From what i understand and in simple terms: the training set has 2 sets/groups of images, one for input and one for the target. the model attempts to change the inputs so it artistically looks like the target. I dont mean make a copy of a target image, but rather understand the patterns and features that are unique to the target and apply that to the input.

Diffusion based image generation models work by taking training images (and related text prompts), converting it into noise, then asking the model to recreate the image. so if you give the model a different random noise (and a prompt), it should create a new image. Image translation works by converting your input into partial noise then asking the model to get rid of the noise. but since the model is trained to recreate images of a certain style (training set), itll get rid of the noise in a way that looks like your training set

how the ai works under the hood is kinda unknown, and you can make a case for both sides of the "ai is stealing art" argument imo
