@autumn crag Made a thread for this while we have a look at it

#

Right-click menu

#

If it doesn't show anything are you able to go to %appdata%\Vortex and drop your network.log file into this chat

autumn crag
#

Unhiding the version now shows an icon indicating the mod is out of date

#

And clicking it did, finally, update the mod successfully like it should

shut fox
#

Ok, if you had the version column hidden, that would explain why you didn't know there was an update

autumn crag
#

No, I knew there was an update, but Vortex was not detecting it as needing updated

#

I didn't change anything in the side panel there - it had all the information already

shut fox
#

It probably was, but the icon to do the update is only shown in version column

autumn crag
#

I was running the "Check for updates" interaction

#

Seems a little silly that I need that column displayed for Vortex to acknowledge that updates are a thing that exists

shut fox
#

Yes, so Vortex probably found the update, but you had the place where it shows you this information hideen

autumn crag
#

But, thank you

shut fox
#

To be honest, I'm surpised that you have "Deploy order" showing but not "Version". I'd be interested to know the process that lead you to that?

#

Deploy order is basically irrelevant for Stardew Valley.

#

The other games I'm using Vortex to mod are Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4

shut fox
#

It's a fair point though that if you do hide the column you lose out on that info.

#

I hadn't really considered any use case where hiding that column would be desired tbh

autumn crag
#

My confusion arose because when you run the "Check for updates" interaction, it will send a notification saying "Checking for updates blah blah" with progress. When it's complete it will send another notification.

shut fox
#

I'm collating feedback on Vortex specifically in how it works for SDV so I'll add this to my notes tomorrow

autumn crag
#

That notification was "No updates were found" even though I, the user, was fully aware an update should have been found.

#

So that's why I was sure Vortex was somehow missing it. I don't know why it said there wasn't one except in that one spot in the version column.

shut fox
#

I believe Vortex 1.6+ silently checks for updates on startup. So if it had already "found" the update it wouldn't report it as a new update again.

autumn crag
#

I hope this can be adjusted in the future since that's very unintuitive.

shut fox
#

It's an interesting use case though. I do agree that maybe that kind of data needs to be higher levelled

#

I'll leave this thread open to show to the developers and design team in the morning.

I'm not super experienced at modding games and I'm currently recovering from a surgery, so I'm a great example of a user that is too stupid to figure out how the mod manager works.

shut fox
#

I wouldn't say you were stupid 🙂

autumn crag
#

So now you know you need to idiotproof it some more? 🤔

shut fox
#

I appreciate you took the time to talk through this and I hope your recovery goes well!

autumn crag
#

Thank you!

I also realised I said "tomorrow" but I actually mean Monday. Keep forgetting it's Friday

I mean if I need to lookup a particular version number, I open the side panel to check it. seeing all of them all the time was not useful to me.

Yes, if you have a lot of columns displaying, or if the mod has a particularly long name, it can get cluttered. I'm somewhat cognitively impaired even on a good day (i.e., not recovering from a surgery), so I try to reduce clutter and hide unnecessary information so I don't get confused/overwhelmed. I didn't think I needed to see the version number, because I thought it would notify me someplace else if something was out of date.
