There is a book called Basic German in the resource list which you can use.

Hi everyone!
I'm planning on starting a lesson for more advanced (I guess B and up) learners in which we'll read through a 'classic' German novel together, discussing content and language. Since we wouldn't be able to read the whole thing in one session, this lesson requires a bit more organization and planning.

For now I'd just love to know if there's any interest in doing something like that.

If you're interested, please ping me or DM me by May 2nd. 8pm CEST so that I can notify you about further planning and finding a proper time/date.

Regarding the novel, I'm open for suggestions. Thus far, I've considered 'Zwischen neun und neun' by Leo Perutz which is even set in lovely Weeno and features the Weeno dialect.
I can provide the pdf for this one.
(But y'all know I'm always in for a little Kafka gecko )

The objective of this lesson is to give everyone the awesome feeling of completing an entire classical German novel, to practice reading native German aloud, to introduce idioms and new vocabulary, and to discuss content with fellow participants.

Classical German literature isn't as scary as you might think, I promise.

My dad can speak it at about B2 or C1 as a stretch, so he pretty much started teaching me when I was a kid. And accents are just practice and exposure I guess. I can usually trick random people on the street into believing I'm Austrian if I don't talk too much and fuck up basic grammar. :^)

Ooof see. I don't think the style of writing of either book is particularly complicated for classical german literature but I'm not very good at estimating which level would suit which text.

Since we're reading the novel together and discuss vocab/idioms and such you don't have to be too scared though.
I think B upwards would be best to get the most out of it because basic grammar shouldn't be an issue anymore with those levels.
If you're interested you can always join and listen for a while to evaluate if you feel comfortable participating. :)

We’re currently reading the novel Zwischen neun und neun by Leo Perutz.
The objective of this lesson is to give everyone the awesome feeling of completing an entire classical German novel, to practice reading native German aloud, to introduce idioms and new vocabulary, and to discuss content with fellow participants.

We will have two sessions a week covering the same parts of the novel so that as many interested members of the server have the opportunity to participate as possible.
They will be identical, so you only have to attend the one most convenient for you each week.
And don't worry if you have to sit out for a week; I will provide a summary for the covered content so that you can rejoin the following week.

But i guess I did not focus that much and there were no such a thing as practice of the language.

as a result, i can understand about 50% what people talking about and I can read well, but I cannot speak (since it is a different type of the skill).

The lessons vary in terms of level. It basically depends on who wants to host them and what activities they want to do.

But usually you should have some past knowledge, though anyone is allowed to listen in.

You can use #questions to ask specific questions you have, #beginner-german to practice German stuff with other people if you want to, #writing to post writing that you practice and want corrected, and any discussion channel, such as #general or #general-2 , to practice chatting in German.

Classroom-esque material would be helpful. Especially since duolingo teaches mainly vocab with little grammer

Plus textbooks and books on the subject

How to get started
The simplest way to learn German is to find topics you don’t understand yet and search for explanations of them. This list provides you with a guide for which topics to learn if you are completely new to German. Type the topic into Google (or YouTube) and start learning!

Introduction
1: Alphabet (especially ä, ü, ö and ß)
2: Basic greetings (hello, goodbye, etc.)

Part 1 - Simple Sentence
1: Noun gender & plurals
2: Nominative case (What are cases?)
3: Nominative pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc.)
4: Verbs in present tense
5: Definite/indefinite articles
6: Accusative case (for nouns)
7: Accusative pronouns
8: Word order of simple sentences
9: How to ask questions

Tips

Always learn the gender of a noun when you learn a new noun
Learn to use a translation dictionary (e.g. dict.cc, leo.org)
Use >faq resources to see our list of German learning resources
For listening and pronunciation practice, try watching movies or videos (incl. YouTube)
You can listen to pronunciation for words on websites like dict.cc, forvo.com, and others
Practice writing sentences every day (and asking people to correct them)
Ask as many questions as possible
Don’t be scared to make mistakes!!!! If you don’t let yourself make mistakes, you will never be able to learn German
