Hello everyone. I'm going to run a Level A grammar session about present tense conjugation and nominative and accusative cases on Jan 6th at 23:00 UTC (11pm). Everyone is welcome to join.
:D
whomstv tho
Base
Me.
base is jx. i literally saw that in pms half an hour ago. big brain rip me
It says "Everyone is welcome to join."
True haha
Actually nvm it turns out UTC is england time and I‘ll be asleep then haha
Serious suggestion: never use UTC. It is the standard but quite a few people mistake it for German time every single time. If you use a timezone that isn't German time, specifically point it out.
@runic badge Why not UTC?
Because it's close enough to German time to be consistently mistaken for it
Every time someone gives the time in UTC, someone messes up
No because of you use say Pacific time then when you issue your ping on the day of the lesson it becomes very clear it can't possibly be German time
But I think that if people are incapable of looking up a time zone (you can literally just google "current time utc") then it's their own problem if they miss the session.
It's not about people being too lazy to look it up
It's about people not getting that UTC isn't CET
Again I think you can use any timezone you want as long as you make sure everyone gets that it's not the German one
If wager at least 30% of learners use CET in their lives and they don't automatically check timezone differences because they live in the same one as germany
But pretty much everyone uses UTC as the standard by which they describe times. 🤔
Base I'm not saying UTC isn't the proper standard
But that given this is a German server, I think a lot of people fail to realize you're giving it in a different timezone because they live in the same one as germany.
Then it's still their own problem for not reading the announcement properly.
I mean, even if I say in the announcement, "it's not German time", if someone isn't able to read the time zone, they probably also aren't going to read that note.
I personally forgot multiple times btw
Well not forgot but just accidentally read UTC as German time
I think it's a bit biased to assume people would be fine with CET time but not with UTC. UTC is way better known than CET, so it's less confusing.
When using UTC, people can be pretty confident about how they compare it to their own time.
Since they already know their own time in UTC.
Base
One more time
I'm not against you using UTC
As you said it makes perfect sense for learners outside Europe and africa
But these learners are already primed to check for timezone differences
Whereas if I live in the same time zone most of the server operates on, I'm less likely to think they would even use a timezone that isn't mine
Any sort of short phrase that would make someone double check is completely valid for me
Be it that's x hours from now, that's X in CET, keep in mind timezone differences or whatever
Okay, I'll make sure to always add the time from now when I make announcements in future.
Thanks
In Australia, we don't have school from Dec to Feb
Like the Americans
Base lesson
Hello, where can i learn "linked words" in german, somthing as "Look forward", "take care of" and something like that
i dont know how do i express what i need
Do you mean words with prefixes/suffixes, or words that are similar
I think you can use pass auf dich auf for like "take care of yourself"
I mean the phrases that are made from about 2 words or more
which u couldnt understand if it was separated
example?
Kennenzulernen etc??
@trail eagle These questions should go in #questions
<@&526087863339843585>

is there only one to be? in spanish there are 2
he's even excited in german now
temporary and permanent
okay great :D
im back whtd i miss
aaah, that's just adjective inflection here.
if you use the adjective after the noun (attributiv) = no inflection. Das Verb ist schwach/stark.
But if you're using it as a proper adjective (before the Noun) it get's inflected. schwache/starke Verben for example
oh ok
ooh cool
This lesson is just going to be present, right?
is it only the vowel changes that have du + es/sie/es that are the same?
Alright
ok

Saturday 11th Feb - 17:00 Central Europe Time
Hallochen lovelies!
In addition to your normally scheduled reading session (availability pending), we're also be trialling something new this weekend. We'll be reading a lower level text, but rather than attempt to translate the passage into English, we'll be trying to explain what's happening in our own words using German. We'll also be trying to explain unknown words using German. Bilingual dictionaries are allowed, but we'll be trying to avoid using translations and speak in entirely in German as much as possible!
We're open to text suggestions to read and I'll be looking at some possible texts over the week, but I'm thinking maybe Das Blutenstaubzimmer if I can find a digital copy we can use.
wait
Sunset.
whats the diff between object and subject
OH
OH
subject is whos doing it
object is what is being affected
or whatver
Wait how did you even issue a lesson thing? You‘re not a mod?
der -> den ?
Everyone is a mod except you Robin.
Oh and Broseidon. You and Broseidon.
declension?
in english I is nominative, me is accusative, and to me is dative, though accusative and dative are kind of mushed together in english so there isn't a 1:1 correspondance
why is nominativ not? bcuz its default?
nvm. idk
haha
okay
🙂
ich verstehe
ich kuesse den hund?
LOL
yes
i made up some weird sentence there
think of it as the thing that’s having an action done to it
die lehrer esse das brot? uh oh. i dnno if its die or der.. lol or esse or isst.. gg
Die Lehrerin isst den Wassertoast. 😌
and yes it’s das
isst
😉
@primal walrus There's a lesson going on btw in VC.
isst das Brot
ohh rightttt
oh
oh oh ya lehrerin
Der Lehrer isst das Brot
Oof, working again :(
@primal walrus Speaking of, you should be asleep, it‘s 0:30.
that’s true
Er isst das Brot
and college tomorrow 😬
Das Brot isst der Lehrer
am i wrong?
Nominative -> Accusative
der -> den
die -> die
das -> das
i assumed since its bread. i kind of put it with the word "es"
Das Brot isst den Lehrer
das brot isst den lehrer .. or die lehrerin
why wait why does der --> den?
akkusativ masculine is den
accusative = noun having something done to it
ok
so i need to practice simple sentences i guess
indefinite?
eine katze isst den vogel? i assumed bird is masculine. i forgot lol
Die Katze (definite)
Eine Katze (indefinite)
Eine Katze isst eine Vogel.
eine katze isst einen vogel
Der Vogel
yes
isst einen Vogel (eats a bird) oder isst den Vogel (eats the bird)
whatd you ask?
ich du es/sie/es wir ihr sie
wir*
informal /formal
wie = we
no, wir = we
wir*
wie = how
wie = how
wir = we
ja genau
i dont know them
wait
ich
mich?
Du siehst ....
ich mich
Ich sehe ...
ihn?
also
why was ein --> einen for Vogel earlier can i ask still?
dein profil bild gefällt mir basementality, ist das geralt?
der / den -> er / ihn
akkusativ. ein is for masculine. so einen is akkusativ masculine
Du siehst ...
you see us
Wir sehen dich.
Du siehst uns.
ihr
ich sehe euch?
du siehst ihr
oi?
du siehst ihn is you see him right?
i think
i keep confusing myself with
ihn and ihr
du siehst ihr isn't quite right
der -> den
ya i remember this one
er -> ihn
I see them.
ich sehe sie
@red marsh We're doing a lesson in Lessons VC right now.
😛
@wary atlas darf man solche bilder hier posten?
Ja.
cool wollte nur fragen
i accidentlly looked at ur picture and looked at dativ
then changed it
ya
ich verstehe
i just need to practice 🙂
i have a question about earlier why ein -> einen for Vogel earlier?
ein Vogel would be the subject of the sentence. einen Vogel would be the object of the sentence
oh ok
think of the difference between "He" and "him" in English. He is the subject, Him would be an object. In german the word for "the" changes in the same way
subject = Nominative, object = Accustative, in terms of the chart i posted
you are an amazing teacher? . bcuz isnt the ein / einen based on the object? but what happens with amazing
like
du bist einen amazing lehrer. idk what amazing is
Das ist der Hund.
oh
with "to be" it actually remains nominative. so it'd be "du bist ein amazing lehrer" you were right the first time 😉
super? 😛
sure, that works
oops
gut
where is er from?
this is one of the trickier parts of german, or at least it was for me when i first started learning
Der gute Lehrer
so if it's a bit confusing at first, don't worry. it will make more sense with practice
ok
you're off to a good start though
ja
Ein
Das guten Katzchen
how do i know if its er or es
wait why are you adding that stuff onto the adjective?
Ein
wait
is this
what is this
like
nominativ. akkusativ...
genetiv... dativ?
oh
so how od i know er or es
ja
ja
der ----> er? es is das?
Der Hund -> ein guter Hund
er is masculine... es is neuter?
and feminin is nothin
nothing*
like
eine already
ok ok
so
Die gute Katze
Eine gute Katze
why are you guys laughing
ich trinke ein grosses bier
?
but
if it was
i drink a beer
its
ich trinke einen bier?
oh
its das
woops
my bad
i think what bro means is that its hard to undrestand your accent because it sounds a bit australian
although , i dont think you soudns like a robot
ich trinke ein bier
ich trinke ein grosses bier
ich trinke ein kleines bier
ich trinke das kleine bier ?
i forgot
how do we do
definite agian
definite*
Der kleine
Das kleine
Die kleine
im gonna have to go now. thanks for your teaching, basement dude!
tschuess!
The small dog
A small dog
why did u mention a bunch of genders for kleine?
oh oh i know the difference
den kleinen Hund
einen kleinen Hund
what are feminine and neuter
kleine - e is the schwa sound https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwa
kleiner - er is more like the german a
for akkusativ
akkusativ is only masculine that changes
with en
i think i shud have wrote this stuff i learned today down
die Katzen, keine Katzen
but hopefully i can remember and just practice
die guten Katzen, keine guten Katzen
if you speak a non-rhotic english dialect e.g. australian, the schwa is the same sound you use in words that end in er like water, butter
der Kaffee -> heißer Kaffee
the coffee -> hot coffee
German adjectives work just like English ones, except that they take on case endings when they come right before a noun: Der Hund ist groß und braun.The dog is big and brown. Der große braune Hund bellte mich an.The big … Continue reading →

also in spoken german it's slowly being replaced by dative
so
i unno i haven't heard any of my roommates use genetiv
are u living in australia? if so, how do u practice german to be so good?
ya
i agree
stimmt
teaching is a good way to learn
ya for sure
your voice sound like asmr u should teach germ n on yutube
