Hey Dev guys, I read your announcement a while ago and I feel the weight of your choices.
Hah, we just launched our game to good reception after working on it as semi-hobbyists for 4 years, so hopefully you'll appreciate that I sympathise with you quite well.

It's a tough decision to make whether you want to fight it out as a robocraft-like or become something different. But I believe you should fight it out.
As an idiot who does not know your project's state, the cost of server upkeep, or anything in relation to your general levels of exhaustion or financial stability. Here is my unsolicited opinion.

You have put a tremendous amount of effort into a very appealing, pretty, good sounding, and fun bot builder. You have enjoyable movement, quality flight feel, a pleasing array of weapons with pleasing behaviour, and a set of fun maps that don't leave me bored.
The performance is good, the lag is minimal and unobtrusive (and I play from South-Africa with ~170ms ping!!!! ), the menus are intuitive and clean to read and understandable especially as an ex-robocrafter.

All in all you have a foundationally solid and pleasing game with non of the emotional-baggage that comes with being Freejam (RIP).
You are frighteningly well poised to make a game that fills the void of Robocraft and delivers exceptionally on that front.

Yes there are of course imperfections, but balance and bugs are eternal and players love games - despite their flaws.
Games are hated, or ignored due to their primary failures. Robocraft is a tried and successful pattern that you have executed well. Your primary is fine. You also have none of the junk that killed the original since you have learnt from their failures and successes.
Finally you are open to the community, and rapidly take in feedback and execute on it. Which to me - clearly says you are able to correct any failures / mistakes that you do inevitably make. Which is the most important trait.

You should try, and see what happens on Steam.

I think the option's presented were to fight it out as a spiritual successor to robocraft, or use the frame work to create a completely different fighter game

#

Luke is suggesting the former over the latter
