yes most boss content is like this. there's certain dmg theshold to get 100% loot. hitting it once wont be enough unless 'hitting once' actually did some damage. i remember going to moake as a support build bard all alone and all i got was providence stone thats why being in a party actually boost your chance of getting full reward since everyone helps in reaching the theshold

Go for 4th and 5th character with the upcoming summer Punika Powerpass and Express event. And for the express character just knowledge transfer all of the story quests. It's worth the gold for time saved.

Yeah, Support is usually a good introduction to harder content. Lets you focus on doing mechanics, in between just spamming support skills.
Just make sure you've got Heavy Armor so you won't die so easy.

For more consistent regular gold income, you're getting ~1200g in sellable leapstones from rested Night Fox Yoho(Guardian Raid) every 3 days.
Get multiple characters to 1370 and you can just multiply that value many times over :)

If you're short on time don't be afraid letting your Chaos Dungeons and Guardian Raids get rested.
Every unused entry still gives you half the reward assuming you make use of the rest bonus later.
Unused entry gives +10 rest, and at 20 rest you get double rewards for 1 run and -20 rest.
If doing only fully rested runs you're essentially getting -66% time for -33% rewards. Double the rewards per time.

don't sleep on alts, do your stronghold dispatches daily, and make sure to use life energy

In addition to the guides linked, here's a few tips regarding general priorities:
Focus on doing daily/weekly content over other horizontal content(like random islands).
The ingame task tracker is decent for keeping track of that.

Start making use of alts as soon as you can. This mainly means spending your Powerpasses soon after you get them so you can start building that roster. More characters means multiple times more rewards.
Use the Express Event on your main if you're still in Tier 1 and haven't used it yet.

Don't feel the need to do Guardian Raids and Chaos Dungeons every day. Each unused entry is +10 rest and at 20 rest you get double rewards for 1 run and -20 rest. Doing only rested runs means -66% time and -33% rewards; double rewards per time.

I'm sure there's an engraving guide somewhere. Try to find that.
Random card packs are fine to use at any point in the game. Just don't use the "choose" packs, the ones where you get to choose card are extra valuable and best kept for when you need to fill a hole of missing cards.

Like Hermit said, you do have limited collection slots for cards, but just progress at a decent rate and you'll earn enough gold to buy crystals you can use to expand the card slots available.
