No it just disables them from using certain abilities. It's tedious and if you're unlucky they leave immediately and grow it back.

its always worth buying the oreha chests imo, you can roll more jewelry (if you've crafted your gear already ) and make way more gold back than you spent, or you get materials in return, its a win/win either way. Just my opinion though. Its entirely up to you where you are in progression.
