if you look at details tab in character profile you can see your phy. and mag. defenses/damage reductions. heavy armor increases those by X amount depending on your existing defenses.
Damage calculation is easy if we ignore all other buffs. (dmg x grudge[1.2]) x damage reduction as decimal = taken dmg.
