there is a rather massive range in how skillfully a group can leverage a support's buffs

with proper game knowledge and coordination, you can straight up ignore some boss mechanics via shield/dmg reduction abuse and just sit there and dps the boss instead, tanking the hit

the most relevant example would be, while not a support, gunlancer's ult giving the party immunity to paralyze vs yoho and ignoring the tornado atk entirely giving you like 20s of free hits
