I do not ever spent coins on mats. Coins are pain to get and I try to do all sailing events daily and do compass islands with coin chest reward. And I need so many of them for ship upgrades and crew.

The first event gave a lot of pirate coins that is what helped me, maybe on next patch we can get some good event to help on that issue as well. But what can you do for now, is getting yourself the adventure islands that give 6x chests of 100x coins usually. And for pirate coins you can trade your sun coins for that.

what also helps are sea bounties - higher levels it's pretty much an extra good res sailor. I can run the cheapest sailors with that extra res and do all sea content, but it's a long ride and requires you to do rapport/stronghold merchants/tome completion. This is the bonus at 41
