largely you should just do the main quest. You can do sidequests if you want, they generally don't take much longer. Chain quests(they have a different icons) also have interesting rewards. Up to you mostly, some ppl want to rush to 50 asap to start the "real" game, some like doing everything on the way. You're not really missing anything if you skip as you can always come back so it's a personal choice
