Only the vern knowledge transfer gives you a gear chest. The rest require a certain ilvl that you can see on the left. You need to reach that ilvl first. All they do is complete that continents quests. Its not worth it at all imo. Because first, it takes 8 hours and you can complete the quests faster than that. And two, you dont get any of the honing rewards from the quests

Oh, that's just saying they spawned, you can see when they spawn in the compass menu. If your boat looses all durability, you turn into a ghost ship.
