general honing mats, and tempering is, as explained yesterday, the initial big burst of shards to "unlock" the ability to hone on that piece
you know, how like, for regular honing, a piece will take that initial huge amount of shards, and then every time you want to attempt to hone it's like, 1/10th of that or something
