You do the thing for the entire stone. Then you can equip it and it gives you points for your engravings.
You need 5 points in an Engraving to get it to activate.
If you use 20 Engraving Books, you can then equip that on your character profile as seen in the screenshot. (You can equip the same one twice for a bonus of 6 points)

If you do, and you equip it, you get your engraving to Level 1, and its "Active".
