The pattern should be subtle, the red cape should catch the eye first, and then further study reveal the pattern.

Well, the red eye will catch your eye first. Then you'll notice the glow on the face around it, which is indeed well done. Further examination reveals the errant glow on the opposite eye. That's just how we take in and process information. Recognize and understand first, then we can start noticing details or discrepancies. It's the same when text is not arranged porprely.

Oh, seeing some of the emojis, let me comment on the differences.

First, the eyes. Left is an almond shape, but right has a more distinct rounded portion, comparatively. Next, their eyebrows. Left is angled more, steeper / sharper, whereas right is more flat. Left cannot be made more flat than it is, nor can it be made as thick as the right one. The noses are fairly identical, but some noses have more of a bulbous point than these and cannot be changed. The lips are similar, (right is thicker) but the colors are different- this is not a sticker, but one face just permits for "lipstick" color more obviously than the right.

These are things that are "fixed" and cannot be modified further or adjusted specifically.

Playing with these very small details and finding the right balance to achieve the look you want is what the challenge is.
