it really simple. relic is 15 willpower while ancient is 17 willpower. If you only cut 4 wp on 8 cost gems (so takes 4 willpower to equip). You need a total of 16 willpower to equip them which is more than relic

you can keep 8 and 9 green cost. you fuse 9 cost blues with other 9 cost blues in hopes it upgrades to purple, if it flips to a blue that can cut with silver, you can cut the silver one. and yeah for the last part. If you're also down bad you can try fusing greens together for a chance to upgrade to blue

And go look at the pity chests

You can hover over relic and ancient options to view them in game

Otherwise look online
