100-300 hours, I'm easily b1 again in speech and writing
If you want to match the CEFR descriptions good luck yeah
So you reach once you are actually there
But with comprehension it would be far higher
No such thing as being in between
And for second/third languages people often focus just on language comprehension
100h that's about a month, bit too short for B1
They are not nearly realistic enough, doesnt go hard enough
I find them hard enough. (Not talking about the exams)
I mean I was supposed to be C1 after my BA so
In your opinion natives are B2
Lol
If a c1 speaker were to have a perfect native like accent they would in most cases be perceived as a native speaker
Also, it definitely does vary
i have seen this emulated in real life and am very firm that this is the c1
Nah they would do too many mistakes
I met someone WITH an accent where i sometimes forgot she wasnt a native speaker
in english
if she had no accent absolutely would sound native
Learners under B1 think I'm native but you won't fool a high level
point is they wouldnt
thats where i disagree with most people on c1
German in research papers is quite different from everyday German, as far as learning it goes
Yes there are many competences. There is no such thing as being in between CEFR levels is what I mean
You can have better X than X
I'm not sure it's about the accent, more about the pronunciation. In French we have many accents, if someone pronounces everything right + makes no mistakes I'll assume they're a native speaker from another region of the world
Well yeah if that's what you mean by that then sure
I don't like cefr levels anyway
If you are A2-B1 then how are you not just B1 )
is my point
Then you say well my "X" is "A2"
Then you cant possibly be b1...
☹️
i mean that with accent too
i just mean whichever way u sound sounds native and not foreign how ever different
like southern american vs northern
If you wanted to make me a politician and gave me ready made answers for everything, I could fool people into thinking my German is fine
You can because there are different skills. I can read with 0 problem now because I have a large vocabulary, but I didn't train speaking that much so I can't actively use it. Still my reading isn't B2
idk theres always a pronounciation issue probably
If you don't need a certain competence, should it count into your level?
If you can't read
And are a native German speaker
You're still native level, but just can't read
But im talking about non - natives )
usually only in heritage sitauations and in heritage situations the speaker is almost never as good as a normal native speaker
sonst wärn sie muttersprachler

Lol
I've been reading a random book series lately
So one character was born in Russia, wrote and spok Russian
Happened to go to Germany in 1941 <🙈>, learned German
Then went to the UK and learned English
You can easily learn a language without being able to write in it
And at the same time be able to do that in another foreign language
And knowing the spelling of only some random words doesn't mean you are fluent in it
I think when mister Smith evaluates your level they mostly focus on your speaking skills
Well yeah
CEFR measuers all skills ..
Those CEFR exams are only there to give you a paper so you can study.
Yes, basically how much do you understand, how well can you express yourself
And is it fluid enough for native speakers or do you feel the distance between both language skills.
Hallo
Hallo
Gude!
How did he manage to go to Germany in 1941
Anyone here familiar with the Anneliese Michel exorcisms?

I'm going to be doing the final part of my German exam tomorrow morning, after that I'll be leaving to focus on my Mandarin studies. This is the last time I'll talk, I just want to say thank you all for the fun times, it's really brightened up my months spending time with this wonderful community. I hope it remains this friendly and fun for the years to come and am very grateful to everyone for making it such a welcoming place to be in.
Many thanks especially to the moderators for always keeping the server free of trolls and toxicity, I'm also grateful for all the patience in dealing with my reports and stupidity. ||Thank you for the advice by the way, I really appreciate it and I'll try my very best to improve.||
Best of luck to you all with everything, ~~especially to Arrem with finding better pupils, mother truly deserves so much better.

Good bye. 🫂
can I ask yall a kind of dumb question?
What do you guys use as like vocab sheets and conversations? I remember in hs there was this teacher who taught us french with these like packets of vocab and I just remember learning it like pretty fast from the conversational pieces and vocab but I cant find it for german T^T
Do you know what quizlet is
But also when you memorize words make sure to also take note of the article it helps you later
Everyone to me also suggested anki
Tschüss, we will miss you
I think so, isnt it like that flashcard study app or sum
Viel Glück!
Yep it’s handy but anki is better it’s just paid

<@&305455824174710787>
Mate, people here agree with you however this is not the time or place for such discussions or statements
Can you apologize? Not for how you feel but for disrupting the environment
Yes
Being obnoxious to other people will only further stray them from your cause
Hi how are you
Im ok
ah, well, that's something i suppose
🤔 i should get around to talking to some classmates (Kommilitonen = other people in university) when we want to meet. i've been asked to help some people because the prof in that class does everything really quickly and they can't quite keep up. one of them said we could do that over the weekend or next week, rumour has it tomorrow will be the weekend then, innit
Just curious are you Israeli?
Yes
This is just a side note but, I hope that peace is near in the future for your people
But no politic here
Go to the politics channel 🙄
There’s a politics channel?
Yeah
huh
Well
sensitive-topics channel
Go to id:customize
and scroll down and select 'sensitive topics' role
and you'll get access to it
This topic is also banned there
I feel like it shouldn’t be, because it needs to go somewhere. And silencing both sides is inappropriate when people are dying on both sides of the conflict for equally sad reasons.
You can dm me
Shore
This is a language learning server, there are plenty of other servers on the internet you can talk about that topic.
For once I actually agree with Rin
So the conflict doesn’t affect people learning languages?
Rin can I post some FNAF "bruh" GIFs at MadMase?
So the purpose of this server is to learn German.
No.
😢
Wait I’m confused what you mean by this
This isn’t really responding to what I said at all
Well it is
Not really
well it is
lol
My point is, you can talk about that topic elsewhere. Here is a place to learn the German language. Our moderators are already busy with all sorts of trolls. It isnt possible to keep an eye on political conversation which guarantee conflicts between the users and can get ugly very fast. If you have any further questions about this you should consider to use #report-issue and talk to a moderator directly.
are you a moderator?
No; I am not.
See? English native

How many mistakes?
I can't believe this. I need a second opinion.
Ohhhh
So? The purpose of this server is to learn German.*
Ok fair enough
“So?” is not an appropriate reply to what you sent imho
average English native speaking German: mir geht es gut und du?
average German speaking English:
It doesn’t make sense
You misunderstand
Wasn't my intention. Yup.
Please Rin I want to send GIFs at MadMase so badly
I was putting punctuation in their sentence so it makes sense to me
So? Is a proper response to what I said beforehand
😭
I think that doesn't fit what I wanted to say.
Rin’s sentence was fine to me 🤷♂️
The "So?" Sounds provocating to me.
I’d agree, it’s generally pretty rude
I agree, since esper agrees
Were you trying to type a two part sentence?
Thank you, I will ask my native friend about it.
No worries.
that's what I was thinking hahah
Personally as a native English speaker I honestly would’ve said it like Rin did
It made perfect sense to me
MadMase was just trying to get their own back on Rin for telling them to stop talking about politics here
But failed, because Rin's English is perfect
We both know your English isn't the yellow from the egg.
@tepid shard 🤡 🎪
We can drop that topic now.
Rezenou you seem to put words in my mouth that I did not say, and if I wanted to be rude it would be more explicit and I wouldn’t have apologized and clarified
While I’m sure Rin appreciates the compliment please don’t bait other users into fights
This.
I wasn't the only one that saw it 😭
If you want to further discuss this do it in DMs. I have no hard feelings.
hey, don't pull me into this😬
I'm just a bystander
😠
We should settle this once and for all by banning Ephemere.
Anyway it's Friday night, what did everyone have for dinner???
damn
Best is I just leave.
Nuuuuu
Nooo 😭
I wrote one perfect sentence, I archived my goal. Thats why I came here.
achieved* I think you meant (tho that was probably a typo lol)
archived, in what archive did you archive it
Damn. Seems I have to stay a little bit longer.
My phone keeps autocorrecting aufräumen to ausräumen and ausräumen to aufräumen and Germans seem to love correcting me on that one every single time
I always hit enter with the wrong one typed in
Ehehehe... I feel that. Mine loves to switch between English and German.
xD
Mine does the same! It wants to capitalise every single English noun now
Kind of frustrating
how about just not using auto-correct like a civilized person?
*civilised
I'm being silly hehe
Just write in German. You will make less mistakes.
I think my German is genuinely better than my English
Which is tragic
I don't make mistakes when writing in English... only when writing in German, cough|| der scham @merry inlet ||
I always pick weird unidiomatic expressions in English for some reason
And then awkwardly go back and fix them
I’m not so used to doing that in German
||you mean you're not so used to noticing it in German||
I'm kidding
xD
I mean probably true to an extent lol
But I think less people give a shit in German so it’s a bit easier to get away with
we don't have that many MadMases in German, true
German has so many unclear points (especially in relation to gender) that what’s natural and what isn’t gets blurred really quickly in my experience
I read a linguistic article today written by a native speaker and he admitted that he got the gender of Genus wrong and had to retroactively fix it for the entire article
Because even he wasn’t sure
He wrote “der Genus” like 50 times
das geschlecht - das Genus
that's how I think about it
"der" doesn't sound "wrong" with that word either though
Yeah he mentioned that maybe a local dialect was interfering
Is it true that Apfelschorle gets treated as all three genders depending on region? I read something mentioning that at one point
And have found no sources stating or mentioning that since
I only use "die" with it
Same.
I think it said “die” was the standard one and it was either der or das in the South or something? Can’t remember
Something weird
Interesting, Wiktionary mentions 2 versions but no masculine one
Hmmm
And different plurals 👀
If you are native you can make up your owen rules. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
lmao
Das Nutella.
It’s hilarious to me when natives correct each other on articles because they disagree on one word
Just a war of them correcting each other over and over again

See, that is why I write English here. No German corrections. :]
LOL
Did you know Saft is neutral in the Netherlands
Well it’s “sap” over there but yea the gender changes for some reason apparently
Kinda weird
Wait is the adjective neutral or neuter in English
Crap
It’s so stupid they sound so similar
neutral neuter neutrum
It’s almost like some language-making dude wanted to confuse as many people as possible
I made an even more embarrassing mistake recently
I said “backery”
😬
bakery, Bäckerei -> backery
Eurgh
bäckery
This tbh.
I want to say the same.
xD
“Wow the sunne is so bright”

“There are lots of tears at the zoo.”
“Do people hate it that much?”
Be it German or English, both languages are fairly easy to study
German > Chinese > English
English > German > Chinese
