For now I'd just announce something like "haha swiss german look below for detailed info" and post the message yourself and I'll deploy a fix for it tomorrow.

Hey everyone! I am going to hold a series of weekly classes on Swiss German, starting next week. These classes will be in German and aimed at people who already have a decent grasp on German (Level B1 and upwards, natives are of course very welcome). For more details see the next message.

Hi everyone! Beginner German: Lesson 5 will begin in around 25-30 minutes.
Today we'll be talking about dative declension, as well as the differences between accusative and dative, and a few useful points related to that. We won't be covering prepositions in any detail, but I'll mention a few basic points about them. In a later session, we'll talk about specific prepositions and how they work.
This session is aimed at beginners, but anyone is welcome to join and listen.

You don't need to finish anything, as long as you understand the concepts. Although even if you don't, or even if some people weren't here for some sessions, it's not a big deal. We can discuss stuff that people want to go over again.
But just as a note to people: I'm a bit tired today so if I feel like I can't do a long session, we might have to leave some of the questions for next week. We'll see how it goes though. 😄
I don't have much brain power today
I'll just watch, I promise 👍 😋

It'd be a great idea if there was a way you could record these classes, they're so valuable for us beginners 🥳 👍 🙏 👍
There are already homework assignments
@robust jolt @flat wave I prefer not to record them currently, because if people want to try speaking or something, I don't want them to feel pressured by being recorded. I might think about a way to do this in future, but for now it's just for people who choose to attend.
Good point Mr! I haven't thought about it 😋 👍
How do i join this lesson?
Join the lessons voice channel
Subscribe lesson and join the lesson vc.
Yeah, just join Lessons VC and I will be there in a moment.
You don't need to subscribe to lessons.
You only need to subscribe to get pings, not to join the VC, I mean.
Im already subscribed hehe

@wary atlas Oh, I know. I just want to 😄 I've printed all the material and will get to it probably tomorrow. I have to say that during the lesson I didn't understand it much but now I do after going through all of the stuff again 🙂
yep

I have done 2 of them
der Freund > die Freunde > den Freuden?
no
How to tell an object used accusative or dative in a sentence?
Freund* yep sorry fixed.

😔 Rip in peace genative
for indefinite articles, doesnt keine mean no?
oop my food is here
keine means nope i think
I think ^nein^is no
this is all so confusing to me
Kein = no. for example: Keine Äpfel, no apples
if you say like, "no idea"
Keine Idee
Keine Ahnung
yeah Keine Ahnung
Nein! ich hab' keine ahnung!
A* no?
wdym?
tut mir leid
capitalize the nouns
oh yea
So master the der die das change first
sounds a bit capitalist ngl
does anyone know of an app that has this kind of repetition for dative/accusative/etc?
whats that
is there anything for beginners?
That gives me some time to catch up 😄
need some practices
So In German you dont need to say "TO".. Just "The man give the book the mother" 😄
Oh, yes you're right.
is this a general rule? i.e. is the indirect object always dative? And the direct always accusative?
does this hold for plurals?
give the balls to the dogs?
ok
my food took me away from learning
trinkt sie?
Ich liebe dich
Ich trinke das wasser.
Ich gebe dem wasser dich.
As a reminder, these are verbs that can take a dative object even without an accusative object or a dative preposition. (See V.13 for more.) The best way to remember them is a short phrase with a dative pronoun or … Continue reading →
Ich trinke das wasser.
Ich gebe dem wasser dich.
@graceful island
*Ich gebe dir das wasser
ach oop
haben, nehmen, essen, fragen, trinken, brauchen etc
I enjoy giving people to water tbh
German is so complicated 😩
is Germany even a real place
nein
its all 🇫🇷
only Bielefeld doesn't exist
Das discord Kurs gefällt mir.
I’m really envious of German people because they were born with German language, like the hardness is already set up in their brains
so is it things like the/his/her that change based on dative/accusative?
Why do you say the coffee first in German?
noone would say "der kaffee gefällt mir" as a native german
rip
oof
the subject is "you" right?
more something like u said before "ich mag kaffee" oder "der kaffee schmeckt mir gut"
seems off

"The coffee pleases me"
lol
"_ pleases me"
"Der BMW gefällt mir"
Bases kurse gefällt mir
nein
like if u went to a theater or you watched a movie then a natural way to say u liked it would be "der film hat mir gefallen"
in this case the whole sense would change
like u said here "the coffee fell down"
Instagram uses Gefallen. its really wierd
Ah
"gefallen" is for pleasing looking things
The feeling of this coffee in me deeply pleases me.
The same idea applies in Italian actually
ah
and not if somehting tastes good
but coffee is something that tasted good to him
Wie gefällt dir das Essen?
only Bielefeld doesn't exist
so the verb be [to be aesthetically pleasing]?
meine Freundin gefällt mir
Gut
its not wrong in a way but feels like or talking to a weirdo imo
i dont like coffee
Its the same as
"This pleases me"
vs
"I like this"
Context
uhh gefallen sounds like, very weird for food
hahahaha cheonshi
thank god its short its 3 am xd
It was a great one really
practices
mir ist = in my opinion?
o.o

Meiner Meinung nach ist Maple, Base, und Bulli sind cool.
are these people trolling?
i think they are
not anymore 😉
i will save him
@severe sedge @boreal zealot We're doing a lesson at the moment.

i just muted them on my end
sorry
the fast hand of deutschen banhammer has reachen their shores
Will anyone make fun of me if i conjugate be in a very simple sentence???
danke
ich bin schön!
Facts vs feelings?
@graceful island ist sind
sorry, is Meiner Meinung nach also a form of I am? Or was that an asside that had nothing to do with this?
oh i see
Ich bin hungrig
ich bin langweilig -> Im boring
Mir ist langweilig -> Im bored
like this?
sorry, is Meiner Meinung nach also a form of I am? Or was that an asside that had nothing to do with this?
@scarlet breach in my opinion
@scarlet breach in my opinion
ok so it's a special case?
Meiner Meinung nach gefällt der Kaffee mir gut
idk someone asked
this is a good slide
du bist cool?
it's really helping
Ich bin high and Mir ist high would those be the same as drugged and altitude?
👀
How to say I’m bored
yeah taht's good
am i the only one connecting "langweiling" to "long + waiting" and being bored, therefore
@mild canyon "Ich bin high" only
@mild canyon Ich bin high = im stoned in german no other meaning to this noone would think u are at an high altitude
langweilig Jakey 😛
So ich bin langweilig is wrong 😨
Isn't it the same in English lol
how would you say I am really high in the air?
could one also say "ich habe langweilig"
no one is gonna say 'im high" thinking they're at a high altitude
Ich bin gelangweilt.
Ist dir langweilig?
Doch
Oh ok
^
Yeah cool
👍
🥳 👍 🥳 👍

@gritty solar

@dark garnet "... viel Geld"
When do I need to focus on the adjective ending ? I thought I need to add an e.
geld has like no plural form
if u gave him flowers u would have said mein vater gibt mir viele blumen
oh right
Ich gebe meiner Schwester einen Hund.

@maiden abyss Neutral form is "...meiner Schwester den Hund"
i dont even use adjectives in english!
Is there a replay of this lesson?

kaufen
if I want to say "I buy a book from the store" is that different?
Ich kaufe ein Buch für meine Mutter.
||Ich kaufe meinem Freund ein Geschenk||

Ich kaufe meiner Mutter ein Buch
Irgendwann hast du jemandem ein Buch gekauft?

||Wir kaufen eine Katze mit mein Vater||
I keep forgetting that sein takes nominative
Wir kaufen meiner Vater eine Katze.

So is there a lesson about pronunciation or something bitte?
Can I say ich bin du?
@maiden abyss ||meinem, dem Vater -> meinem Vater||
👌
oh thanks.
Frage
Can I say ich bin du?
@dark garnet nein
@dark garnet nein
@tiny dragon Base said yes 😳
Toll, ich verstehe, Danke
||Wir kaufen dem Vater eine Katze||
"ich bin du"?
I’m trying to say I’m you
@wary atlas Du bist schon wieder ins u->ü abgerutscht
Du bist cool.
nein, ich bin mikkel
it makes no sense. 😐
Gibt es einen Grund das ich gemutet bin?
ja
@severe sedge Yes, we're having a lesson and you were interrupting.
"Ich bin genau so wie du." - that would work
So ist IS "dem" because it is dative?
I'll unmute you at the end. @severe sedge
Kk
ja
fragen
What about the other characters @maiden abyss
Ich frage ihn etwas.
Ich frage dich wo liegt den hund
This sentence is also correct
Wir kaufen eine Katze dem Vater?
both are accusative?
@graceful island ...dich, wo der Hund liegt
Wo is nabensatz?
Wir kaufen meinem Vater eine Katze.
@mystic dune works, but neutral is "...dem Vater eine Katze"
meiner Mutter
@maiden abyss meiner Mutter
lehren
ich frage dich ein Probelm?
@maiden abyss ..., weil sie klug ist
Where can I see verbs that have both accusative usage
beibringen
ich bringe Mathe bei
Der Freund fragt ob es eine Frage gibt?
Ist das correct?
alternativ: Ich gebe [...]-Unterricht (Ich gebe Schwimmunterricht)
ich bringe Mathe bei
@graceful island I feel like this is missing to whom you're teaching
Ich kann dir Mathe beibringen.
Ich lehren dem Katze der Buch
Wir unterrichten Leuten spanisch
Wir bringen Menschen spanisch bei
||Wir bringen den Leuten Spanisch bei||
|| Wir bringen die Leute Spanisch bei||
Wir beibringen dem Volk Spanisch. ?
Wir bringen Leuten Spanisch bei.
@dark garnet ||den Leuten||
Wir unterrichten Leuten Spanisch
Wir bringen der Leute Spanisch bei. _
it was wir
uh okay let me try again
beibringen is a separable verb, jakey. so the preposition goes to the end of the sentence
@whole blaze ||Leuten||
sorry I coundn't hear what you said base
I thought Leuten would be at the end of the sentence
Oh so only Lehren and fragen is both accusative.
i cant focus 100 percent at nights
||Ich bringe der Katze die Züge bei||
if writing a scifi novel about alien invasion, refer to humans as Menschen 💯
@mystic dune gramaticly correct, but what is it supposed to mean?
I teach the cat the trains @cobalt forum
||Ich bringe der Katze die Züge bei||
@mystic dune Du bringst der Katze die Tanzbewegungen bei?
Training?
What is “I teach the cat the trains” even supposed to mean in English
give another "hard sentence" 😄

Was geht ab, meine Kerle 😎 💯
btw Lillie are u even a1
@tardy prawn What, you don't want the cat to learn the trains?
You do you my man
I already know a lot of this, but refreshers aren't ever a bad thing

im just tired xd
Nah I dont think it does, @teal citrus, I didn't see anyone use zu
I used it @graceful island
my brain isn't working anymore Base haha 😛 Otherwise I'd try
😎 thats okay, everyone gets things wrong sometimes
can we perhaps try some time that's closer to midnight for CET 🙏
Schwarz ist meine Lieblingsfarbe
yall are always faster than me 😔
Why are some words combined into one?
german is weird like that
@graceful island Vielleicht geht's ohne "zu" aber ich habe es nachgeschlagen und ich glaube, dass man solls hinzufügen. Auf jeden Fall hab ich es mit dem "zu" an der Uni gelernt.
Why are some words combined into one?
@tropic tree https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rinderkennzeichnungs-_und_Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz
vielleicht sie beide geht?
just look at this...
@wary atlas "Schwarz ist meine Lieblingsfarbe" war der Satz um den es ging
Lieblingsbuch.
Danke, auf weidersehen @wary atlas
Lieblingbundeskanzlerin
vielleicht sie beide geht?
@graceful island Stimmt. Man sagt ja sehr häufig "es macht Sinn" z.B. aber was "am Richtigsten" ist, ist "es ergibt Sinn" zu sagen. Umgangssprachlich hast du vermutlich Recht.
Einverstanden, vielen dank!
@mild canyon ei->ie
@wary atlas When do you use a Bindestrich? Ex: IT Bereich oder IT-Bereich
macht sinn
danke
Furor Teutonicus (latin)
(no pun intended)
@wary atlas so basically... bauchgefühl ?:|
So are we doing vocabulary themes next week?
You have the B level role. Is that referring to your level of German?
@tiny dragon IT-Bereich needs the dash, because it's one word
faq cefr
If you see something like A1, B2 or C1, these represent the proficiency of a speaker in a language they're not native in, and are called CEFR levels. They are valid for any language, not only German!
Roughly speaking, A levels are beginners and C levels are experts. Remember that CEFR level are self-assessed and indicative!
You can see more specific names and descriptions on the Wikipedia page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_European_Framework_of_Reference_for_Languages
🗨 How do I know what level I am?
If the table on Wikipedia is too generic for you, you can try using this one here:
https://rm.coe.int/168045bb52
Just check each column one at a time: if you can do all it describes, move to the next column. Your level is the highest where you can do the most things.
Alternatively, you can use this questionnaire to estimate your level more accurately:
https://www.laits.utexas.edu/fi/sites/laits.utexas.edu.fi/files/Self Assessment Checklist European.pdf
I've heard that both work, but IT-Bereich is more professional
btw are done w/ the lesson?
(no pun intended)
@graceful island Ich nähme gerne sowieso den Kalauer hin.
not sure about the rules myself, but usually you see a lot of dashes when it comes to foreign words/technical terms. Stuff like (you said) IT-Bereich, or CD-ROM etc.
lol
For example: https://www.azubiyo.de/berufe/it-berufe/
"IT Berufe gibt es in verschiedenen Branchen"
well anyway gute Nacht everyone
Danke Baseriinooo
Thank you for the lesson
>sub grammar
@wary atlas danke sehr
and thanks @wary atlas a lot, it was amazing as always
thanks again!
Thank you for everythin base
@tiny dragon but just once on the page, so it's just a mistake/bad style
Vielen dank base
you find that everywhere though
How to say “look at that”?
Neeeeeeee
Did they release the homework for the last lesson yet?
@scarlet breach I don't see it in the drive folder yet so probably not
ah ok
<@&736285634309783554>
Just a heads up, I realized doing a class next week would be rather idiotic, I have an exam on thursday next week. So the first one will be the week after next week. Sorry bout that. I’ll probably do it on thursday (the 13th) but that’s still negotiable.
basically I need to get this exam past me first, sorry
ßascha im so sad, i have an exam that day ;-;
Oh well ill catch it another time 😄
the votes for which day it should happen are like, almost even so I could really do it any day of the three
also I have yet to figure out how to add the session to the upcoming sessions thingy
by which I mean ask about
>session create <group name> <time> <description>
there's a char cap on the description but i have no idea what it is
200 characters.
and >session post <id> <message> to add aditional info to it
@delicate vortex Is there already a date for your advanced reading btw? ❤️
There isnt yet
i usually like Saturday morning (eu Friday night) the most
@wary atlas @storm turret when is too early for you?
i ain't a morning person at all
Niether, but reading gets me up in the morning XD
realistically i could do 10am but that's too late for the euros
I could probably do Saturday evening at about 9
evening is fine
Its getting late for my brain by then but dinner should be done and cleaned up so itll work
if the current poll is the baseline that would be like 21:00 my time I think
can't wait for it tho :^)
Yeeeahh thats like 5am here
rip
Same i really shouldnt have set it as an option
It depends what my sleep schedule is like on the day so I'll just attend if I happen to be able to.
@trim lava 9pm for us is saturday 1pm in europe, would you be able to make that?
You should schedule the thing so you are comfortable holding it! I'll join in if I can ^.^ (1pm europe shouldn't be a problem though)
The middle of the day is always so awkward sorry
Yeah this time is fine, ill make an announcement in a little while
Well, I really like the idea of recording these lessons, since only the teacher is speaking and transmitting 🥳 👍
Well, I really like the idea of recording these lessons, since only the teacher is speaking and transmitting 🥳 👍
It'd become more tangible to others I guess
hallo! sorry if it's a stupid Q, I've only joined the discord today and I did look through the pins but I couldn't find the info. where exactly are the sessions being held?
They'll be held in VC.
Suspected as much, thank you for the confirmation @compact hemlock ♥️
@boreal zealot
@frank ingot Why the ping?

Hallo zusammen!
Dieses Wochende findet eine Advanced-Lesestunde statt, in der wir zusammen aus einem Buch vorlesen werden, und dann die Geschichte und die Worte durchsprechen werden.
was: Momo; Michael Ende
wo: in einem Nur-Advanced-Reading-Kanal, der kurz vor dem Vorlesen erschaffen werden wird
wann: Samstag 13:00 CET/11:00 UTC
@wary atlas I was wondering if I can somewhere see tasks based on your lessons since they are too late for me
Yes, they're in the folders for each lesson. @robust jolt
And I post them in #study-tasks
Okay thank you very much, your work is appreciated
🥰 😊
Hey, @wary atlas what is the next lesson going to be about ?
Ill make an announcement for it today.

Hey everyone! Just a reminder that our next beginner session will be at the same time as usual, 12am UTC/GMT (midnight, Friday night / Saturday morning). That's 2am Germany time (CEST).
This week we'll be focussing on learning some vocabulary. The main topic will be food, but if we have time, I'll also talk about kitchen vocabulary. We'll use this new vocabulary to practice the grammar topics we've discussed so far. By the way, any people who come from German-speaking countries who want to show off their local dishes, feel free to bring those ideas along to the session too!
If you're new to the sessions, never learned any German before, or don't feel confident with the topics covered so far - don't worry! - you're welcome to come just for the vocab, if you wish, or even just to listen along.
Everyone is welcome to join, but keep in mind that this session is aimed at beginners so we will try to keep all topics simple.
Btw, the new homework is also out in #study-tasks! Sorry it's a little late. It took me a while to decide what to include in it.
Oh, and if you want to get pings for these lesson updates, just go to #botchannel and type >sub grammar to subscribe.
Everyone please use #botchannel to check >sessions btw as using #lessons for that tends to be spammy.
<@&639079683400400906>
Hey people, the usual reminder that in about 3 hours our listening comprehension will start! I invite you to use the >session info 13 command in #botchannel to see all the info needed to join! See you in a bit 🙂
Gonna have to skip this one today. And I haven't even done last week's homework 😅
Don't worry too much about homeworks. Those are just extra. The lessons are the more important thing.

Hi learners! Beginner German: Lesson 6 starts in around 30 minutes. Today we'll be discussing mostly food-related vocabulary and phrases. We will also quickly go over possessive determiners, and if we have time, we'll also look at some kitchen vocabulary!
During the session, we'll try to incorporate some of the grammar concepts we learned in the previous sessions. But if you missed those sessions, don't worry - you can still join in and learn something new.
This lesson is aimed at beginners. However, everyone is welcome to join!

Where can i join this session?

kein == none?
Don’t remember the rest

No problem
wait kein isn't on that list, but was listed on the previous slide
is it not a possessive determiner?
Einfach 😋
Why not masculine eurem in dative
Masculine dative is eurem.
👍
It's just a typo in the chart.
Since when is favorite a noun?
declensions
favorite is an adjective
Mein Lieblingshund
Mein Lieblingsfilm

Add a language

Suess
Why deine Lieblingsessen and not dein
süß -> suess
Sorry maybe I’m missing something here
Essen is neuter i think @hallow socket

What should we eat?

where should we eat?
wo = where
||Where should we eat||

Where should we eat/
should = sollten
shall = sollen
Oh
those are separate verbs, or is it irregular? @coral lantern
?
are sollten and sollen forms of the same verb?
mögen -> möchten
modal verb
@scarlet breach they convey different things, even though they are related. Should conveys that it would be better to do something, but it's up to you. Shall is more demanding.
ahh
müssen
like "You shall not pass"?
^^
lol
i like how lunch and dinner have essen in them
"Ich soll das tun" would sound like you telling somebody that someone else forced you to do it, while "Ich sollte das tun" would mean "I should do it", as in "It would be better if I do it"
DU SOLLTEST NICHT BESTEHEN 😄
it's not Ich solle?
What is the Mahl in title means?
to pass can mean bestehen, but in this case it means "durchgehen, durchlaufen, vorbeigehen"
Also when you wanna say like enjoy your meal you say I think malhzeit

But will they know the standard name?
