We're to get a big patch (Season 3 + Tier 4) in October that completely overhauls how engravings/gear works, so for the remainder of our time in Tier 3, they just gave us free engravings and gems. Everybody in T3 now permanently has free 5x3 + lvl 7 gems, you just need to get some high quality accessories for the raw stats.

If you're looking at providing immediate damage support for your party, yearning is the way. Destruction, you'd have to go through a 3 step process before the party can even be provided the damage support they need, if all the party was shielded before.

so your main will probably be stuck for a while on X content while your alt tries to catch up, using silver (maybe gold), leaps, stones etc
the real answer is you dont need alts, at all, ever, for your main to keep improving, and while it will be slow since its only 1 char making resources, it stops the fomo of needing to have alts close to main's ilv to generate enough resources for main
