isn't that literally "next to" "sentence"?
Ja
What means "esse" ?
to eat
Why the second will is at the end of the sentence
eat
to eat
Eat, ich conjugation
- P. Sg. of "essen"
Oh, thanks 🙂
is 'will' a conjugated form of 'woellen'?
wöllen
of wollen, Jakey
wollen
I thought that "will" = will lol
oh its not ö?
Ich will is I want right?
Ich werde essen.
Aaah, I understand
what is the difference between willen and mochten?
want vs must
möchten is would like to i think?
möchten
Must is müssen?
dino yess
must is müssen not möchten
Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
hätten? Like haben?
whats hätte?
conjunctive of haben
future tense
oh wow ok
Ok
möchten
hätten
Ich werde Wasser trinken.
Ill drink water?
@royal bolt its the subjunctive of haben not the conjunctive
Beziehungsweise
both subjunctive and conjunctive are used in linguitsics
what does the sections mean?
matter of semantics
like und aber
respectively
and the oder denn
or 😂
no the squars
denn and weil both mean because, right?
yes
what is the difference between denn and weil?
^
ok thanks

Nebensatz: finite verb form goes to the end
Hauptsatz: finite verb is in second position
what is the diference between aber and sondern?
Where should we put the wollen in Nebensatz
English doesn't really use because with main clauses, how does that work?
im absolutely lost with all the 'satz' words xd
I don't know what means "but (rather)"
nebensatz, hauptsatz, nebensatz...
I don't like fruit but rather vegetables
Er geht nicht zur Schule, weil er krank ist. (conjugated verb end of the side clause)
Er geht nicht zur Schule, denn er ist krank. (conjugated verb in 2nd positoin)
Weil ich Äpfel mag?
Ich mag kein Obst sondern Gemüse
side note: "weil" is much more used than "denn"
also: you will see natives butcher grammar when using weil, like saying "weil ich bin krank". this is still wrong and very colloquial
do you mean as a preference by germans or grammatically?
I don't live in Germany, but rather America

rip ;-;

@royal bolt so it's a matter of preference which you use but which you use will change the word order? Since you used both with the same thought?
Yep.
Ok, danke
da also means there right?
falls vs wenn?
da means there as in pointing to a place though
(german stackexchange is generally a very good site for grammatical intricacies)
bis mal makes sense now
im really new to this server, are these scheduled throughout the week or just when avail?
ok sounds perfect! thanks!
>sessions
what does wissen mean again?
I saw that weiß sometimes can have a different meaning of "white"
i think it means ,to know, and das Wissen means knowledge
Something like "to know"
Weiß
that is true eyeS. weiß as an adjective is white, weiß as conjugated verb is the third person singular indicative of wissen
Ich weiß nichts. (I know nothing). Er kennt meine Oma. (He knows my mother)
wait just now was wissen and?
Oma ist grandma, Anfänger
how is it spelled ;-;
kennen
kennen
okie thanks!
that is true eyeS. weiß as an adjective is white, weiß as conjugated verb is the third person singular indicative of wissen
@royal bolt How can I know in the sentence or in the conversation?
du weißt nichts, jon snow
The white man knows?
The white man knows that.
Oh I see, thx 🙂
keine Ursache!
is the comma necessary in the first sentence?
I think, that german is good. Ich denke, dass Deustch gut ist. So the second part is the subordinating?
Ja, Elcrom
okie!
"dass" leitet immer einen Nebensatz ein
Nebensatz = subordinate
Dass seine Freundin hübsch ist, hat er gestern behauptet.
That his girlfriend is pretty, has he claimed yesterday (literally)
Being sincere, I didn't understand very well the difference meaning about Das and dass, sorry lol

When did this start? just curious for next time
1 hr ago
I think that around 21:10
laughs in 3 am
20:00 for me
8:15 for me
19.14 here now
yeah dang vezel thanks for being here!
8 Uhr for me
22:14 for me
had to wake up early for this
Is class over?
no
no
Aaah I see, cool we have a break lol
2 now
I am literally a beginner in German
Alright
Can u explain me the difference of Das and dass?
I didn't understand very well
"dass" is a conjunction, used to connect two sentences
Ich weiß, dass es regnet.
I know that it's raining
"das" ist both an article (das Buch) and a demonstrative / relative pronoun, refering to a aforementioned object
Ich bin müde, what a mood

Ich weiss, dass du krank bist. is that right?
Ich esse einen Apfel. Mein Nachbar sieht das.
I'm eating an apple. My neighbour sees that.
Ja, Elcrom
but weiß instead of weiss
Oh, I see. Thank u very much vezel
I'm thinking now, what the hell is your photo?
same
umm
I used to know the Alt+NumPad keys but there are so many to know haha
that's family?
LOL
Weirdly even when I switch my phone keyboard over to German, it adds in all the vowels mit umlaut, but not the estet
nice pic lmfaOOOO
we are quite close, Nate.
it's alt+0223

like, face-to-bare-stomach levels of close
Why can't I write many "kkkk" in the chat? lol
clearly lmao
hold the s
like a cultural thing
joke's on you, i'm only half german, Jakey
honestly i thought u were facing a car seat until someone pointed it out lmao
I thought it as an old mustach man grin
Was there a lesson on accusative and dative cases that I missed?
@royal bolt sorry man im just watching Dark and its my first german film/tv show ever
huh, why sorry?
why is hunger caped?
so im just trying to see whats german culture about
all is good
oooooo I'm liking Dark....
ooh ok
Ich bin hungrig.
would one say then "du wird Hunger bekommen"?
Habe = am, or something like auxiliary verb?
wirst*
Habe is have
haben = to have
habe = i have
Aaah, I see. Thx
it is grammatically correct, but i cant come up with a single case where one would actually say that
elcrom
you will be hungry later?

Du wirst Hunger bekommen, wenn das Essen auf dem Tisch steht.

"You will be hungry when the dinner is on the table"?
yes
I am hungry and I am thirsty
I am hungry and I am thirsty.
I am hungry and I am thirsty.
I am hungry and I am thirsty
Durst Base 😉
Ich habe Hunger und Durst.
I eat because I am hungry
I eat because I am hungry
I’m eating cuz I’m hungry
I am eating because I am hungry.
could you add gerade there?
weil = den, but different Wortstellung?
The last one sentence order is weird
Because I am hungry, I am eating.
sleep
Sleep
Because I am tired, I am sleeping.
SLEEP
when I am tired, i sleep
When I am tired, I am sleeping.
not to sound rude but when does the class end?
Why the order be like this
oh ok lolol
can you maybe write two sentences separately
and then join them together just so i can see where the whole thing fits
(For me "da">"weil" in 95% of cases, but regional etc.)
Sie reist so viel. Ich sehe sie selten.
Sie reist so viel, weil ich sie selten sehe.
Sie reist so viel aber ich sehe sie selten
Sie reist so viel, weil sehe selten sie?
Sie reist so viel aber ich sehe sie selten
Sie reist so viel denn ich sehe sie selten.
What the mean of this sentence?
||Da sie so viel reist, sehe ich sie selten||
Wiel sie so viel reist, sehe ich sie selten.
she travels so much so I see her rarely
Sie reist so viel dass sehe ich sie selten
She travels so often I see her seldomly?
She travels so much that I rarely see her?
Oh oops
She travels so often but I see her rarely.
So we should use dass?
Sie reist so viel und ich sehe sie selten?
What if she is in another country and she travels but never to see me? =P
viel = much
Warum sind die Deutschen noch wach?
weil ich dich lieb habe, Trax
what means "often" in deutsch?
Ich auch lol
viel = much
@latent ravine Thx
da is the same as weil?
ja
Ohh the contrast lol
what does denn weil and ja mean ?
oh i missed that part oof
same
okay thanks i also just checked the schenke's grammar book and
it has a good chapter on it i think
ok thanks
Denn sie reist so viel, sehe ich sie selten <--- is this possible?
The last ones are so confusing lol
no, blep
Denn leads to a main clause, so normal word order (verb second)
The "denn" clause cant go first
got it
i just realized that after your question, blep
kjdfhg
👍
in english, improper/incomplete written sentence, you'd only see it as a response in dialogue
Heute haben wir unseren Deutschkurs. Wir sind nicht im Klassenzimmer.
Heute haben wir unseren Deutschkurs, aber wir sind nicht im Klassenzimmer.
Heute = Today?

Heute haben wir unseren Deutschkurs, aber wir sind nicht im Klassenzimmer.

can zudem be used both as "in addition to ---", as well as "in addition, ---"

Same, Directing
Mach deine Hausaufgaben, sonst gibt es Ärger!

@maiden abyss it is possible yeah

pronounce außerdem again please
He has pretty eyes, in addition he dances also very well.
"sehr" dino?
can it be like
hu'bsche is interchangeable with scho'n?
Hubshe feels like handsome 🤔
"tanzt" is a verb, so literally it is "..., plus he dances very well"
huebsche
Not always, Elcrom
ü ö ä ß
Das Wetter ist schön, aber nicht hübsch.
nope
so an object is more likely to be schoen not huebsch?
Nein
hübsch = only aesthetically pleasing
ok
schön = aesthetically pleasing or just pretty / nice in general

Anna / zurückkommen / sehr spät
Anna kommt sehr spät zurück.
Anna kommt sehr spät züruck.
||Anna kommt sehr spät zurück||

||Jetzt siehst du fern||
OH
HAHAAH
Siehst du jetzt fern?
why is deepl telling me fernsehen means television
correct me if I am wrong, time and place adverbs always come right after subject-verb?
watching television
It is watching tv
siehst du jetz fern?
the importance of capitalization
fernsehen is a verb but it can also be a noun when written with a capital F @maiden abyss
Siehst du jetzt fern?
deepl needs to learn to differentiate between capital letters

Vezel hat Linguine vor zum Essen
cant we use like this... Essen as noun?
Essen is food but essen is to eat
Oh
@royal bolt is "er lernt lesen" wrong then?
Ich kann Deutsch lernen.
Ich will Deutsch lernen.
Ich versuche, Deutsch zu lernen.
oh we talked about this
Versuche is?
i think?
zum Lernen*
ist richtig?
nope, that is not wrong, Elcrom
@tight flame "Er lernt zu lesen" would be the natural version
ok
Ok 👌
"Das Kind lernt gehen" is also natural in my opinion, Directing
to make a stab at sth. etw. versuchen
just while we're there, are probieren and versuchen interchangeable?
oh ok
🤷 regional preference (the "zu" question)

Müssen sollen
müssen
durchen
no it has

laut Duden steht mit lernen immer der Infinitiv
are those the only modal verbs?
*** möchten is in fact the subjunctive form of mögen, but nowadays it is used in the present tense as a separate modal verb (for past tenses, we use wollen).*
so those r just the polite forms of the modal verbs
Könnten - could
Können- can
and so on
right?
sollten = should
yes
shall?
Dürfen= be supposed to/be allowed
i mean this https://www.dict.cc/?s=sollen has a pretty good list of 10+ possible translations

30+

Based on the context
i mean i translated it to serbian and its hard to translate to english too
maybe the serbian got it correct
simply grasp it as German itself. Translation will spoil it many times
Ich will Deutsch lernen.
That’s how I learn English
👍
yeah when 2 verbs
👌
1 goes 2nd
2 goes at the end
understood :)
im confused abt the comma
zu-infinitive clause
can we have more examples with this or
the comma is not necessary, you can use it but nornally we dont
oooo ok

how often do intermediate / advanced lessons roll around?
in terms of grammar/“teaching german”, in my experience never, but reading groups aimed at higher levels have happened before and when they do happen they tend to be a weekly thing for a few weeks
until the host gets bored of hosting them

You're making the lovely hosts look bad :p

organised by base
(tbf it was a one-off session)
(that I’ve just not had ideas for on how to continue)
(at this point I could probably rehost it some day)
oh you hosted it?
In theory you missed it but technically you didn't as nobody showed up
darnit I missed it too
@trim ferry @maiden abyss Were you guys intending to join?
Yup @wary atlas and I looked at the bot too, but still remembered the wrong time 🤦♂️
Was the time good for you guys though?

This week we're going to try out a new session: self-study VC meetup for beginners. This session has no official host.
Hi everyone. This week we're going to try a new session: self-study VC group for beginners. The session runs Sunday 6pm-9pm UTC/GMT and you can join in at any time. In order to participate, you will need the Activities role, and the sessions will take place in the Activities VC and text channel.
This is not really a lesson but a scheduled meetup time where beginners can meet each other and study together. I won't be hosting it myself and most likely won't be there - because I wanted to choose a time that works for European time zones as well as US time zones - but I encourage any Level A people (including absolute beginners) to join in and study some German together.
The recommended task is to go through the weekly homework task together, but you're welcome to bring your own ideas or just practice speaking.
So would you be interested if I hold it again next week?
next week? sure.
I may do another poll to see how much interest there is. Or do you guys have a better suggestion for what day/time to do it?
I just wanted to practice a bit so I'll be fine with the homework you post, as well.
But yeah, I'd like another meeting if there is one
Okay no problem.
Is the homework gonna be posted soon?
Probably tomorrow.
Alright 😄

Hallo zusammen!
🦜
1: Freitag
2: Samstag
3: Sonntag
4: danke Maple

1: 5:00
2: 7:00
3: 11:00
4: 12:00
5: 19:00
6: 21:00
7: 23:00
can i still join just to listen to people read?
Always.
I think you should let @delicate vortex decide that, they did say

after all
That changes things. ^
Ich dachte mitmachen heißt mitlesen 🤔 Ich glaube nicht, dass es ein großes Problem ist, wenn jemand nur zuhören möchte (zumindest war es vorher auch immer so, es wäre da halt nur gut wenn man das auch erkennen kann). Aber Blu wird sich hier nochma melden, dann wissen wir es 😛
She can also mute anyone who only wants to listen.

Friendly reminder: The listening comprehension will start in approximately 3 hours from now! If you'd like to join, please familiarise yourself with the rules by typing >session info 12 in #botchannel

after all
@lyric goblet yeah i have absolutely no idea what that means but i kinda liked just listening to people read/translate before, it's fine that's not possible with these lessons, though
also, are they/is she a they? like nb/gf/etc?
She is a she.
I use they for everyone I’m not absolutely 100% certain about
^
that includes practically everyone I’ve not actually talked to in person
Same, to be honest.
ah alright :p
the quote means
unfortunately I must be a bit strict and strongly recommend that only those with at least B1 should participate
like I’ll they casca even though I’m like 80% certain they’re a guy?
Yeah, I'm a guy.
and if I’m wrong right now with that belief then that just proves why it’s a good idea
You may use he henceforth. ^^
you spelt gay wrong, casca :P
Only gay for my wife Sun.
but basically me using “they” has no further intended implications
ok
except I suppose trying to be actively inclusive and non-offensive
which is something I’ll happily imply about myself
@ashen cave youre free to drop by and listen
:D
I only set the recomendation, since i believe it would be quite challenging for beginner level learners to join in
Since id like to hold it completly in german
Itll be a little different to the regular reading sessions, instead of translating into English, we will try to explain whats happening in german
@compact hemlock ja mit „mitmachen“ meinte ich mitlesen, zuhören kann man bestimmt
It was 🐱 who asked that.
if you weren't already planning to, probably a good idea to host it in an advancedreading role-locked channel too
Everyone is always welcome to join and listen to any lesson.
Ach sorry casca
And yeah, feel free to use advanced reading.
I dont think i have Privileges for that yet
Unless it also falls under reading

while you're at it syro do you want to add me to that list?
All good, Bluhu.
you wanna do a lesson too ?
in the future. i've done them before lmao
Hopefully the time won't be like Friday 19:00, otherwise I probably can't join you from the beginning Blue :^(
If I ever get around to Max und Moritz, I'll ping you.
