@Maskinkultur Sorry for replying this late. So if you want to try some more or less unknown dishes, here's a short list for you:

Labskaus (a weird beef/fish/potato/beet dish, served in northern Germany)
Since you guys are big on weird fish stuff (-> Surströmming, yuck^^), I thought this would be a great start. This channel, in general, has a lot of good recipes you can go nuts on, very recommended.

Currywurst (basically just sausage with ketchup and curry. More of a dish of Berlin, but very popular throughout Germany)

What might be a good idea is to read the easy reader version so you know what's going on then have a crack at the original version, using what knowledge you have about each scene to try and intuit what unknown words mean

Turn the verb into it's noun equivalent and pop the preposition in front
E.g. Bevor ich ankomme, esse ich Keks
That becomes
Vor meiner Ankunft esse ich Keks
ankommen means arrive and die Ankunft means the arrival.

Breakng that down
[Wenn ich esse], [werde ich Krank]
The clause with the subjunction in it gets reduced to preposition + noun, and the comma dissapears.
If there's an object in the clause with the subjunction then that can be expressed in a couple ways but von + noun is a normal way.
Wenn ich Keks esse, werde ich Krank.
Beim Essen von Keks werde ich krank.
