If the damage you take is red font, then that is physical damage, if the damage you take is purple font, then that is magical damage.
You can see this more clearly in T3 chaos dungeons or T3 cubes, where those range mobs shred you with magical damage, or the bosses in the fourth room with the magic damage

Since the servers merged a while ago, there is no super massive X community on a specific server anymore from what i understand, you can first of all try to get into a guild before playing so you know what server you gotta join,, however since most important stuff is region wide you can be in any server and play with others just fine. Try Rakit since it's one of the most populated/popular servers
