thank you base ❤️

@tawdry gorge ive been meaning to

Thanks for joining in. ❤️
i feel so accomplished but im scared im going to forget
practice practice practice
Like I said, it's fine if you forget the adjective stuff for now.
Just worry about the verb conjugation rules mostly.
And learning pronouns.
though legit re genetiv, my german teacher, a native speaker in germany, even tells us that genetive is often replaced by dative in informal conversation
im leanring german for fun
i havent taken a class before
so i dont have this knowledge
but i asutdied in austria for 4 months so i have some german speaking friends
they can help me
Wait how replaced is genitive?
Normally id write: das Auto des Mannes/Manns
But i can say or informally write: das Auto dem Mann
@storm turret Sure, but it's a common misconception that people have about German and it's important to note the distinction between "it's slowly being replaced by dative" and the reality which is "dative has always been more common in some regions/dialects".
I'm pretty sure it's largely a regional thing. Many people do actually use genitive in daily speech. And it's not a new concept.
if it's a common misconception it's being purported by both textbooks and uni level german teachers here in germany
Yes.
@boreal zealot Wrong channel to ask about that. 👀
You should ask in #general or #general-2
the tl;dr either way is learn genetive eventually but don't be surprised if some native speakers use dative where you'd expect there to be genetive
Yes.
@wary atlas you're doing great efforts in months to help the members of this community, thank you!
Thank you as well. ❤️

Saturday 11th Feb - 17:00 Central Europe Time
Hallochen lovelies!
In addition to your normally scheduled reading session (availability pending), we're also be trialling something new this weekend. We'll be reading a lower level text, but rather than attempt to translate the passage into English, we'll be trying to explain what's happening in our own words using German. We'll also be trying to explain unknown words using German. Bilingual dictionaries are allowed, but we'll be trying to avoid using translations and speak in entirely in German as much as possible!
We're open to text suggestions to read and I'll be looking at some possible texts over the week, but I'm thinking maybe Das Blutenstaubzimmer if I can find a digital copy we can use."

Base, I think might have plans.
Yes Saturday, Frosty
We'll try to provide a nice overview of upcoming lessions

How to get started
The simplest way to learn German is to find topics you don’t understand yet and search for explanations of them. This list provides you with a guide for which topics to learn if you are completely new to German. Type the topic into Google (or YouTube) and start learning!
Introduction
1: Alphabet (especially ä, ü, ö and ß)
2: Basic greetings (hello, goodbye, etc.)
Part 1 - Simple Sentence
1: Noun gender & plurals
2: Nominative case (What are cases?)
3: Nominative pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc.)
4: Verbs in present tense
5: Definite/indefinite articles
6: Accusative case (for nouns)
7: Accusative pronouns
8: Word order of simple sentences
9: How to ask questions
See Part 2 with >faq beginner 2
Tips
- Always learn the gender of a noun when you learn a new noun
- Learn to use a translation dictionary (e.g. dict.cc, leo.org)
- Use
>faq resourcesto see our list of German learning resources - For listening and pronunciation practice, try watching movies or videos (incl. YouTube)
- You can listen to pronunciation for words on websites like dict.cc, forvo.com, and others
- Practice writing sentences every day (and asking people to correct them)
- Ask as many questions as possible
- Don’t be scared to make mistakes!!!! If you don’t let yourself make mistakes, you will never be able to learn German

MANFRED WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU
It's an opportunity to use newly acquired English vocab Milly
But i haven’t studied any English vocab in weeks
Oh ... :(
And from my new book I only learned words about bodies of water

But I will surely manage to include the word rivulet in a conversation with a customer
The new year book?
Aye
Yes! They'll never see that coming
My second book is in German
Is it depressing
It’s heavy but in a very good way
Ah... Nice
(Sorry for spamming lessons btw, swooshing to general)
Or is it an old book?
It's lit
Nah, it’s newer
Interesting.
2016
And what kind of book?
It’s a novel about a family that deals with the suicide of a core family member.
And what country is it from? If you know.
Uh, id say US or UK but I don’t know
Hmm, must be UK tbh because I don't think US uses rivulet. 🤔
Anyway, thanks, I was just curious about what kind of context such a vocab choice would come from. 😄
Ohh, interesting.
Thankyou all who came today!
I was unsure how this format would go since it was a new format. Also note that this is not nor intended to be a replacement to the normal reading sessions. simply another way for upper levels to practice their reading comprehension and speaking. But I would be very glad to hear any feedback or suggestions for the lesen ohne übersetzung format.
I think it went well. I like that it's all in German
Maybe have people name themselves so that we know who's available for reading it not
Like -Trax
If not reading
Or maybe the inverse of that
If im muted i wont read
the thing with muting is it's not a consistent signifier. some people stay muted unless they're speaking at that very moment because of background noise etc
If im muted i wont read
if maple is muted he wom't read
If maple is muted he won't read
If maple is muted he won't read
If maple is muted he won't read
If muted is maple, he won't read
If read is won’t, he maple muted
If read is won’t, he maple muted
Whoa wait
If muted is maple, he won't read
There
If maple is muted he won't read
If if muted is muted maple, maple read won't muted if is read.
Muted maple is, he read
Muted he is Maple read
Won't Maple is muted, if read
Wie funktioniert das? Ich verstehe dass wir lesen ein Buch zusammen, aber wie.... oder.... wann? Gibt es einen Zeitplan?
Bitte, korrigieren Sie meine Grammatik.

Thanks everyone for reading with me. 🤗

In the TV series, how far have we covered?
Or you guys have covered.
Is what's been read so far still episode one?
I haven't watched the show yet.
Oh. 😊
the show doesn't correspond 1 to 1 with any single book
in fact i think it combines a few of the witcher books together
like this scene that we read today didn't appear in the show as far as i remember
I guess I'll watch it sometime soon so I can tell people about which stories are in the show.
Really? I'm surprised it wouldn't be in the show.
I watched just the first couple of minutes of the show, I was concerned a bit that the readings going to spoil
It's pretty important to the whole saga.
at least not the details like this.
I wouldn't read any stories that I felt would spoil anything.
Oh, this isn't the first book of the series?
No.
Like how 1984 has an entire section at the end about the various places in the book
There's two short story collections, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny.
These all take place before the saga itself.
Ah... So this will be an entire short story and is then self contained
Like it's actually a story like Little Red Riding hood
spoiler:
||is this story the one with pavetta and the hedgehog man?||
And follows a narrative arch
Yes, but parts of the short stories come up in the later main storyline.
@storm turret Yes.
The short stories themselves are self-contained and usually just kinda experimental reinterpretations of existing stories, or at least reference them.
Like in this one we just read, Geralt told about an annoying prince who tried to hire him to find his girlfriend who ran away during a ball, and lost her shoe.
Because she was sick of him.
||so in the netflix series that bit starts with jaskier dragging geralt along to the ball as protection||
i.e. reinterpretation of Cinderella
Why is it an insult?
Well, I was going to say plagiarized
It's not plagiarism to write reinterpretations of fairytales, lol.
It's intentional.
He's doing it to add humour.
And some various interesting things like "reality is very different from fairytales" and so on.
Many people do that.
cinderella is so old that no single body owns it
I'll tell Bro that next time he shares a pun he's taken from the web 🙂
"nice interpretation bro"
Like Disney is essentially doing the same thing.
as much as disney may try to "own" fairytales, fairytales at this point belong to the collective consciousness of society
Except Disney makes it more for children and Sapkowski made it more a humorous fantasy in the style of Tolkien.
god even the brothers grimm fairytales i think were heavily based on pre-existing folklore
Well, not in the style of Tolkien. I mean the setting is inspired by Tolkien and fairytales and mashes them together along with Polish culture and a lot of sarcasm.
like writing about bigfoot or a yeti
That's true, I don't mean it as it's a piracy issue, just that it was eerily Cinderella like and that I like to say "plagiarism" cause it's more insulting 🙂
But that's mostly in the short stories.
In the short stories he was just writing somewhat disconnected stories, but later he writes he main saga and it's more like a standard fastasy series.
Like one consistent storyline and less of these cute references.
Ah... I have to say that it's kind of tough in german
More focus on developing the setting and characters.
I mean the language, and maybe that's reflective of the writer.
The story is originally written in Polish.
Some writers use very simple language and that makes it easy to read, even in translations (hemmingway eg)
So it's not just the author but the translator.
i also didn't start being able to enjoy books in german until b level
One of the issues with the Witcher stories is there's a lot of sarcasm and word play and stuff.
So if youre a beginner, it may be hard to pick that up.
The language is used in specific ways to express the different tones.
I see
For me, it's easier because I already read the stories in English.
I get what they're going for even if I don't know every word.
that helps immensely
So they actually call him Jaskier in the show? @storm turret
just going by CEFR, reading novels at A level is a notable achievement. e.g. A2 reading on the CEFR chart
simple everyday material such as advertisements, prospectuses, menus and timetables and I can understand short simple personal letters.```
they do yeah
Interesting.
point is don't at all feel discouraged if you find reading difficult at this stage, trax
Yeah, don't worry, Trax.
This story is hard.
And once you study more grammar, you will have an easier time.
Thanks guys
Since I know that your specific issue is that you tend to have a hard time working with unfamiliar constructions, the study of grammar (instead of just memorizing structures) is the key point that's probably holding you back from reading more easily.
especially understanding and recognising the patterns in building simple past and perfect forms of verbs helped with my reading
e.g. being familiar enough with common vowel changes to know that schlugen probaly comes from schlagen even if i've never seen schlugen before

Heyo lovely learners! I'll be holding my first reading session next week on Wednesday at around 6pm (CET). We will be reading Struwwelpeter, the perhaps most iconic children's book in Germany which contains, among other things, children dying horrible deaths. I personally think its around A2-B1 in level, but feel free to take a look at the whole text here http://www.gasl.org/refbib/Hoffmann__Struwwelpeter.pdf. See you there!
No i just hate R2D2
perhaps most iconic children's book in Germany
but Max&Moritz!
I prefer C3PO
I will try to make this session, mami
@runic badge What about the people who don't know CET? Shouldn't you put GMT and how many hours until on there? What if someone gets confused?
Weil ich lieb dich
It is 12 noon for me
4 days 3 hours and 10 minutes.
So many numbers
mapple what kind of conjuction is weil?
What
is weil a coordinating or subordinating conjunction
I have no idea my dude
todays lesson. there are 3 main types of conjunctions: coordinating, two part, and subordinating
und, oder, and denn (among others are coordinating.
denn ich liebe dich. the conjunction goes in position 0
in subordinating conjunctions, the verb gets kicked to the end
weil ich dich liebe
Ohh
you can find tables of the conjunctions. the coordinating list is the shortest so memorise that, two parters are pretty obvious pairs. the rest it's best to assume subordinating and kick the verb to the end
What level is this
all levels
you learn the conjunctions in stages
the terns they use in german are hauptsatz and nebensatz i think.
subordinating conjunctions create a nebensatz. most nebensätze that i'm aware of (maybe all) kick the verb to the end.
Are you also someone who watches those videos where they call them "verb kickers" or something, sunset?
surprisingly no. i think that may have been a terminology i picked up from here
maybe i should start using dw's wandern
https://learngerman.dw.com/en/nebensätze/l-40684812/gr-42062139
😄
Who else is using Duolingo? Is there any one who would compete against me ?
not the right channel my dude
*Entschuldigung
die Entscheidung is a decision
comes from the verb entscheiden
Thanks for amending this . It has been only 1 month ago since I started learning German
Good thing you pinged Mami
I was going to pester you about itbtoday

Hey everyone! Today we'll be going over some beginner grammar! Suitable for Level A and absolute beginners, but anyone is welcome to join. We'll discuss word order, starting from simple sentences and then possibly working up to more complex sentences. The lesson will start in around 5 minutes!
won't it be reading session?
Reading session was yesterday.
grammar for B levels when?
What topic do you want to see?
The grammar for reaching B2 or something like that
Any specific topics?
Any grammar thing for B is ok
Okay.
Can we have a lesson on adjectives at the end? Like "es ist ....... gegessen" for example.
@boreal zealot das heißt Partizip II oder Partizip Perfekt
@strange valve Btw you can join if you want.
ill just listen bc im making my crumble
Oh are you guys starting early today?
Same as usual.
I don't work till later today so I'll be on in just a second, I'm writing something
You also have "time manner place"
Ich lerne heute Deutsch.
@ruby ocean Yus, but I mean when the adjectives go at the end. Like "es ist ... (adjective)".
But actually, I feel a lesson on all the meanings of "es" is better imo.
But idk.
ja, das ist kein Adjektiv, das ist ein Partizip
Just me haha.
by any chance is your native language mabe a romance language, robin? maybe spanish?
oh, it's the same as the english 'it' then
But it isn't

If base makes a list we can maybe do practice sessions
And the more we are exposed to all of this...etc... the more it will just come naturally.
There's like 10 or something
ooooh okay!
So we can do one each day. Over and over until we vomit out verbs in the correct order
isn't the verbs that end in -en usually the strong verbs?
Hahaha!! '
ge- -t
and -t the weak verbs?
Nice Trax! I like that!
@hollow narwhal sounds good to me, ty!
Vielen Dank Base!!
Ich will eine Sprache, die cool ist, lernen.
Ich will eine Sprache lernen, die cool ist.
weak (regular verbs)
kaufen - kaufte - gekauft
putzen - putzte - geputzt
strong (irregular verbs)
essen - aß - gegessen
lesen - las - gelesen
there are also mixed verbs
danke
Danke!!
danke!!!
an example of a mixed verb is bringen - brachte - gebracht
mixed verbs often have a vowl change but still end in te (simple past) and t (perfect)
Thanks Base
strong verbs and mixed verbs are the execption. learn them specifically. then the rest use the same -te and -t pattern
This was wonderful! Thank you so much!
I'm going to miss the hecke session :(
I was saving data and time for the last one and the fates were against it
Summary of our main topics discussed today
- simple sentence / main clause word order (conjugated verb in second position)
- anything can go first, regardless of if it's the subject, object, adverb, etc. but time adverbs especially love to be at the start (e.g. Heute lerne ich Deutsch.)
- multiple verbs in a main clause
- question word order (with or without question words)
- using coordinating conjunctions
- subordinate clause word order: conjugated verb at the end
- first type of subordinate clause: subordinating conjunctions
- second type: relative clauses (warning: it's slightly more advanced than the other topics)
- adverbs word order: TeKaMoLo (ask yourself: when? why? how? where?)
- when you have two objects, e.g. with geben: accusative pronoun > dative pronoun > dative noun > accusative noun
- a link to nicht placement guidelines: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~deutsch/Grammatik/WordOrder/WordOrder1.html#nicht
Homework: go write some sentences with these ideas!!! Post them in #beginner-german to get corrected.
oh wait i was gonna write a relativsatz using futur passiv perfekt
👀
or maybe just one with a coordinating conjunction because i can't think of any relativsatz's right now
ich habe gesehen, dass es gegessen worden sein wird.

Hello juicy learners! There will be a level A-B reading session today at 2pm ECT/UTC+1. We'll have the option of continuing Harnold Topfkopf (Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen), or If you have a suggestion on content that you think would suit the lesson, we'll always be happy to consider it too. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
❤️
I had to look up “Stein der Weisen”. It’s cute how “Weisen” sounds kind of like “wise one”.
Is the “der” here Genitiv?
