it's pretty even afaik, 100% purple vs 50% (1purple + 1blue) + 25% (1 purple) + 25% (1 blue), if you value a blue at 1/3 a purple, these two methods have the exact same expected value. hope that helps and gamble as you please

Am I missing something or is that simply a terrible design choice?

If so, what are we supposed to do? Keep the storage filled with pieces of gear that have the tripods you want until you get to max ilvl?
Otherwise it seems like a waste setting the tripods you need just to lose them when progressing to the next gear.
