Well you want to get to level 70 sooner than later so its good to have if youre not there yet. You get other stuff too, cards, roster xp etc
There is no right of wrong for KT. Lots of people cant be assed to waste time on story. I personally like to Roster xp and rewards so I do them all manually

when you make new char, knowledge transfer to vern, upgrade ilvl to 805 or 905 not sure (you can also do tower to gain materials if you struggle with it), buy 1100ilvl gear in market or do chaps dungeon to get them, and then upgrade that gear to 1415
and you have to knowledge transfer again before doing chaos dungeons
