the only "grind" you will have early game is story for like 40 hours (and thats skipping every dialogue) and then forced waits of like 3 to 5 weeks doing dailies that take like 5 mins

Group tends to be harder, but you may have a hard time filling that raid. Its not gold earning for the vast majority of people, solo tends to be quicker/easier, and for the few people that wanna run it they may want to run it on hard for the achievement so they can get the extra pet.

You can powerpass. Skip the story and start at endgame. It throws a lot at you at once and can be overwhelming but you'll play relevant content right away.
You can play the story, it's long and sometimes boring but some people find it fun. It'll be easier to learn.
You can make 2 characters to do both if you want
If by shield you mean Gunlancer, it is very tanky and decent dps.
Paladin has a dps build but in group content it is typically a support character

It's not about it being worth or not, you could look for the cheapest way, but if you need a mat and there's no other ways of getting it....
You either slowly wait for the other known sources that could take several months due to bad luck or just get them from easy sources
