@sharp wolf You're echoing.

Hi everyone. Just so you know, I won't do any German sessions this weekend as I'll be busy. â€
Gute bassrung
@umbral sluice Er meint, dass er beschÀftigt ist und keine Zeit hat und nicht, dass er krank ist. "Gute Besserung" sagt man, wenn jemand krank ist.
trotzdem gute Besserung, @wary atlas ich hoffe dass es dir bald besser geht
ok so @boreal tusk
to start we will do numbers
do you know anything about numbers in German before we start
I only know greetings
ah ok
so, we will start from the basics then
number 1 in German is Eins
2 is zwei
3 is drei
4 is vier
5 is fĂŒnf
6 is sechs
7 is sieben
8 is acht
9 is neun
10 is zehn
I will try to save it in my mind
ok
we will start slowly; however with German youâre lucky
numbers are quite easy to master
as itâs more of a formation than a remember
Short note:
"Eins" can be referred to as "A" or "One".
Which both changed by noun articles as well.
Das ist gute
"Eine Banane" can be "A/One Banana".
eins is one as in the number, and âeinâ is one as in âaâ
yes ^
they are not interchangeable
e.g âich habe eins bananeâ is incorrect
Means i have a banana
ein = number as in article/for an object
yep
eins = number as in quantity
are you ready to move onto the larger numbers
Woah not now xd let me first get all this
Oh!
I want to point out real quick.
Das ist gute
It would be "Gut" instead because it does not refer to any objects or nouns.
So in this situation das ist gute is wrong
yes
Yes.
just das ist gut
Alright
however it would be âguteâ if it comes after
e.g âder gute Hundâ (masc)
âdie schöne Frauâ (fem)
âdas groĂe Bootâ (neu)
but -en for plural
âdie kleinen MĂ€nnerâ
comes after the article*
grosse*
What does all these means
It is a weak adjective if it has a definite article.
yes
Der Frau? Am I missing a case here?
No itâs fine, Iâm here to learn as well
Unless it has an indefinite article;
"Ein guter Tag."
"Eine gute Katze."
"Ein gutes Ei."
Duolingo should handle this teaching.
Lol @boreal zealot
Haha
I have learned greeting from duolingo
Und vllt âdie kleine MĂ€nnerâ?
That is the dative case.
for nom. Case, plural adjectives take â-enâ with definite articles
"Die kleine MĂ€nner" is correct because it is the normative case.
Dative is den kleinen
^
That sentence was normative.
yes
It only involved one subject.
therefore itâs die kleinen MĂ€nner
Ok. Whatever.
Nominative Plural with Der/die/das takes -en
The subject yes.
The adjective, no.
@primal walrus i will try to learn what you both say and ill probably gonna be here tomorrow to learn more if you are free
@boreal tusk I suggest picking up an app, so you can learn the basics
die schönen Frauen
etc
yes thatâs advisable
duolingo for simple phrases, perhaps language websites for grammar
Here's some examples:
"Der kleine Junge." & "Die kleine Jungen"
"Ein kleiner Junge." & "Die kleine Jungen."
âdie kleinen Jungenâ
Normative cases do not contain "-en" for adjectives nor prepositions.
they do
if there's a definite article its always -en ending for adjectives in plural
@harsh cedar i have downloaded duolingo
Okay @boreal tusk
yes
@harsh cedar how did you learn german
without an article its -e -e -en -er
Do you have any good app
yep
N-A-D-G
Lol I didnât @boreal tusk , not yet
I have it in school tho, been learning for about a month now
ah
I had to learn t in school
iâm taking it in college atm
iâve been learning it for about 5 years now
Damn
Can you send me the lessons if thats possible @harsh cedar
Welches Niveau @primal walrus?
those are not adjective declinations
There is no "-en" in prepositions nor adjectives with the normative cases referring to plural.
@harsh cedar im not too sure, havenât tested
@boreal zealot that table is irrelevant to adjectives
thatâs just articles
Guys im beginner . Dont go that fast
But that refers to der/die/das
yes
Correct.
Adjectives reflect off of the noun article.
for the nominative:
M: -e
F: -e
N: -e
PL: -en
@harsh cedar so what you say ?
In this case.
It would be "-e" for plurals for the normative case.
"Die kleine Ăpfel".
it would be kleinen if itâs plural
@boreal tusk what do you mean?
Ok whatever.
Believe in the incorrect grammar..
Can you send me the lessons if thats possible
Oh
I honestly don't care.
German lessons
itâs not incorrect, Iâve learned german for 5 years
and thatâs the way Iâve been taught it
Wait can I dm you @boreal tusk ?
and itâs completely correct
Then your teacher is wrong.
Sure
she is not wrong
^^
for definite article itâs -en
âIch habe rote Ăpfelâ is correct
âDie roten Ăpfelâ is also correct
You just contradicted yourself.
with no article is -e
no, Iâm just explaining that with a definite article itâs -en
That's why I should not talk to you.
i'm out, waste of time
yep
this is a waste
@boreal zealot good luck with your german learning, with an attitude like that
I really like this one for adjective endings, it's a lot simpler imo

Explanation of German adjective endings and declination.
@primal walrus @boreal tusk @boreal zealot Hey guys. It's awesome that you are practicing some German, but this type of thing is done in #beginner-german instead of #lessons. This channel is more so for group lessons held in VC.
Just wanted to mention that.
@wary atlas ah ok thanks for saying I did not know
Are you going to do a lesson today?
Oh, sorry! I forgot to post here, I won't be able to do one again because assignments. Sorry for the lack of lessons lately guys but it's just the busiest time of semester for me. đ
@primal walrus hey
U here ?
Hallo
hello everyone! I dont know if it is too early to be here, but im going to start german classes in february, but i want to start by myself before then, any advice on books or steps to study?
we have a full list of different resources in #resources
Thank youu!

dm me if ur up for it
@boreal zealot lmao reading the chat history this guy is really high on himself
lol
hi everyone
hey milk, long time no see
Are you going to do a lesson this week, Base?
You can do one if he doesn't frosty
I think I will do one tomorrow.

<@&526087868079144961>
Hi everyone! Today at 5pm UTC (7 hours from now) I will be hosting a beginner reading session (most suitable for A1-B1, but everyone is welcome).
We will be reading some articles similar to the other sessions we've had recently. But in the near future (once exams are over) I plan to do some more variety of sessions.
yay
Also note, we have a new lessons role called Activities. Type >sub activities to join it.
Why did we make a new role? This is so we can ping for sessions that don't involve reading or grammar. But people can still sub to only the types of sessions they're interested in!
What counts under "activities"? This will essentially include anything that isn't reading or grammar. In particular: speaking sessions and learning games.
(Side note: please use #botchannel for bot commands such as >sub, if you decide to join it)
<@&526087868079144961>
The reading session will begin in a few minutes!

@boreal zealot đ
sorry guys my connection is real bad
natives usually don't read if not asked to specifically
Sorry, I think I'm going to skip this one. The amount of people makes me nervous and the lagginess is really distracting
Its okay it was just a joke
btw how did i do T_T ??
@green heath Do you want to read?
:>
@green heath You read it, but now you have to translate to English.
I like your English pronunciation @wheat kite

you pronounce Strom like "strohm" with a long O not "stromm"
where are we reading
which part
"Diese FĂ€lle sind absurd â aber trotzdem real. In deutschen BĂŒros......"
this part
gotcha
Question for the learners:
Do you think it would be more helpful for your pronunciation practice if a native would read the paragraphs before the learners read them?
^
I vote for after to give them a chance first to see where they need improvement maybe
Erlaubnis = permission @narrow bane
I just think that every wrong pronunciation makes things more likely to stick incorrectly
I also think that. So I would really think its a great idea that a native reads it slow and clearly after
And also fast
not the all paraghraph though
just where the reader made mistake in
But I sometimes cant understand the reader because of the choppy sound
but just after would defeat the purpose of what I mean. Because then you've already heard yourself pronouncing it incorrectly and therefore have a wrong memory for that word in stock.
Hm, thats also true
Yeah. Perhaps.
am i cutting ?
a bit, yeah
now i dont hear anyone
how was my reading ?
good actually
@keen pasture Do you want to read?
i have a weird accent , i dont sound like anyone idk if its just me xD
@stark saffron You're just listening, right?
@wary atlas What do you think about the idea that a native reads after the learner is finish with correct pronounciation
I wasn't asking for this lesson in particular
no worries dude @narrow bane
but rather as a general observation to maybe consider for future readings or I might just do a session on pronunciation
@wary atlas Yes
Probably a pronunciation session would be useful too
Some stuff came up and I have to leave early. A special thank you for hosting the session! See you all later
gotcha :>
@sacred grove yeah
In regards to maybe
Wer

@hollow narwhal Your turn to read.

Stiftung Lesen is a non-profit organization based in Mainz, Germany under the patronage of Joachim Gauck. Stiftung Lesen acts as a stakeholder for reading promotion on a national and international level.

@narrow bane
I'm like making myself from place a to place b
Das Wort "Warft" irritiert mich immerzu total, hab das noch nie zuvor gehört

"Die Halligen erheben sich nur wenige Meter ĂŒber dem Meeresspiegel, weshalb sie wĂ€hrend einer starken Flut mit Ausnahme der Warften, kĂŒnstlich aufgeschĂŒtteten HĂŒgeln, auf denen die HĂ€user stehen, ĂŒberspĂŒlt werden (âLandunterâ)"
Is up first naybe

@stark saffron Are you still reading or no?
Thanks for reading, everyone!!
Thanks for hosting it
thanks for being patient and explaining , i learned alot today @wary atlas đ
Missed it... Oh well perhaps next time
@boreal zealot If you go to #botchannel and type >sub Reading, you will get pinged for the next session, if you want that.
thank you đ
Any ETA on the next session?
Hey! I host a pronunciation session!
---> When? Today 17:00 (UTC + 1)
---> Where? In the Lessons Voice Channel
---> How? You read a text out loud and we practice the pronunciation of difficult words together! We want to read some articles similar to those of Basementality's awesome reading sessions!
---> Everyone is welcome! đ
<@&526087868079144961>
There will be a pronunciation/reading session today. See inspyre's post above for details.
Interesting, I'll try to attend
Iâll be there
when will it start
but timezone
is the lesson after 1 hour?
im in UTC + 3
@boreal zealot it's 6 PM now?
yes after 1 hour so
k
can I ask you where are you from? đ
from Turkey
welcome
to?
welcome to anything
Hey! in 1 hour, 17:00 ( UTC + 1)
hey @boreal zealot so is it okay for A1 level?
@boreal zealot very good! cool
Vocs are for which level?
I've a German exam tomorrow
but it's school exam so pretty easy
I have prepared texts in diffrent levels
k
I've a question in pronounciation
idk if it's hochdeutsch or österreiches deutsch
You can ask the question in the lesson đ Memorize it or write it down
I've heard of people pronouncing der like derer
with a weird r
is it possible that they said derer
ah yes derer
it's pronounced like that in Hochdeutsch?
or in weird mĂŒnich dialect?
it's a genitive attribute 'Die Wut derer, die sich betrogen fĂŒhlen...'
Is that what you're talking about or is it really about pronunciation?
it's not in genetive
it's generally pronounced like that
regardless of case
I mean
for example
der Fehler you pronounce this as "derer Fehler"
Hm, than I would need to hear in context to know what you're talking about.
Hm, I would really need to hear an example because right now I have no idea. You can ask insypre later though :)
k
it doesn't depend on a context though
Yes I'm also not 100% sure how you mean it, just ask it later. Than I can hear how you pronounce it then
k
perfect would be if you could find an example of a native doing it
like a time stamp for a video :>
uhh
some of germans pronounce der like normal one
just like der
but some of germans pronounce it differently
I don't think it depends on a context
Would still be nice to have a example
I find that words with Ă€ ĂŒ ö before "ch" or "rcht" pretty difficult to pronounce
Okay, thanks
Ich wĂŒrde gerne teilnehmen, aber jetzt ist 23 Uhr und morgen muss ich zur Arbeit gehen đȘ
Ok, schade. Vielleicht ja ein anderes mal
they exist also in Turkish
you basically pronounce umlaut a as ae
Turkish doesn't have all the umlaut sounds
it's my native language btw
The Turkish ö is only one of the possible sound
wym short <letter> ?
We do
it does exist
Oh it does? :)
ye
"ĂŒzĂŒm" if you are talking about the vowel length
It doesn't show that as a different sound based on wiki
Well that's what the pronunciation lesson is for
So it's a good time to ask questions
yËzym
BĂŒcher
Open and closed?
Yes
u and ĂŒ
No
ĂŒ is softer
I'm talking about ĂŒ in BĂŒcher vs FĂŒnf
they're same ĂŒ
Not in IPA
the ĂŒ in bĂŒcher is pronounced a bit softer than the one in fĂŒnf
The Ă in BĂŒcher and FĂŒnf are pronounced very diffrently
anyway
ima get back to my physics homework rn
will be here when lesson is available
See you in a bit frosty
cya
@strange valve Wrong channel.
Np. đ
I didn't realize it
Important for the pronounciation lession
Make sure you are close to your microphone so that everyone can understand you well.
You can check your Mic in the Discord settings and hear yourself there. Maybe you need to lower the mic sensitivity if you sound a bit choppy
<@&526087868079144961>
The pronunciation learning session will begin now in the Lessons VC.
fĂŒrchten
befĂŒrchten
Where are we now o.o
Ich werde den Computer neu starten, um zu versuchen, das Mikrofon zu reparieren
not yet, just listening
Viel GlĂŒck mp
@storm turret do you want to try?
@hollow narwhal ?
Eichhörnchen
agitate?
Maybe hazing
Ohrhörer
How do you know which 'r' to pronounce.. so the r from the back or from the front đ
It's closer to more where the g is?
A Ă O Ă U Ă
schĂŒtteln
hai
me back
where are we reading
hello
Regierung
die Regierung
difference between the long u and the short ?
I think we're are here:
Mit angsteinflöĂenden Holzmasken oder als Hexen und Teufel verkleidet ziehen die Menschen durch die StraĂen und hoffen, @boreal zealot
How do you do Rua?
https://www.really-learn-english.com/english-pronunciation-lesson-27-L-sound.html You should use the light L
In English there is both dark and light L
Sorry I should leave, goodbye
no sorry just listening

Just listening
What happened to the lesson

And the rest of the people in the channel are afk
when will you make a lesson again? :(
I dont know yet, I will announce it here in the Channel
my exams are gonna finish this week
so I can finally attend lessons
Thanks by the way for the lesson @boreal zealot
đ no problem, I hope you learned something
I've German and Turkish exams at the same time tomorrow
Today's lesson was useful for my pronounciation
Thats great to hear
i learned the word "eichhörnchen"
i will never forget it
because i saw this after an hour from the lesson
if my guess is correct...its an earcleaner for squirellsđ
Looks like a brainwasher
i dont think they sit on it lol
but where do they get the nuts from this thing
i have no ideađ
But I dont even know where I could find a squirrel
i dont think that has anything to do with squirrels. its jus a ear cleaning tooll
*lol
idk wtf it has to do with squirrels tho
@hollow narwhal @untold dove missed you all
That's enough to get an A tag

Hey everyone! I'm not doing a reading session this week, but I'll probably do one next weekend (29th or so). However, this ping isn't specifically for the session.
I just wanted to share this Hörspiel of the story we've been reading in the recent sessions, in case anyone is interested in listening to it. (Starts at around 6:05) https://youtu.be/6QeDF7yqZ0c?t=365

im sorry but i got a ghost ping here and im trying to get rid of it with this message
it didnt work
I severely doubt it
I also severely doubt it
<@&526087868079144961>
Hey everyone! I'll be hosting a reading session this Saturday at 20:00 CET. We'll hopefully be reading either `die Physiker' or carrying on from where Base left off with the Witcher books (both B2+), but this remains flexible in regards to the level of the group who'd like to join. I'll be looking forward to seeing you there!! :peepoCheer:
Yay, die physiker hype
tfw you can't peepocheer

peepoCheer

peepoCheer
peepocheer
It's alright, im p flexible with the times too
@runic badge when would work for you
Oh no please don't reschedule just bc of me I'll just join in next time
nah I'm flexible enough where I don't mind when we do it, I'd rather have more people than less đ
Anyone hosting A1 style lessons?
Yep, I'll host a Level A lesson this weekend. I think I'll be doing a grammar session, but I'll announce it properly a bit later today.
group ping Grammar Hey learners! I'm going to host a Level A1 (beginner) grammar session tomorrow at 5pm UTC (19 hours from now). Anyone is welcome to join. Not sure what topic I'll do yet but feel free to make a request below if you have a specific topic you want to learn about.

Sorry for the ping issue btw. Idk why it doesn't work. đ
@wary atlas try but your message in quotes and then ping?

Base isnt mod?????
Sorry but that's not an A1 level topic.
Demodded Base so he can concentrate on lessons.
I would love to learn about the two past tenses, where to use them, their differences. Not sure if thats interesting or the correct level.
I said this above but donât know if it got lost. But Iâd love to learn about different prepositions and when to use them
prepositions would be really helpful
^
<@&526087863339843585>
Hey everyone! Sorry for the late notice on this, but I'm going to change the A1 Grammar session to 5pm Sunday UTC, which is 28 hours from now.
This is so it doesn't conflict too much with the reading session that's going to be held today (in case there are people who want to attend both). We will be doing past tense and a bit of info on prepositions after that. I'll also try to arrange a more in depth prepositions workshop in the near future!

We need a "not native, but knows more grammar than native :)" role :P
lol
ich kenn mich bestens mit der Grammatik aus
Ich nicht xD
doch intuitiv
vermutet; nutzen beide ohne ĂŒ
bei mir ist es inzwischen intuitiv, doch kann ich mich noch an die grammatischen Einzelheiten erinnern
unsichtbar ist nicht unsicher
is "achten" always attached to "auf"
I don't think so

I am learning german today
lol
may i ask where are you reading from ?
thank you
Split into two channels after this article, because we're so many people in the channel?
How would the channel be split?
by level?
Random, I dunno
i think by level will be more suitable
A1-A2, B1-C ?
Gute idee
