Maybe Peter killed Max and is hiding the body. 🤔
And then Max' ghost came back to do the same to Peter.
The body fell on top of Peter so he couldn't be found
New plan: German is too complex, Juan teach us Spanish instead.
A si podemos tambien empezar con español
I can teach Spanish 🙂 👍
¿Te dije alguna vez sobre el tiempo que robé tres gusanos?
No, he creado una granja de gusanos. Esperaba que se reprodujeran y yo conquistaría el mundo con mi nuevo ejército de gusanos. Pero resulta que el gusano son soldados horribles. Ni siquiera podía matar a un solo hombre.
I'm still a bit confused about "Denn dann machen_______ meine Familie und ich auf den Weg nach Italien." Anyone able to explain why it's "sich"? (here or in #questions if that's more appropriate)
sich auf den Weg machen is a set phrase which always requires a reflexive pronoun
it's fancy for "aufbrechen"
Oh, he wants to know why we go for sich and not uns or something.
Exactly
I also wanna know this
it's a set phrase yo. you always have to use sich because thats just how the phrase is formed™
So no matter who's going, you use "sich"?
Ah so it's just a common set expression
that might sound disappointing but theres no other way of explaining it
well, you could say "wir machen uns auf den Weg"
sie (die Familie) -> singular -> sich
thats why you have sich
But isn't "my family and I" = "we"?
Oh I'm so sorry, I misread that. Yeah, it should be uns in that case
My bad
"Meine Familie und ich machen uns auf den Weg nach X"
thought so.
Okay, then it makes sense. Thanks!
Gotcha
you always have to use sich because thats just how the phrase is formed™
“ich mache sich auf dem Weg” is definitely 600 percent wrong tbh 😛
den
damn n and m keys 😠
Nah, I was referring to that sentence in particular ❤
it is now
Yes.
It's the past participle of hinaufstarren. Which is hinauf (up) + starren (stare).
nach [dort] oben starren to quote Duden.
unterricht
@boreal zealot err, why is there only one "uns" here? https://prnt.sc/g1klg8
Oh thats a bit mean of them. See it like that "Dann macht sich meine Familie auf den Weg." They're leaving and you just happen to come with them. Since we have two objects (die Familie u. Ich) that form the actual subject, we have to change the verb as well: er/sie/es macht -> sie machen. It's a weird case but this time you don't have to change sich to uns since it mainly refers to your family.
What's the reason that the family is the "main" object?
Also, would it be wrong to use "uns" here?
Family is the main object because it got mentioned first. Using "uns" would be wrong in this case
Hmm, would it then be "mich" if it was "ich und meine Familie"?
no, the subjects in the sentence are still the same, the order is just switched. I am not 100% confident in this explanation but: you could imagine "meine Familie und ich" as "sie", which thus takes "sich" in reflexive
@ruby ocean well, the explanation from @boreal zealot seems to indicate the order matters. And surely "meine familie und ich" is equivalent to "wir", not "sie"
I am not sure why the order of how the subjects are presented would matter as the two subjects are taken as one to determine the "person" of the sentence, but naturally I could be wrong. Yes, I should have been more clear, I was imagining it as if someone else was taking about it from a third person perspective but that would obviously change the subjective case rendering my point moot. I initially agreed with you that it seems logical that it should be "uns" and I am not honestly sure how to explain why it should be "sich". Everything I can think of in English would be "us" or "ourselves" which would be "uns"
now that I think about it more, I think the text is wrong
surely it should be "uns"
I have looked at other examples, such as:
Meine Familie und ich fühlen uns diesem Feriendomizil
Meine Familie und ich trafen uns mit der Blindengruppe
The subjects are the same and it is logical they should be "uns", so I am not sure why the text should be different
I was thinking of it being a weird case of German of just being different from English, as it can be, but in this case I think not
I agree that that would be the logical answer, but @boreal zealot is a native speaker and didn't think so
then we shall have to wait for him/her to return or another native speaker to answer
I could ask my girlfriend as well one moment
well she seems to agree with @boreal zealot, as it does seem to be at the actual order of it
you were right, my bad lol
I never expected that when thinking in English about it
@ruby ocean Does she say it should be "mich" if the order is switched?
no, "uns"
still two subjects
Well yeah, but it seems you could make exactly the same argument for "mich" with the reverse order as with "sich" with the original order
Oh well
yeah, this is new to me, I am going to look this up
there will be something about this
bit troll of German grammar if it is the order of what gets chosen rather than the subject itself
Seems like a bit of an edge case, might be hard to find info on it
Wonder if this also applies if you have "you and those other guys" vs "those other guys and you"
with euch and sich
you'd think so
since the second person would just be then plural
can't seem to find anything - honestly not sure what to search - so might ask on the German stackexchange
Okay, please shoot me a link if you do
okay, made a question, probably get an answer tomorrow though: https://german.stackexchange.com/questions/38093/why-does-the-reflexive-pronoun-change-in-this-case-when-the-subject-is-moved-fro
I'll notify you when I do
it's a bit different from what we discussed after I discussed it with my girlfriend

Haha. Stackoverflow memes. ❤
Stackexchange sites have a reputation for being not very welcoming to new users.
So we were memeing a bit, yeah.
I've had that bullshit happen before
@ruby ocean Wait, so what did your gf say about those last two sentences?
they're grammatically correct but it is impolite to put "ich" first
Oh, then we might have misunderstood each other, when I asked about switching the order I meant the order of the subjects, not the word order
Yep, looks like it
@ruby ocean Well, you got a reply, although I don't understand it
yeah, if his explanation is correct then I don't understand it either
all I did was move the subject
how does that make it become something else?
his answer is what I initially thought before thinking over it
and I don't think the type of person changes if I move it, or does it?
What do you guys actually do during reading circles? I've been in this server for a while now but I'm too shy to join in.
Oh, really? That's great then. I'll join in when I have time.
To answer your actual question though, the person running the session links us to a text and we each take turns reading a sentence and translating it (with help if we need any).
And we generally discuss things related to the text as well. Depends on the session though.
Oh, okay. That sounds interesting
@quartz otter The answerer added a clarification which made it a bit more clear. Can't say I entirely understand it now but I guess that's just the way it is
@ruby ocean Does your gf agree that "Meine Familie und ich machen sich dann auf den Weg nach Italien." is a valid sentence?
The person who replied at stack seems to be claiming that you can freely choose between sich and uns, and that changes the person, ie. the word order isn't actually what matters?
I'll ask her
it might be a case of using reflexive verbs like the passive voice
because you can't form the passive voice with reflexive verbs
as they're sorta already are
Maybe the "Meine Familie und ich" order can take both forms, but the "Dann machen" order can only take "sich" ...
@boreal zealot did say "uns" would be wrong in the latter
Yall had grammar?
about Reflexive pronouns?
i have no idea what i missed in the last couple of days tbh
Meine Familie macht sich auf den Weg
Wir machen uns auf den Weg
you can choose either sich or uns in this case, depending on what you want to refer to
both work for me
@leaden verge What about the sentence "Dann machen ___ meine Familie und ich auf den Weg nach Italien"?
my gf agrees it is a valid sentence
Sich? i suck with reflexive
it's the same but i would prefer "sich" in this case as it is closer to "meine Familie"
is it a case of passive vs active voice whether it's sich or uns, or no?
in this case
it is more a case of what you see as the subject of the sentence
or you could put sich anywhere
that don't make sense to my English brain
@leaden verge If the sentence is "Meine Familie and ich machen ___ dann auf den Weg nach Italien", does your preference change?
In the "sich" version, is it sort of like you're only talking about "my family" but the "und ich" is more like "my family (which includes myself)"?
Rather than "my family" and "myself" as seperate things.
@wary atlas nice avi
there i would put either depending on wether you see "Meine Familie and ich" as a chain of subjects or as one big subject of the sentence
Danke.
Bitte
so you can emphasise whether you care more about a particular subject of the subjects or a subject as a whole with the type of reflexive pronoun you use?
hard question, i guess yeah, but i cannot come up with a situation like this where it would actually make a difference
i guess "Meine Familie and ich machen uns auf den Weg" sounds a bit more like one group than "Meine Familie and ich machen sich auf den Weg"
but i have to really think about it to notice any difference
spam sich
Thank you, @leaden verge, that clarifies things a bit
it seems that what i wrote is not technically correct though
How come?
"Dann machen uns meine Familie und ich auf den Weg nach Italien"
is not supposed to be grammatically correct, but i would still use it tbh
What makes it ungrammatical then?
Does this specific word order force you to use the third person? Or is ""Meine Familie and ich machen uns dann auf den Weg nach Italien" also technically wrong?
"Meine Familie and ich machen uns dann auf den Weg nach Italien" is correct because you could just substitute "Meine Familie and ich" for "Wir"
I think "Dann machen uns meine Familie und ich auf den Weg nach Italien" does not work because the sentence structure does not allow for the same replacement
if you were to put "sich/uns" after the subject it would work
i think you can only put "sich" in front of the subject if it really is "sich" not "mich/dich/uns/euch"
"Sie machen sich dann auf den Weg nach Italien" is equally valid, right? Having it become "sie" doesn't remove the fact "ich" is included in the "sie", due to it being clear by context? For example two sentences:
Meine Familie und ich bereiten vor. Sie machen sich dann auf den Weg nach Italien.
oh right, forgot it's "sich" when you're doing it
okay thanks
I guess in English it would always be "us" or "ourselves" when "I" is included, hence the confusion
In Norwegian as well
<@&229594762762649601> no reading circle today, sorry for telling so late. I'll try to fill this hole up as soon as I can, but due to work, it might be hard the next few weeks.
the one next week should still take place
What's the reading circle?
you read in a virtual circle
like we pick some text, usually for A1-A2
then take turns reading and translating lines
its fun
A'ight! Once a week?
😢
@sharp wind From what I know yes, it's once a week. Correct me if I'm wrong please
#282831147942281216 says "Saturdays at 19:00 CET, and Sundays at 20:00 CET"
it depends, we had one on friday too
I checked the pinned messages and it seems like it's one link every 7days but maybe they read the same thing two days in a row?. Like they split it in two or so
Hey
I'd love to read some Faust, some day, honestly.
why not
but that would be C1-C2
But why not arrange also B and C Reading Sessions?
What would that entail?
Reading a paragraph and voicing out our opinions about said paragraph?
It's not really a matter of "need". Technically no one "needs" a reading circle. But if Bs and Cs want to learn together, that seems like an excellent idea.
I imagine it would be more similar to the book club idea I've seen tossed around
But with shorter articles and such
@boreal zealot Why are you opposed to it exactly?
Focused on the language aspect insofar as participants would use German
How so?
Even a native speaker of a language can learn from a reading circle in that language. As an example, I study English constantly as a writer, and discussing language with others is incredibly beneficial for that.
Okay, fair point. In that case, let's agree not to make the reading circles mandatory.
.....
kids
we're all adults here, right?
most likely the ones at B2 and Cs are at least 20 years old
The competency of being a B2 and later C, is measured by being able to voice out or write a complicated idea with your own understanding. I think although it might perhaps devolve into shits and giggles, it could probably be interesting to talk in German on certain articles or ideas and speak it
my issue on this particular segment, is that we're doing it in the VC, which would probably only entail one person speaking at a time, and the rest listening
which would mean you probably don't get a lot of chances to practice it out
a 3 person or 4 person group would probably be good
I'm just saying, that your experience with kids, who learn German "because it's part of the curriculum" are not the same as with people who do have to learn for the sake of their degree or their future
hence I mean, the result and atmosphere could be different
So in effect youre saying that the reading circle is moot?
oh this was 5 hours ago

Hard to tell, I can say that I'm at work every saturday, and as it's looking that might extend to friday and sunday
Weekdays are best for me, but hard for most others
usually anytime after 19h00 CEST Monday-Thursday
whats your job
Kitchen-y person, hopefully moving from washing dishes to general aide soon
From 19 until ...?
23h ish, can go later though

i have pretty difficult text so whenever you need one you can ask me
What's schon?
Okay, let's meet at Mon 22h CET and anyone else who wants to join can do so. Sounds good, Callum?
@loud fjord What context?
"Der Sommer ist schon fast "
The summer is almost ...
iin my textbook we have words such as Exilchilene
Aight thanks, sorry started only yesterday
and Rohrpostleitung
schon fast - (already), almost
fast - almost
schon - already
Okay, what is the meaning of that full sentence?
Der Sommer ist schon fast wieder vorbei
yes
no, the sentence is incorrect
Der Sommer ist (schon) fast ... -> The summer is almost ...
Do you guys have a simple text for me ?
look at the pinned messages
why is it incorrect?
if you started yesterday you may wanna check out memrise or duolingo to get a more structured intro 👀
I think this is the wrong channel for these questions, sorry to point it out. 😄
Yea it's what I'm doing
"The summer is almost" is also an incorrect sentence, because it's not finished
it's the same with the german one
I'm french Native and alot of words don't even exist in french so it's hard
"Der Sommer ist schon fast wieder vorbei" why is this incorrect?
thats correct
okay
What does that means?
the summer is almost gone
- again
"The summer is almost over again"
wieder is gone?
but the is was missing in the translation
Wieder is again
when did you say the reading circle starts?
7pm CET.
@loud fjord wrote a wrong translation
Der Sommer ist schon fast wieder vorbei is correctly translated as The summer is almost over again
Wouldn't it be the summer is already almost over again?
Nass has only one meaning? (Wet)? Or has more?
usually only one
@wind marten cet or cest? 🤔
what is CET?
It is currently 4:14pm CET.
I'll miss it again. 😦
How much time left because I think it should have started already
Or maybe there's something wrong with the time cinversion for me that
What time is it for you guys (CET)
Do you see what I wrote 1 hour ago?
lol ok
M O N D A Y wtf
Monday? XD
that's spooky
@rugged cedar CET and CEST are the same time zones, both +1 when compared to GMT, it's just that CEST is used in the summer but I was too lazy to write the S
just kinda hoped that people know that cest is used in the summer
wrong wormic, 3pm cet is 4pm cest
summer time (fast forwarding time 1 hour) is the difference
ye I know
they aren't the same time
but the same countries use these 2 time zones
and they swap when it's summer/winter time
yes, i was just hinting at that difference, since i didnt know whether or not you were aware.
so in 1.5h from now is the session then
if we go by CEST, it would be in around 30 min, if we go by CET then it was supposed to be half an hour ago
you said 7pm cet, rn it's 6.34 cest, aka 5.34 cet
lol
wait what even is ther eading circle again, i actually forgot
you have a text, of which people read a sentence each, turn by turn, and translate it
am shooketh
oh boy
Cant attend guys watching football

haha
tape the match, come to the lesson
tape wormic the lesson, come to the game
