I wouldn't say it's overkill. I would go 50/50 until your swiftness hits 800ish, then you can look to push crit. But I wouldn't worry about that until you're at a point where you're looking to min/max your gear.

In my opininon it's worth doing side quests because they're always on the way of the main quests, they never have you go out of your way to complete them. And when you complete the main quest you'll have 2 power passes to get 2 other characters to level 50 as well, so you'll have 3x level50 characters to choose from. But you can absolutely skip sidequests if you want
